About the Author
Bruce L. Bowerman is a professor of decision sciences at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He received his Ph.D. in statistics from Iowa State University in 1974 and has over 32 years of experience teaching basic statistics, regression analysis, time series forecasting, and design of experiments to both undergraduate and graduate students. In 1987 Professor Bowerman received an Outstanding Teaching award from the Miami University senior class, and in 1992 he received the Effective Educator award from the Richard T. Farmer School of Business Administration. Together with Richard T. O�Connell, Professor Bowerman has written ten textbooks. In addition to the earlier editions of this forecasting textbook, these textbooks include BUSINESS STATISTICS IN PRACTICE and LINEAR STATISTICAL MODELS: AN APPLIED APPROACH. The first edition of FORTECASTING AND TIME SERIES earned an Outstanding Academic Book award from CHOICE magazine. Professor Bowerman has also published a number of articles in applied stochastic processes, time series forecasting, and statistical education.

intermediate level time series book

I reviewed the third edition of this book for the American Statistician in 1994. The book covers most of the important topics for an applied course and has a reasonable list of references. There are many examples and homework exercises. Statistical software packages such as SAS and MINITAB are used throughout in example problems. The early chapters cover the basics of statistical inference and regression (Chapters 2-5). This material can be skipped in a first time series course if introductory statistics is a prerequisite.

The latter chapters cover time series regression, seasonal decomposition methods, exponential smoothing and Box-Jenkins methods. But this book does not include nonlinear time series models and it overlooks the recent and popular state space approach to time series modeling. Multivariate time series methods are also left out, though perhaps they are more appropriate for an advanced or second course in time series analysis.

The cookbook nature of the text can be found in the guidelines given for Box-Jenkins model identification. The statistical theory that the methods rely on is avoided. Although a number of important probability distributions are used with their relevant statistical tables, the underlying assumptions and distributional theory is completely avoided.

Important concepts such as the central limit theorem and the concept of a stationary stochastic process are given only very brief treatment. Other concepts are oversimplified to avoid the need for the development of any distribution theory.

This book will serve well for a course in which the student is interested in how to implement exponential smoothing and the general class of Box-Jenkins models through the use of standard statistical packages. However if the instructor wants depth of understanding the text is not adequate. Frequecy domain methods often useful in engineering applications are not even discussed.

While the book covers forecasting applications, it does not consider applications to decomposition of variance or discriminant analysis. Time series methods are also applicable in these contexts. Abraham and Ledolter (1984) "Statistical Methods for Forecasting" cover the same topics but in much greater depth. Also Janacek and Swift (1993) "Time Series: Forecasting, Simulation, Applications" is slightly more advanced and provides broader coverage. Anyone interested in the theory can consult a number of good books including the latest edition of Brockwell and Davis "Time Series: Theory and Methods". Shumway and Stoffer (2000) "Time Series Analysis and Its Applications" is up-to-date, comprehensive and has many good engineering applications.

This book covers step by step methodology and theory for the basic time series concepts. It has worked out examples with even the most rudimentary calculations demonstrated for complex subjects like ARMA and Box-Cox decomposition. It is a good book for basic practitioners and those with a basic interest in time series analysis

Outstanding text on time series forecasting

This is a very well written textbook on time series forecasting. This 725 page textbook provides thorough coverage of time series methods from elementary statistics to Box-Jenkins models and transfer functions and intervention models. It is easy to read and includes many tables of actual data which are analyzed. Highly recommended.

"Throughout Ernest Hemingway's career as a writer," says Larry W. Phillips in his introduction to Ernest Hemingway on Writing, "he maintained that it was bad luck to talk about writing." Hemingway seems to have courted bad luck. Phillips has amassed a slender book's worth of Hemingway's reflections on writing, culled from letters, books, interviews, speeches, and an unpublished manuscript. These musings are arranged into topics such as "Advice to Writers," "Working Habits," and "Obscenity" (of which there is plenty here). Sometimes ponderous, other times offhand, these thoughts form a portrait of a man driven to create not solely the best writing he could, but the best writing, period. Hemingway craved exactness, both in his work and in the work of others; he strove to make every word necessary. "Eschew the monumental," he wrote to Maxwell Perkins in 1932. "Shun the Epic. All the guys who can paint great big pictures can paint great small ones." His aim? Mere perfection. "I write one page of masterpiece to ninety one pages of shit," he confided to F. About the Author
Ernest Hemingway did more to change the style of English prose than any other writer in the twentieth century, and for his efforts he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established Ernest Hemingway as one of the greatest literary lights of the twentieth century. As part of the expatriate community in 1920s Paris, the former journalist and World War I ambulance driver began a career that led to international fame. He covered the Spanish Civil War, portraying it in fiction in his brilliant novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, and he subsequently covered World War II. His classic novella The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. He died in 1961.

Very inspirational. Lovely collection by a master writer.

When I got this book in the mail, I was disappointed at first. I thought I was going to be buying something akin to Stephen King's On Writing, but as soon as I read the introduction from the editor, I learned that Hemingway thought it was bad luck to talk about writing. So of course he would never create a manifesto like King did. I thought, "Great, these are going to be the same quotes you can find online." Nope. I was wrong.

This is essentially a collection of his thoughts on writing gathered from interviews and letters. The editors obviously took a long, painstaking process of putting everything together, and it has quickly become something I am going to treasure.

