As a 28 year veteran MATHCOUNTS coach I have seen many sets of great problems produced by many outstanding coaches over the years. I can tell you that I am truly excited by the Practice Competitions for MATHCOUNTS written by MATHCOUNTS coach Josh Frost. I have known Josh Frost for over 10 years and have found him to be one of the best coaches in the nation. My students like taking the "Frost Tests" as they call them. They know the problems will be interesting and challenging. I have seen,first hand,how Josh writes problems that have helped his students gain a deeper understanding into concepts and be better prepared for challenging problems on the same concepts. Very good

I think both undergraduates and graduates students in physics will find this text enjoyable and enlightening. The sections on general relativity and cosmology are, I think, a little less thorough and complicated than those in Wald or Shultz, though I've only briefly perused those other texts. (GR is still plenty abstract and mathematical in Rindler.) The end of chapter exercises are well-chosen and lead the reader to understand the material. Rindler does an excellent job of keep physical insight at the forefront of his discussions. He points out and resolves a number of interesting paradoxes, and he mentions a number of interesting modern experiments when relevant.

no explanation of tensors, co-variance, etc.

The author does a pretty good job of explaining physical concepts, but is obviously impatient at explaining mathematics. In the chapter on electromagnetism he introduces tensor notation and important theorems such as co- and contra-variance without explanation. In some cases he says "the proof is left to the reader." The treatment is much less detailed than Einstein's original 1915 paper. It is like a book that purports to teach you French, and which summarily presents an abstract French-English dictionary and then the rest of the book is written in French.

Professor Rindler explains the concepts with clarity and rigour while minimising the complexities of the notation and formulae. His ability to put ideas into words is outstanding. If you have heard the tales of trains that whoosh past in the ether, and are still none the wiser; or have wondered how the background radiation that set out on its way at the speed of light when the world was a smaller simpler place is only now reaching us, this book will enlighten you. Even for those whose maths cannot keep up it should be worthwhile, stimulating even, to read the sections at the beginning of each chapter, and those elsewhere light in formulae. For those willing to tackle the exercises he is perhaps a little too generous with the hints.

This "book" is nothing more than an ad for other books. It does not go into enough detail to create your own workouts. I was expecting much more. All of the information is available for free on the web. I would call it more of a pamphlet than a book. I have the Men's Health Power Training and Cardio Strength Training books by Coach Dos Remedios and they are much better.

Future Nostalgia

I gave "The Wild Shore," the first installment in Kim Robinson's "Three California's" Trilogy, three stars. But it is really more like a 3.5-star book, even almost a four. More on that below.

This is a "post-apocalypse" book. I've lately been indulging myself in a few of these. (See my recent reviews of "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy, "One Second After" by William R. Forstchen, or, a bit further back, "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel. Following this commentary will be reviews of "The Taking" by Dean Koontz, and "The Girl With All the Gifts" by M.R. Carey. "Doomsday" fans ought to read them all, even if you don't read my reviews. Anyway, back to "The Wild Shore.")

"The Wild Shore" is set on the southern California coast, between San Clemente and San Diego, on what would today be the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base. It is centered in a place called San Onofre, or the San Onofre Valley. There is no current town called San Onofre in the area. There is a San Onofre State Beach in the general vicinity, and perhaps geography to match the setting. The place is real, but there is no village there. Yet.

Sometimes, authors give their places or characters a symbolic name. "San Onofre" appears to refer to the Roman Catholic Saint Onuphrius, a Fourth of Fifth Century cleric. The name Onuphrius is, in turn, derived from an Egyptian word (Wnn-nfr), meaning "he who is continuingly good," and, in this sense may describe the protagonist in this story, young Henry Fletcher. He is a good sort of lad, and the book is his story, told in the first person.

Set in the year 2047, "The Wild Shore" is about some of those who survived, or were born after, a surprise nuclear attack which "murdered" the United States of America in the late 20th Century. The old Continental United States is now "quarantined" under the authority of the United Nations. Japanese naval ships patrol the West Coast, and Hawaii is a Japanese possession. The island of Santa Catalina, off the Orange County coast, is a Japanese naval base. "San Onofre" is a small agricultural and fishing community living on a subsistence economy. There are (maybe) between 50 and 100 people who live there. There are other communities in the region, as well as roving scavengers. These more widely-dispersed communities meet once or twice a year at "swap meets" where goods are bartered. Robinson makes these conclaves sound like a medieval fair. Little is told about the fate of the rest of the former United States.

