Good, easy reader for Chinese learners
By A. Kravitz
This reader ("Josh Duyiwuer") helps fill a gap in the materials currently available to Chinese learners. Textbooks are pretty boring, while real books are too hard until reaching a very high level. There are very few in-between materials, and this is especially true when it comes to traditional characters (and again even more true when it comes to ebooks).

Josh Duyiwuer is written in traditional characters, simplified characters, and pinyin, each separated into its own section. The story itself is decent, simple and repetitious by design, telling the story of a 9th grader's trials and tribulations. It's really a "young adult" story, but it was entertaining enough to keep this old adult reading.

According to the notes, the reader contains 417 unique characters, which probably means it's best suited for high-beginner/low-intermediate Chinese learners. It could also be useful for higher level students who want to refresh their knowledge or increase their reading speed.

There are no explanations of the grammar, but the grammar used is simple enough that there shouldn't be a problem for students at the suggested level. As for the vocabulary, I actually didn't realize there was a glossary when I first read this because the glossary is all the way at the end of the book and I only read the traditional characters section which comes up front. For me it wasn't an issue as the occasional new word was easy enough to figure out from context, but if a large portion of the vocab is unfamiliar, I'd wait to read this book as as it's not convenient to check the glossary while reading.

Overall I recommend this book as a way to strengthen vocabulary, improve reading speed, and just get the feeling of what it's like to read Chinese for pleasure.

Very good reader for learning Chinese
By Amazon Customer
Pros
Has both traditional and simplified character versions
Glossary has both pinyin and characters
Glossary definitions is specifically tailored to usage in the story
Lots of repetition of basic patterns and vocab

Cons
No access to audio version
A few typos
Kindle dictionary won't translate traditional characters

This Chinese reader has pinyin, simplified and traditional character versions all in one book. On Kindle, its one of the few that has traditional characters and the only one I found so far that has all three. Thankfully each version is in its own section so you can truly get immersed in each one without the other interfering. Chinese readers that have the pinyin written directly above or below the characters become quite a distraction for many of us so you won't have that problem here.

The book is generally well written except for a few typos, which really wasn't a big deal especially as the author stated in the beginning this was a new book and was likely to have a few mistakes.

At times the story was pretty good and was easy to get immersed inside the story line and issues confronting the characters. At other times, it was pretty obvious I was reading a book written by a Chinese teacher and not a professional writer as the story wasn't as well developed as some other readers and contained a few thinly disguised attacks on a competing Chinese learning product (i.e., Rosetta Stone). At which time, it felt more like I was reading a rant on a forum than a well thought out story consistent with other readers. However, this didn't negatively affect the learning process at all.

A bit unusual compared to other books is that the story is told entirely from the perspective of one person who is mostly talking to himself without third person narration. This made the dialogue much more conversational compared to traditional stories in readers from Chinese Breeze and Mandarin Companion.

My only real complaint, which so far is true for all Kindle Chinese readers, is that there is no link to download audio so one can practice their listening skills as well as reading. The Kindle dictionary also won't translate traditional characters - simplified only. This obviously is a problem with the Kindle app and not the author but it does slow down the learning process when one comes upon an unknown character.

All in all though, an excellent reader and a must for any Chinese student with an interest in learning traditional characters.
