Excelent introductry book, will explained, intersting topics

I have read most of the book and implemented most of the propsed algorithms. It was easy to understend. The authors simplified much of the notations that is used by the oirignal writers of the algorithms. It opens the area for any one intersted in those topics to continue research with an open mind about what to choose and how.

Surprisingly still quite fresh 9 years on

Since this book was published in 1997, a lot has happend in the area of physical design automation--but this is still a remarkably good text, especially for students and beginners. This because not only is it exceedingly clearly written, it concentraits on classic techniques which form the foundation for techniques still used today.

What is urgently needed is a bang-up-to-date text on this subject which contains materials for the more advanced user--not just for students, but also for old salts like myself who have been working in the trenches for 10 years! If such a text were to be written by these authors, I'm sure it would be a classic.

Sadly, EDA industry is a very small and shrinking industry, and a book like this is HARD to write, because you have to be an expert in so many fields. So this book is probably as good as we can reasonably expect to see anytime soon.

I found that the pseudocode in this book was well explained with the algorithms. I did find the book to be quite dry overall; just an acceptable textbook.
Note: This book is super difficult to keep open, especially since its to small.

Value for price

One thing about the PMP exam...it seems like around every corner there is someone trying to capitalize on the certification process. Exorbitantly priced books are the norm in this category, but not this one. Admittedly, I bought this because after spending $500 on the exam registration, I didn't want to drop another $80 on Rita Mulcahy's book or an online exam simulator. For $13, how could I go wrong?

The questions are arranged by PMBOK knowledge area, which is a nice way to test and solidify your understanding after a chapter or section. They range from extremely easy (i.e. choose the correct definition) to some more challenging questions towards the end of each section. I did take exception to a few of the answers provided, but that has always been the case with PMP questions since they are generally "gray area" or more correct/less correct answers. All in all, for $13, this is a good primer and if you feel you need more sample questions, there are plenty of free practice sites out there (OliverLehmann is a good one) that can really test you with extreme difficulty.

FYI - I did get a chance to glance at a copy of Rita's book and noticed that MANY of the questions in this book are very similar or nearly identical to Rita's. That should be a little vote of confidence for this book as Rita is well regarded in the industry. Most importantly, I guess, is that I passed the exam.

Helpful, but could use some work.

l just passed my exam, and will give some credit to this book. The vast majority of the credit goes to Rita's guide, which also includes about 400 practice questions. I did find it very helpful to practice loads of questions just before taking the exam, and this concentrated book of consistent questions gave me a different perspective. I tried a number of the online sites, but found them inconsistent, and rarely explained why answers were correct or incorrect.

All of that said, this book could use a major re-write. The editing was non-existent. There are typos, misspellings and poorly formed sentences all over the place, and it seems to have gotten worse as it went on. Either the editor quit halfway through, the publishing deadline caught the author halfway through self-review or maybe I just became more sensitive to it as time went on. The second main issue is that the answers were often lacking explanations for why something was incorrect, or would just reaffirm that an answer was correct because, well, it was correct. Finally, I felt like there was way more focus on ITTO than what I experienced with my random exam questions. That may or may not be represantitive, but I will admit it freaked me out in my final days of study.

All of that said, I still give this 4 stars because of the price, the general quality of the questions, and that I almost always agreed with the answers. That last one sounds odd, but I have run into online sources and a study guide (not Rita's) that had a number of questions that I could in no way support the answers to.

Insightful chess & biography

I buy a lot of chess books, but my favorites are always the auto-biographies. The book is around 250 pages, half devoted to the 41 annotated games, the other half (120 pages!) of pure biography.

The games section is organized by type of game: some favorites, a few against World Champions, a few where Tal-like sacrifices lead to tactical attacks, some opening innovations, and some endgames.

Being a 1.d4 player, I was familiar with Tukmakov's contributions to opening theory, especially in the QGD. I was pleased to find in this book, however, that he was a Catalan specialist as well (he reports a never-lost record of 9-1-0, the draw is in the book where he had an obvious winning position and just went to sleep.. so call it 10-0-0 with the Catalan).

In all games, I was impressed with Tukmakov's style of play. Seemingly simple moves to prepare a single square (outpost) turn into somewhat mechanical wins, once the tactics are calc'd correctly, of course! But then, many opening lines blown apart with piece sacrifices, forcing the opponent on long routes to hold on. A perfect blend of positional and tactical play! And analysis never too lengthy as he gives the moves to reach his evaluation, and let's you figure the rest out (good for your own study!).

On the down side, there were quite a few misprints (typos, or originating with the author?) of moves, making one wonder how much was entered or checked by computer. Always annoying.

The biographical section is just as interesting as his games. A life growing up in Soviet times, with the broken families it caused, combined with the psychological problems he experienced were told from a varying first-person, third-person reference. This is a bit confusing, but the third-person paragraphs were often told as stories, as if written as a novel. So the technique of changing views keeps the pure biographical first-person separate from the longing/personal third-person voice.

Overall, this book is pure chess entertainment, but weighs heavily with the useful... both in history and chess.
The biographical section gives insight into the Soviet world outside of chess, as well as pictures of the lives of the major Soviet chessplayers-- even non-chessplayers will enjoy this half. The games section will surely improve the player who devotes some time to their study.