The plot revolves around the revival of nationalism in San Diego, and attempts by some of the remaining outposts of American civilization to organize a "resistance" to "make America great again." (Apologies to current political hopefuls.) The themes center on the wisdom, costs, and collateral effects of these efforts, as the movement eventually comes to San Onofre.

For devotees of "Apocalypse" stories, "The Wild Shore" very much picks up where "Earth Abides," the 1949 post-apocalyptic novel by George R. Stewart (a classic in its own right) leaves off. Although the causes of the respective calamities differ (in "Earth Abides," it was a fast-acting and highly lethal disease), both focus on life AFTER the collapse of civilization. "The Wild Shore" has elements of political intrigue, conflict and competition among different characters, tragedy, and Human perseverance. But it also devotes a great many pages to describing the pastoral lifestyle of San Onofre, and how its residents have to work hard and cooperate to ensure they have enough to eat, stay warm in winter (which has grown more severe post-nuke), and care for one another. In these respects, themes Robinson is known for -- ecological sustainability, social justice, and the interplay between nature and culture -- figure prominently.

So, about those stars. I don't think this is a "five-star" book. "The Road," by Cormac McCarthy is my idea of a "five-star" read. Perhaps Robinson's "Mars Trilogy," (one Nebula, two Hugos) is a five-star read. (I'll let you all know.) But "The Wild Shore" is a little sedate to qualify as suspenseful, and there are no really new concepts suggested by Robinson in his post-nuke world. In that respect, the book is sort of "ho-hum." But it is, on the other hand, realistic, and his main characters mostly heartwarming. So, three stars, wishing I could give it 3.5 stars.

I enjoyed the book enough to read the next in this series, "The Gold Coast," (anybody got a spare copy?) This is despite my frequent lament that serial fiction rarely improves with successive installments. Maybe Robinson will be an exception.

The Right and Need to 'Matter'

The world of SF has been filled with apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic stories since its very beginning as a separately identifiable genre. Do we really need another one? In the case of this book, the answer to that is a resounding yes! Robinson has crafted a finely wrought work of character and theme that will resonate with readers, that is highly evocative of some of the other truly fine works within this sub-genre, from Pangborn's Davy to Stewart's Earth Abides, that delivers insights into societies and individual human motivations at a level rarely found in any fiction.
This book is part of Robinson's triptych (the other two pieces being The Gold Coast and Pacific Edge) that deals with various futures as seen from the perspective of Orange County, California. These books are related by theme only, and can all be read independently of the others. In this one the United States has effectively been destroyed by the use of about 3000 neutron bombs that were smuggled in by truck (the country of origin never provable but supposed to be Russia), turning almost every city into a waste land and wiping out the economic and industrial structure that allows today's Americans to enjoy a standard of living so very much higher than most of the rest of the world. The United States has now been placed in quarantine by the rest of the world, and any attempts to try to re-organize and re-build the country are ruthlessly disrupted. Orange County has returned to a fishing/agrarian level society with government by communal consensus. But this is the mere background to a remarkable tale of two young men, Henry and Steve, trying to find their own way and life answers within this community, underneath the strong influence of the town elder Tom, one of the last survivors who remembers what America was like before the bombs. Henry and Steve are close friends but are two very different personalities, and how each reacts to the opportunity to 'do something' to those who are maintaining the quarantine forms the main basis of the book.
The depth of characterization here is remarkable, and the portrayal of the society that grew under these imagined conditions is just as remarkable for its believability and economic viability. I found myself living and feeling right along with the main characters, could see myself in just the situations portrayed, facing the same moral dilemmas and wondering just how I would react, what I would do. The prose is smooth and with a nice balance between description, dialogue, and action, and a theme that is presented via 'show, not tell' methods.
All of the 'Three Californias' books are good, but this one is clearly the best, and should be put on everyone's 'must read' list.

