About the Author
Safa Kasap is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and has been making distinct and outstanding research contributions to electronic and photonic materials and devices, and their applications in optical communications and x-ray imaging, for over twenty years. Harry Ruda is Director of the Centre for Advanced Nanotechnology, and Chair Professor in Nanotechnology at the University of Toronto, Canada. His research interests focus on the fabrication and modeling of quantum functional nanostructures with applications in the fields of nanoelectronics and nanophotonics. Yann Boucher is a Researcher at the Laboratoire RESO, ENIB (Brest National Engineering School), France. He has developed original tools for modeling optoelectronic devices, such as Extended Transfer Matrix Formalism including sources, or so-called Couplonics, a method based on exact coupled-wave equations for investigating periodic structures.

It's Not the Garrido Book but Much More about Systematic Failure!

Phil and Nancy Garrido are in prison probably for the rest of their lives. In 2009, Jaycee Dugard was found alive with her two daughters, the product of rape by Phil Garrido, living in a backyard compound in Antioch, California. If Jaycee hadn't finally revealed her real name, she and her girls would still be there living under the radar. Instead, two women at University of California at the Berkeley campus made attempts to search for the truth.

This book is not just about Jaycee's kidnapping. Her book is her story and hers alone. I have read that book as well. This book is written by a true crime veteran writer who has other books to his credit. Unlike Jaycee's book, this book goes into detail regarding Garrido's life into more detail for those who need to know about the case overall.

This book also goes into the Phil's abduction and rape of Katie Callaway in the 1970s for which he served only 11 years of a 50 year sentence. His release into the parole and probation system is complicated by the rules, jurisdictions, and his own manipulation of the system itself.

This author examines why Jaycee was kidnapped in the first place when Garrido was released years before his expected due date unbeknownst to his first victim, Katie Callaway. The author explains in detail about the case and the trial. Sadly justice was not served then and there. If Garrido had remained in Leavenworth, he would have never been able to kidnap Dugard in the first place.

The author reminds us of the several warning signs that went unnoticed by parole and probation officers and neighbors as well. The author also has given attention to false tabloid reports about the case. Robert Scott does a good service in explaining how this all could have happened to Dugard. While this book doesn't detail the abuse that she suffered at the hands of her captors, the book shows how the system had also failed Dugard and her family.

For 18 years, there was speculation about her stepfather Carl Probyn's actions on that June morning and his involvement in a crime against her. He was finally exonerated 18 years later as a murder and kidnapping suspect in his own stepdaughter's case. While their family wasn't whole, there was plenty of collateral damage suffered all over the place in the community as well.

This book shows how the system failed Dugard and Callaway as two victims of Garrido's crimes. The author tries to understand Phil Garrido without being sympathetic. The author sees Garrido for the criminal that he is. He also tries to understand Phil's wife, Nancy, who largely went unnoticed even in her neighborhood or in life. Phil and Nancy avoided a trial by pleading guilty rather than putting Jaycee and her daughters on the stand to testify against them. If they had, they would be traumatized all over again.

The author respects Dugard and Callaway enough to keep the book focused more on the failed system in California. By reading this book and Dugard's book, you will come to understand what had happened from different points of view. I read both and am more educated than ever in this case. If you wanted to know about Garrido's crimes and background, this book is for you. If you want to know more about Jaycee's abduction and life, you read her book too.

Boring Second-hand Info

It's as if the author compiled as many newspaper and magazine clippings as he could, and then made a book out of them. I was interested in learning about Jaycee and her ordeal, and how it could possibly have continued for 18 years with no one knowing, not warmed-over facts and figures about the cretin that kidnapped her. Only in the last few pages was it compelling, and that's because the interview was in Jaycee's own words (and the interview was not even with the author).

This book has very little to do with Jaycee Lee Dugard. It is really the story of Phillip Craig Garrido's life. It is a shame that the author didn't title this correctly and that he actually put a photo of Jaycee on the cover of his book, shame on you.

About the Author
Brian Masters has written over twenty books on subjects as diverse as French literature, the dukedoms in Great Britain, E.F. Benson and Marie Corelli. He is best known for his true crime books, including biographies of Jeffrey Dahmer and Rosemary and Fred West. His groundbreaking study of mass murderer Dennis Nilsen in Killing for Company, won the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger for Non-Fiction in 1985. He is also highly regarded for his journalism.

Fascinating and horrifying

This book is a fascinating look at Dennis Nilson, a British man convicted of killing more than a dozen men and of attempting to kill many more. He strangled them and hid them under his floorboards until he dismembered and destroyed their bodies by fire or by flushing them down the toilet. The latter method was his final undoing as a problem in the sewage system alerted the police. The author attempts to understand WHY people like Nilson kill - he traces his childhood and adulthood in an attempt to understand his motivations. This book is hard reading at times, pretty academic, with lots of detailed psychological analysis, but it is a fascinating read, and I highly recommend it to true crime fans who want to go beyond just the story of the crimes, to the deep psychology of serial killers.

Some parts that dragged on could've been cut out without effecting overall story. However, it was apparent that author did immense research and was enthusiastic about the subject he was writing about. I mostly liked the efforts made by the author to delve into the "why"of the crimes, a lot of interesting psychological speculation was included, and a lot of words from the perpetrators mouth that gave me a feeling of closure, almost as if at least SOME explanation of these bizzare crimes was offered up. No one will ever really understand but the fascination of true crime comes from the mystery of why and I like when even a little insight can be offered.

This is a thorough and well-written book about Dennis Nilsen, a serial killer who prayed on unfortunate homosexual men from late 1970s to early 1980s.
While the book is written in an autobiographical format, it is an entire account of Nilsen's upbringing and contains actual excerpts from Nilsen's own writings, including some disturbing drawings that Nilsen made depicting his victims after death.
I appreciate the informative and direct approach Brian Masters took to try to help the reader understand the fundamental question of, "why?"
Anyone who reads true crime will appreciate this book!
