Believe the title of this book...

...this is /the/ book for those who wish to enter all-grain (as opposed to extract or partial mash) brewing. The title specifically references lager beers, but the information, techniques and theory described apply to the production of ales as well. Don't buy this book first if you are just entering brewing as a hobby, but do buy it second or third if you move on to all-grain methods.

Excellent Reference

This book is required reading for any serious brewer. After reading it, you will know how to choose your ingredients, the correct process for your ingredients and the proper equipment to make high quality beers. There is a lot of good advice for setting up your brewery (at home or otherwise) and the general guidelines for getting the most out of your brews. Even though I have been an all-grain brewer for some time, I find that I still go back to Noonan's book for practical information rather frequently. The only downside to this book is that the theoretical sections can be rather confusing. I am an engineer by education and I had a difficult time of understanding the enzyme reactions that occur in a mash or way hop resins combine with ions in the wort. A good deal of this in-depth theory made this book read like a college text, instead of like a book for the hobbyist.
Still, once you can distinguish the practical aspects from the theoretical information, this book is a must-have.

Required reading for all-grain efforts, lager or ale.

Noonan's text is simply superb. It is well organized, extremely detailed, and concise. This is a book about how and why you use each part of the brewing process. Noonan champions and explains the decoction mash, and even explains how to figure out if the malt you're using needs a decoction or an infusion mash. Appendices address both the infusion mash and the step mash, concisely, yet in detail.
The first third of the book, dedicated to ingredients, is alone worth the price. The detail on malt, brewing water, and yeast instantly imparts a greater understanding of and appreciation for the brewing process.
Read this book and begin to make informed decisions about your ingredients and the processes you use to brew beer from them.

This is a pretty good generic Buddha thing. Nothing to write home about. A lot of the same old same old, but it's an old message and bears repeating. If you're new to Buddhism you'll like it.

It is a short beginner's book on Buddhism which helps one to understand the philosophy / religion of Buddhism much better than diving into the huge selections of sutras. The author, Brian Ruhe, will give you a good starting point to continue the study of Buddhism.

When Rafe and the Devil Riders rescue me from the unwanted advances of a dirtbag trucker at my night job, I somehow find myself instead working for them, in their bar - the Devil's Hideout. They're rough men, tempered by a life lived on the outside - but they're loyal, fiercely protective of their own, and they soon take me under their wing.

But just as I start to feel like I belong, that I've found my new family, my past comes hurtling back, forcing me to run once more.

My burgeoning relationship with Rafe is the hardest to leave behind, but I have no choice. I'll soon learn, though, that Rafe isn't so easy to shake off...

The first time I saw her, being pawed at by that asshole trucker, I knew she was different. Flaming red hair with a temperament to match, and drop-dead gorgeous. I can see in her eyes, though, the walls she's built up around herself.

I'm hardly one to talk, of course. We've all got our issues, things that we'd prefer to leave in our past - and I'm no different. Two tours in Afghanistan were enough to build pretty thick walls of my own.

These days, though, I somehow find myself the leader of the Devil Riders. They're my new family, and a rougher, cruder, more loyal bunch of sons of bitches you could never hope to find.

Me and Chrissy are taking things one day at a time, and I can start to feel those old walls of mine crumbling...but then she just up and disappears one day. Seems that her past finally caught up to her.

Like my Dad always said though, you can't run from your problems forever. And I'm not about to let her get away that easily...

This novella was a great story about change in lifestyle after the MC. Rafe was a retired Marine and wanted more out of life. Saving Chrissy from the truck stop incident opened his eyes to what he wanted. Giving her a job at his bar and keeping her close was probably not the right choice but he couldn't help himself. Chrissy was running from an abusive ex and psycho student who thought she owed him because he had money. Together, Rafe and Chrissy saved each other and got their happily ever after!!!! Loved the story line.

Fantastic Read and Two for One!

Devil Riders MC book 1 was great but I think I enjoyed the bonus read of Tess and Eli even more. Both are filled with Lust, love, motorcycles, blackmail, crime, chase, intrigue, what more could you ask for. You won't be able to put either story down. This is my first book by Ashley Rhodes but it will not be my last.

She is attracted to the leader of the bikers, Rafe.

Rafe is the leader of the Devil Riders. He owns and runs the Devils Hideout bar. Rafe feels drawn to Chrissy. He knows that he needs to save her and give her a job. Rafe and his buddy were in the military and now band together to do odd jobs. They have formed their own family and take care of each other. The bikers come to Chrissy's rescue a few more times. Rafe is getting tired of the life and wants to move on to something else.