Coming of age tale bogs down in implausible plotlines and dull characters

When I learned about the Three Californias trilogy, I was eager to read all three. Instead I barely made it through this first book. �The Wild Shore, a story about Southern Californians who have survived nuclear apocalypse, begins well enough. It paints a vivid picture of a village that survives by fishing and farming, and by steering clear of the menacing scavengers who roam the suburban ruins. But the tale deteriorates into half-baked confusion of ideas: a Japanese conspiracy, a corrupt and violent mayor determined to free America, and a collection of unconvincing characters taking different sides. The novel fails as a coming-of-age tale, founders on weak action and lame characters, and bores the reader for long stretches at a time. Even the action sequences are cruelly dull, partly because the reader cares so little about what happens to these people. Once excited to read all three parts of the trilogy, I put this dreary book down likely never to try another tale by Robinson.

Sniper at Leningrad's Seige

This is a very real account of a Red Army sniper's work in the heroic defense of his home city. It includes technical details of sniper deployment and tactics but also a look at the heroism and sorrow of a man trying to protect his family in a city beseiged for years by the Nazis in the Great Patriotic War. It has been said that "a good soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him but because he loves what is behind him." I'm a modest student of the Red Army snipers and a collector of Mosin sniper rifles, and this book, plus Zaitsev's "Notes of a Russian Sniper" are must-reads on the topic. Also, this is a very, very sad book, so don't expect any Rambo stuff...read this and you'll understand why Leningrad earned the title of "Hero City."

Thoroughly Engrossing Tale of the Siege of Leningrad

"Red Sniper on the Eastern Front" is one man's story of life in the front lines from 1941 until 1944, when he was badly wounded and invalided out of the Red Army. The book does not gloss over the horrors of trench warfare and the siege, nor does it dwell on them.

If you are looking for a detailed work describing the tradecraft of a Soviet sniper, this is not the book for you. If, however, you want an unflinching tale of war as experienced by a Soviet sniper, then this book is well worth reading.

(This book will also open the eyes of everyone who has been fed the propaganda that Soviet front-line commanders did not care for the welfare or the suffering of their men.)

A dour tale of war

This is Pilyushin's memoir of his part in World War 2 during the Siege of Leningrad. A monumental 800 day siege and brutal trench fighting, while the Soviet soldiers struggled to set their city free. Hardships of all kinds and intimate enemies often only a few dozen meters away.

Pilyushin's story too is one of interest og great personal tradegy and it is told in a somber manner. He is wounded several times and once very seriously while his wife and two sons suffer the hardships of the Siege of Leningrad, neaar starvation and constant shelling.

So everything is there to make a good story but I confess I didn't like the style in which it is written and it failed to capture me and became a labor to finish.

Which is sad for this is a worthy story, that fails in its telling. It reminds me of an old man telling a story that he hasn't practiced.

I have read a number of memoirs lately and found all these were a better read: GUNS AGAINST THE REICH: Memoirs of an Artillery Officer on the Eastern Front, Tank Rider: Into the Reich with the Red Army and On the Roads of War: A Soviet Cavalryman on the Eastern Front

About the Author
Michael Grant is a highly successful and renowned historian of the ancient world. He has held many academic posts including those of Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge; Professor of Humanity at Edinburgh University; Vice Chancellor of The Queen's University, Belfast and Vice Chancellor of the University of Khartoum. This book is an amazing achievement!

Michael Grant is a peerless writer on the ancient world. His earlier book on King Herod was superb. This comprehensive review of the history of Israel is the best thing of its kind I have ever seen. I am ordering a copy for myself even before finishing it. It will be a key reference book and essential background preparation for my own book in progress about early Christianity. Michael Grant knows how to write. And he covers all essential points in clear and insightful fashion.

Not a lot of detail.

This book is a "light" read.It covers a lot of histroical areas,but not in much detail.

The author uses the name "Yahweh".He gives some details on the books of the Old Testament mostly.

He writes about the "source theory" and some of the differences in beliefs such as when the name Yahweh was first known in OT times.

There are some interesting theories:

Zilpah and Bilhah were of "mixed race".

The tribe of Levi never went to Egypt at all.

The idea that boiling a kid in it's mother's milk was a Canaanite,magic fertility rite.

The possible split authorship of Isaiah,1-39 and 40-66.

He mentions a few times in passing the lost ten tribes of Israel and the history of Samaria as a capitol for King Omri.

This is a book suited to someone wanting a starter type book on Biblical history.

I would recommend "Restoring the Original Bible" by Ernest L. Martin to anyone wanting a more detailed study of Biblical history.