My reaction to John Gardner's On Writing was traumatizing fear that I wasn't good enough. Stephen King's On Writing is great, except it gave me an unrealistic expectation that if I can't write an award-winning novel like Carrie, then I may as well not try at all. However, this book just inspires me. Plain and simple. I also love the fact that since it's broken up into little quotes, I don't have to waste a lot of time reading it, and get back to actually writing.

This short collection exceprts Hemingway's thoughts on writing and criticism. The editor did an excellent job organizing them along thematic lines.

I had read many of these passages in Hem's other works: A Moveable Feast and the letters quoted in Michael Reynold's multi-volume biography of the writer. This collection brings in some highly insightful passages from the writer's journalism and unpublished correspondence. Hemingway's comments on professional critics are highly entertaining and offer catharsis for the would-be or younger writer.

Ultimately, I simply wanted more. Ten dollars for a short read--while packed with insight--is a lot for a small book. I highly recommend it for anyone unfamiliar with Hemingway's personal views on the craft of writing.

Random quotes, loosely related.

I wasn't aware that this was merely a loose collection of quotes on writing. This can be useful, but it actually makes for boring reading. This type of material would be more appropriate on a calendar.

I recommend getting Stephen King's On Writing: 10th Anniversary Edition: A Memoir of the Craft.

This is the second novel in the Oregon Files series featuring Juan Cabrillo as the chairman of the Corporation, a group of ex-military and intelligence operatives who hire themselves out to countries and individuals needing specialized services--"a private army of mercenaries with a conscience." The Oregon is a 500-foot-long cargo steamer with a state-of-the-art communications and command center and a helicopter. The group's mission is to pick up a meteorite and deliver it to the CIA. It might be made of iridium, and iridium can be used to construct a "dirty bomb." Muslim terrorists who have stolen a nuclear device may use the radioactive material in the meteorite to vaporize a large Western city. Another group, led by a demented industrialist, seeks to destroy the Islamic world. As always, the plot covers many locales around the world, and the dialogue contains lots of military jargon. The large cast of characters includes Elton John and Eric the Red (yes, the legendary explorer). Even though the good guys always win, Cussler fans will remain engaged. George Cohen

Primer means primer, but good primer

This book really is for the true beginner in international taxation. If you are a professional, it is probably not the source you are looking for. However, for a person who does not have knowledge in this field or has never practiced, I think it will be a brilliant book to read.

The book in itself is very well structured and very clearly written. I use it a primer for my young associates when they join my firm and have been very pleased with what they learn from it. Once they have read and "metabolized" this book, they are ready to get started, and as far as I know, there is no other work to pick up where this primer leaves the subject.

In other words, this is "only" a primer, but as far as primers go, it is a brilliant one. Buy it if you are a beginner or if you have lots of beginners in your firm.

Truly a good primer

This is the only book I found that actually explained everything in its table of contents in a way that I could understand. This is an excellent book for a total beginner just trying to understand the basic issues of thin capitalization rules, deductions vs. exemptions vs. credits, double taxation, tax sparing, tax havens, etcetera.

About the Author
Mario Mignone is the founder and director of the Center for Italian Studies at Stony Brook University. He is director of student exchange programs with University of Rome "La Sapienza" and University of Messina. Mignone served as chairman of the department of French and Italian at Stony Brook for nine years, founded the Association of Italian American Educators and served as its first president. He is a former president of the Long Island Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Italian.

"The Story of My People" is an extremely captivating book which illustrates first hand what it is to achieve "The American Dream" for Immigrants during the 1960's. Mario Mignone takes us on an incredible journey describing eloquently the courage and hardships that he endured for the sake of success, along with his drive to earn an education during his years at City College, NY. Through the chapters, he has captured the social and cultural transformation of the Italian immigrant student, along with their deep rooted sense of pride in their rich heritage. It was very moving for me, as I was also a part of this historical experience, which marked a period in time where "The American Dream" seemed almost unattainable. by Giuseppe Battista

The Story of My People is a great book for everyone to read and that I very highly recommend it. In the Story of My People, Mario Mignone has given us a realistic experience of an immigrant Italian family of eight children who left the agricultural land of Benevento in the 1960s to settle in the new world of New York and Westchester.
In the Story of My People you feel the difficult experiences of growing up in Italy in the 1950s and 1960s and the struggle and achievement of the American dream of success in the new land of opportunities by every single member of the Mignone family. A dream achieved by sacrifice, hard work, family unity, family love, family care and a great faith in God.

Mario Mignone’s book The Story of My People deserves to be read by all the Italian immigrants and in my opinion it belongs in the reading list of all the courses on Italian immigration. In his book Mario.Mignone shares with his readers the secret formula that allowed the eight young children of two Italian immigrants to become doctors, college Professors, High School and Elementary School teachers. Since I met the newly arrived Mignone’s family the same week they arrived from Italy, I consider myself an eye witness of the extraordinary American successful experience. I truly believe that the author has been able to detach himself completely as one of the main characters of the book and was able to become an impartial teller of his family successful American experience. The main character in my opinion is the author’s mother Palmina Mignone, an extraordinary woman with only a 3rd grade education. She “had the strength, the courage, and determination to provide love, affection, dedication, wisdom and leadership for the family. She became the “matriarch” of the Mignone’s family. Mario Mignone became my role model and I began to follow his footsteps. He installed in me the need of an American education and the importance of an advanced and terminal degree. Thank you Mario for being my friend and congratulations to the Mignone’s family for the extraordinary successful American experience.