Chrissy and Rafe both a tough exterior. Neither one want to show their vulnerable side. Chrissy feels comfortable and safe with the bikers. After Justin (the student she has been tutoring and turned down) threaten Chrissy, she goes on the run again. Rafe wants to find her, but has to finish the job first. Coincidence or Fate brings Chrissy and Rafe together again. Chrissy didn't like fate, because of her past and not being able to escape it. Rafe and Chrissy are two people who yearn for freedom and each other. I like how they made each other better and could be themselves when they were together.

The characters sexual chemistry is very hot. I loved this book and these characters. I hope that there will be books on some of the other members of the Devil Riders. * I received this ARC book in exchange for an unbiased review.

Good but requires a lot of study

I can recommend this book if you want to understand the "Market Profile" concept, which is a special way of charting price movement. The book is well written and contains a lot of information which takes some time to digest.

The key weakness with the book is that the reader has to do a lot of work in addition to create a useful approach out of the information provided. The authors keep noting that the Market Profile cannot be used for forecasting. With this they seem to mean longer term forecasting.

This is a much better book that the 2007 book by the same authors.

Update 2013: I have concluded that the material is not worth my time. Still it might suit some people. I have downgraded the book from 4 to 3 stars; for specialists only.

A good alternative filter for the markets.

The title of this book can be a bit misleading. The subject matter has little to do with the mental side of trading. Rather, it's a quite thorough discussion of the Market Profile technique for market analysis and trading. Market Profile is essentially an alternative charting method which has been used by professionals in the futures market for years, but has yet to gain wider acclaim in the broader arena because it is not a feature readily available on retail charting packages. For those who take the time to learn it, however, Market Profile can be a very valuable resource.

Mind Over Markets takes the reader through the full topic of Market Profile, from basic to advanced. It discusses the underlying logic behind the methodology and how to apply it. The authors use numerous examples to discuss the various patterns and set-ups which occur, and how one can trade them for maximum benefit.

That said, one seeking a fully developed trading system will not find it here. The authors encourage the reader to spend time working with the Market Profile to get a feel for it for application in their own trading. They do not give many hard and fast rules. This can be annoying for one seeking a straight-forward system, but the fact of the matter is the market is variable. What works one time may not work other times, at least not in the same way.

The bottom line is that Market Profile is a tool. It is a way to look at the markets differently than one normally does, which can be a good thing, and Mind Over Markets is an excellent resource along those lines. Is it for everyone? Probably not, but even if you don't end up using Market Profile, there is still some value to be had in reading Mind Over Markets and understanding the overall message of market action and movement.

a way to frame the markets

I think the reason that at least one reviewer mentioned this book and the phrase "holy grail" is that this books contains an exhaustive exposition of the types or forms of days that the market can have with respect to different time periods. Trading strategies and technical analysis, which are really the only tools that readers can cull from popular trading books, don't really provide a frame, or thorough way to look at the market. Market Profile on the other hand thoroughly explains the auction process in terms of buyer and sellers without recourse to some filter--it's market generated information, not imposed rules. In this sense, it's invaluable. The trading rules thereby procede from what the market tells you. Of course, the market can still fool you but what the book teaches you is how to listen to the market and interpret in its simplest, particulate forms.

My review is at a very abstract level, but the book provides, with maybe too many examples, the types of days that a market can have and their implications and indications. For example, the authors would say that if the trading in the first half hour is within a limited range, then it has a high chance of trading outside that range; if it goes out of that range to the downside, then we have a strong seller presence. If buyers don't step up to buy in this new range, then we would anticipate that sellers are in control of the market, at which point we should place a short position. Now, the market can continue its trend, establish a new range, or buyers can step in to create what is called a buying tail, which is a sign that buyers find value at the new lows. This is a bit complicated, but once you read the book and understand the possible market movements, then it all becomes almost algorithmic and intuitive at the same time. A better title might be "market sense," in the same way that common sense tells us how to frame everyday human situations.

Laughter, knowledge and disbelief all in one go - love it!

I was given this book as an early birthday present from a friend last week and I literally haven't put it down! James Egan is a great author, I loved the last book I read '365 Ways to Stop Sabotaging Your Life' and this book is just as enjoyable. You'd never believe there were so many things in life that you could swear were true but are complete nonsense! Such a fun book - amusing, content rich and very informative. 5 stars :)

Great short romance

I really liked this book. When I am in the mood for a shorter story i always go to Presents. This one was a very similar story of poor girl meets prince, but the writing made it very original and very good. The characters where developed well and you could understand their actions and reactions to each situation. Very good developement for a shorter story. Got me laughing and crying but enjoyed the full story. Would read from this reader again.

Holly is a waitress who ends up serving herself to Prince Casper. He thinks she's a gold digger out for publicity and money. Holly becomes pregnant after that one encounter and despite not believing he is the father, Casper marries her. They have hot sexual chemistry, but Casper says he doesn't do love. Holly is a really sweet person who quickly wins over the staff and people of her new country. Will she win over Casper?