A History of Ancient Israel

This is an excellent resource on understanding the history of Israel following the text of the Hebrew Bible. Michael Grant is a superb writer, who conveys a solid knowledge of the Hebrew Bible, Jewish history, and commentary in a single accessible, and enjoyable text. A must read for teachers both academic and religious.

The second edition of this excellent work has been thoroughly revised and updated to take into account new research in the field of Old Testament studies. The book now also includes important new contributions from six leading biblical studies scholars: Leslie C. Allen, James R. Battenfield, John E. Hartley, Robert L. Hubbard Jr., John E. McKenna, and William B. Nelson Jr. Reflecting the best of evangelical scholarship, Old Testament Survey provides a comprehensive study of the nature and contents of each of the thirty-nine books of the Old Testament and also considers the historical data and theological themes relevant to the Hebrew Scriptures. Part 1 covers the five books of the Pentateuch. Part 2 studies the books of the Prophets, with special consideration given to the birth and history of Israel's monarchy, the role of prophets and prophecy, and the nature of Hebrew poetry. Part 3 examines the Writings, including a special study of wisdom literature in general. Frederic William Bush is Senior Professor of Ancient Near Eastern Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California.

Very informative book, but the authors ride the fence

I thought that this was a really interesting textbook. The authors reveal the message of each Old Testament book, while discussing some of the scholarly issues surrounding each part of the Old Testament (such as the JEDP theory). Unfortunately William Lasor passed away in 1991, so Hubbard (who is dead now too) and Bush recruited six other OT scholars to complete the revision. This may be one of the reasons why the authors ride the fence on issues such as whether or not we can take the numbers in Numbers literally, the number of Isaiah's, the historical worthiness of Joshua and Jonah, and the happenings surrounding the Exodus from Egypt. The authors also seem to lean toward the book of Jonah being a parable rather than actual history, although they don't take a really strong stand on that, either.

The reviewer who wrote that this book supports the JEDP theory was mistaken: In fact, the authors predict that this theory will eventually be out of vogue with scholarship. What the authors do affirm is that Moses was originally responsible for the Pentateuch and that through the centuries, the community revised and updated it.

And contrary to an earlier reviewer, I didn't find the book tedious at all: It was very well written and very interesting throughout. I especially appreciated the articles at the end about the Authority of the Old Testament for Christians, Messianic prophecy, and the chronological puzzle.

In short, I recommend this book, only wishing that the authors would take a stand on some of the issues discussed above.

Students! This is a lab book. The pages are designed to be removed and answers written on the appropriate blank lines before turning them in to the instructor for grading. Do NOT purchased this book "used", or even "rent" it because pages WILL be missing. Lab books should only be purchased new. That way, you will be sure that there are no missing pages.

As an instructor, I've settled on this lab book for my class. It is an excellent book.

Biomedical patents have been the subject of heated debate. Regulatory agencies such as the European Patent Office make small decisions with big implications, which escape scrutiny and revision, when they decide who has access to expensive diagnostic tests, whether human embryonic stem cells can be traded in markets, and under what circumstances human health is more important than animal welfare. Moreover, the administration of the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights by the World Trade Organization has raised considerable disquiet as it has arguably created grave health inequities. Those doubting the merits of the one size fits all approach ask whether priority should be given to serving the present needs of populations in dire need of medication or to promoting global innovation. The book looks in detail into the legal issues and ethical debates to ask the following three main questions: First, what are the ideas, goals, and broader ethical visions that underpin questions of governance and the legal reasoning employed by administrative agencies? Second, how can we democratize the decision making process of technocratic institutions such as the European Patent Office? Finally, how can we make the global intellectual property system more equitable? In answering these questions the book seeks to contribute to our understanding of the role and function of regulatory agencies in the regulation of the bioeconomy, explains the process of interpretation of legal norms, and proposes ways to rethink the reform of the patent system through the lens of legitimacy.

About the Author
Dr Katerina Sideri is currently lecturing at The Open University, Greece. During the writing of the book she was Associate Research Fellow at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, University of Oxford. Her research interests are in the areas of: Deliberative Governance; Bioethics; Intellectual Property Law and Policy, Biomedical and Biotechnology Patents, Behaviour and Functions of Administrative Agencies. She has published widely on these and related areas.