Tukamakov gives a deeply personal and heart-felt examination of his career; His annotations are enlightening how a grandmaster prepared before the event of computer engines and databases. This is a book that will appeal to many different kinds of chess players, but especially for anyone who loves the game as a 'profession', and wants to use it as a guide to improve.

A masterpiece

Occasionally a master writes a masterpiece. Hunt has taken a lifetime of study and given the world a book to cherish. Having taught landscape architecture history for many years, this book satisfies my great need to understand how the events and people who designed gardens and landscapes worth remembering are still important to current issues of design. Types of places are presented with clear, jargon-free language and precisely chosen images that lead the reader through the history of primarily Western places, although the chapters on Chinese and Japanese gardens inform the Western reader well. The bibliographic footnotes are of particular importance. Here key volumes and their relevance form a list of authors who have contributed to the field's scholarship - books all landscape architecture and architecture history professors should know well, and students should dedicate themselves to reading from start to finish. This is also a book written for the 21st century reader where basic information easily available online is passed over for the rich perspectives Hunt brings to a full range of topics. I highly recommend this book to the student and professional interested in history and in understanding why we look to history at all.

Cool gardens but text a bit specialized.

This is largely a consideration of garden design, essentially landscape architecture. It examines mostly British, French and Italian designs, but does have chapters on Japanese gardens, some sacred sites (not just religious) and others. I think the most interesting chapter is on Islamic and Mughal (that it, the Muslim dynasty long ruling India) is the most interesting portion of the book.

The illustrations are excellent. The text is a bit academic in style, tilting to the views, vocabulary and concepts of landscape designers. It is a pleasant read and will deepen a reader's sense of garden variety.

Entertaining, but not always correct

It rarely happens that I’m really looking forward to a release of a book. The announcement of “ABAP to the future” by Paul Hardy was such an occasion. Reading the TOC, I was 100% positive that Paul picked the right topics which were needed in order to fulfil the promises of the title. I was particularly excited about the BOPF chapter, since I'm very fond of the framework. Until now there has not been literature out there describing it.

The writing style is very entertaining, light-hearted and uses "funny" to "bizarre" examples. I liked it a lot (I don't need another dull-to-read-facts-driven-bookshelf-beautifier). However, if you're not willing to abstract technology which might be used for sales-order-processing to a monster-factory, you might be disappointed. I highly recommend to look-inside prior to the purchase to check on the compatibility to the style.

While accepting a technical book to be entertaining, it still has to be correct. And this is why I can only partially recommend this book: there are too many statements and explanations which are just not true - particularly in the BOPF chapter. This chapter was so misleading I even wrote a long series of blogs on the SAP Community Network trying to clarify them (you can find them easily searching on SCN for the book's title).

My verdict: If you want to get an overview of hyped and useful technologies on the SAP platform and like light literature, grab it.
If you're looking for a serious introduction and want to understand the basic underlying principles, you at least have to buy an additional book.

It makes you want to be a better programmer

This book reminds me of a scene in the great movie As Good As It Gets were Helen Hunt’s character asks Jack Nicholson’s character (who suffers from OCD) to make a quick compliment after he just hurt her feelings. And, surprisingly, Jack Nicholson’s compliment is that after their relationship developed he started taking an OCD medicine. This does not seem at first as a compliment to Helen’s character and she almost gets up to leave. But then Jack Nicholson quietly adds: “You make me want to be a better man”. And this book makes you want to be a better programmer.

I feel the way it is written and presents information is a very welcome departure from the SAP literature of yesteryears. And I can only hope that more authors will come forward with similar styles.

If you are looking just for the reference materials, there is ABAP keyword documentation available online free of charge. (Compared to the previous version that might as well have been written in German, the 7.4 documentation has been improved quite a bit and is surprisingly very helpful.) Code samples can be found in many SAP demo programs. One does not really need a book these days just to have information. But this book is much more than a collection of ABAP code samples. It's truly an inspiration (I hate this word, but it really is in this case) for the ABAPers, especially those who might have been stuck just repeating what they have been doing for the past 10-20 years (much like I feel sometimes).

Paul’s book is a “sequel” to Next Generation ABAP Development. Even though I admire Thomas Jung and Rich Heilman and believe they are the greatest SAP educators of our times, Paul’s writing felt more comfortable than observing imaginary programmer Russel in his natural habitat. Paul writes from the first person and his book reads more like a conversation with a friend. Unlike Thomas and Rich, Paul does not work for SAP (sic!). Other SAP customers should really appreciate his insights in this book (and on SCN).

To address the concern expressed by another reviewer – yes, there are "monsters" in this book instead of our beloved orders, invoices and accounting documents. But being capable of looking at one object and seeing how it can relate to another project is an essential skill for any programmer. Also keep in mind these books are written using the IDES systems where limited business data is available.

We don’t use 7.4 yet where I work, but even after reading just a couple of chapters it made me re-think what I am doing today and search for the opportunities to improve. If you want to become a better ABAPer – get this book.