I really liked this book. It is sexy, romantic, and fun. I really liked Holly. She's very spunky and doesn't back down from what she wants or thinks. Casper is a royal and has been hurt in the past, but still strives to make Holly happy, despite his misgivings.

I would have liked another chapter or epilogue to tell us how things were when the baby came. I docked one star for this. Other than that, I really enjoyed this book and recommend it!

This book was an entertaining read that occassionally made me smile. The heroine is feisty without being a b#$%*^, and the hero is the typical billionare Italian prince. Holly is likeable because is just too nice to hate, but she stayed with the hero even when she should have shoved her boots heels in his soft tissues and made a break for a life without the perpetual downer (aka Casper).

Casper is a hypersexual Italian male with a libido to rival the entire UK rugby team.

SPOILER: At the beginning of the book, during the first stages of his rather easy seduction of Holly, he asks her if she is using protection. Now, one would assume that since she doesn't have external genitalia, that he is referring to protection from pregnancy. Later on in the book we discover that Casper BELIEVES he is infertile - sterile - shooting blanks...so WHY does he ask Holly is she is using protection?! That's like handing a blind man a blind fold.

Now that I have raised this question, I will summarize my opinion of this book:

It is a quick, fun read, but don't be surprised that when someone asks you if you liked it, all you can do is shrug and say, "Meh".

Great book.

But unless you begin to think more clearly and surrender some of your Irrational Beliefs, you will tend to depress yourself again when you stop the drugs and exercises. To effect permanent and deep-seated improvements, philosophic changes seem to be best.

Again, we often encourage our clients to use medication, relaxation techniques, movement therapy, yoga exercises, or other physical approaches. We believe that these techniques may help. And we teach, as we shall show later, many emotive, dramatic, fantasy, self-management, and behavior modification methods. More than most other schools of therapy, REBT [Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy] employs a comprehensive, integrative approach to treatment.

We still hold, however, that if you would most thoroughly and permanently change your disturbed feelings, you’d better use considerable reasoning. Because a large element (though not the whole) of destructive emotion stems from unrealistic, illogical, and self-sabotaging thinking.”

Well, that’s officially the longest intro quote I think we’ve had in these Notes and this is #114. But it captures the essence of A Guide to Rational Living quite well so we’ll stick with it. :)

Albert Ellis, the co-author of this straight-talking book all about getting our thoughts in order so we can live happier, more fulfilled lives, was one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century. In fact, he’s been ranked as the #2 top psychologist ever—right behind Carl Rogers (see Notes on On Becoming a Person) and ahead of Sigmund Freud.

He’s essentially the founder of the modern cognitive behavioral therapy movement that’s been scientifically proven to be one of the most powerful ways to help people get out of a funk and this book is a no-nonsense, kinda old-school guide to rockin’ it.

Let’s explore some of my favorite Big Ideas:

1. The Roots of Neurosis - Distorted thinking.
2. The ABC’s of Suffering - Action -> Belief -> Consequences.
3. A Frantic Search - For perfection is not a good idea.
4. Negative Emotions - Healthy vs. unhealthy.
5. Think AND Act - Pretty, please.

As you get your mind right and practice the ABC’s of life, how can you show up more and more fully and give your greatest gifts in greatest service to your family, your community and your world?!

Half-baked, self-aggrandizing crap

Book summary:
"I think irrational thoughts."
"Stop thinking those irrational thoughts and replace them with something else."

Done.
This books takes the approach that thoughts rule all.
That is not the case.
Sometimes our bodies manufacture chemicals that lead to certain types of thoughts.
It's a two-way street. And to only focus on one way is folly.

It might be an interesting introduction to CBT, but doesn't explain how real CBT works.
And CBT can only do so much.
The authors' authoritative tone bothers me throughout the book.

This is an entertaining book in some respects, but don't expect it to offer any real help.
Go see a professional.

The absolute best Self-Help book ever.

Of all the Self-Help books (and systems of therapy) out there, Albert Ellis has developed the best one - Cognitive Behavior Therapy/ Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. This book is even better than, The Road Less Traveled, 25th Anniversary Edition : A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth, in my opinion. Take this passage from page 99: "Adults often act in an immature, childish manner. One of the essences of their humanity is fallibility. Consequently, they find it exceptionally easy to do sloppy, wishfulfilling thinking. And thereby often get what they don't want. But the fact that you may easily behave childishly doesn't mean that you must. You can teach yourself to practice mature, reflective thinking. If you do, you will hardly be completely level headed or happy. But you can train yourself to rarely feel desperately miserable or depressed. If, again, you work at it."
This is a great book and I highly recommend it.
