About the Author

ANURAG S. RATHORE is a consultant of Biotech CMC Issues. He is also a faculty at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India. His previous roles included management positions at Amgen Inc., Thousand Oaks, California and Pharmacia Corp., St. Louis, Missouri. His areas of interest include process development, scale-up, technology transfer, process validation, process analytical technology and quality by design. He has authored more than 180 publications and presentations in these areas. He is presently serving as the Editor-in-Chief of Preparative Biochemistry and Biotechnology and serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards for Biotechnology Progress, BioPharm International, Pharmaceutical Technology Europe and Separation and Purification Reviews. Dr. Rathore has edited books titled Quality by Design for Biopharmaceuticals: Perspectives and Case Studies (2009), Elements of Biopharmaceutical Production (2007), Process Validation (2005), Electrokinetic Phenomena (2004) and Scale-up and Optimization in Preparative Chromatography (2003). He has a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Yale University.

Gail Sofer: After serving as the director of Regulatory Services at BioReliance for 6 years, Dr. Sofer has recently joined GE Healthcare (formerly Amersham Biosciences) as the director of Regulatory Compliance in a new consulting team. Her publications include numerous articles and book chapters on downstream processing, virus inactivation, and validation. She has also coedited and authored several books. She serves on the Science Advisory Board of PDA, the Editorial Advisory Boards of BioPharm, BioQuality, and BioProcess International, and the Scale-Up Advisory Board of Genetic Engineering News. She chairs a PDA task force on virus filters and is cochair of the ASTM subcommittee on Adventitious Agents for Tissue Engineered Medical Products. She holds an M.S. degree in biochemistry from the University of Miami.

The content is almost identical to the existing book

The content of this book is almost identical to the book entitled Process Validation in manufacturing of Biopharmaceuticals edited by Anurag Singh Rathore and Gail Sofner From Informa. Only a few title is newly added. I have no idea other titles are revised or updated because I have no intention to purchase this kind of repetition book.

The third edition of Process Validation in Manufacturing of Biopharmaceuticals is a mix of new and updated chapters. I particularly enjoyed reading the chapters on new US FDA guidance on process validation, risk based validation and process validation with a CMO. Overall, I felt the book remains THE reference on the subject of process validation, particularly for biotech therapeutics and is a timeless reference and guide on the subject and is applicable to any drug manufacturing process that employs chromatography. Kudos to the editors and authors for such a great job!

Excellent reference resource; perhaps you need a deep understanding of validation to follow it. My suggestion is to include examples (483's, approval letters etc...) or to design activities you can use with prospective students that are required to use it as a textbook for a process validation course.

With this volume, author and sociologist Sennett (The Culture of the New Capitalism) launches a three-book examination of "material culture," asking "what the process of making concrete things reveals to us about ourselves." Taking in everything from Pandora and Hephaestus to Linux programmers, Sennett posits that the spirit of craftsmanship-an "enduring, basic human impulse, the desire to do a job well for its own sake"-is tragically lacking in many areas of the industrialized world. Craftsmanship, by combining skill, commitment and judgment, establishes a close relationship between head and hand, man and machine, that Sennett asserts is vital to physical, mental and societal well-being; the symptoms of craftsmanship-deficiency can be found in worker demoralization, inefficiency and waning loyalty from both employees and employers, as well as other (largely institutional) effects. Sennett looks at the evolution of craftsmanship and the historical forces which have stultified it, how it's learned in the areas it still thrives (among scientists, artists, cooks, computer programmers and others), and issues of quality and ability (skill, not talent, makes a craftsman). Sennett considers an array of artisans across different periods, from ancient Chinese chefs to contemporary mobile-phone designers, in this powerful meditation on the "skill of making things well." The template of craftsmanship, he finds, combines a "material consciousness" with a willingness to put in years of practice (a common estimate of the time required to master a craft is ten thousand hours) and a strategic acceptance of ambiguity, rather than an obsessive perfectionism. Sennett’s aim is to make us rethink the notion that society benefits most from a workforce trained to respond to the metamorphoses of a global economy. Ultimately, he writes, the difficulties and possibilities of craft can teach "techniques of experience" that help us relate to others, and lead to an "ethically satisfying" pride in one’s work.

A complex but very rewarding read about craftsmanship, pride ...

A complex but very rewarding read about craftsmanship, pride in one's work and the differences between individual work and mechanical production, and the intellectual investment in the former versus the more mechanistic approach in the latter.
Sennet uses many examples from the world of music to illustrate his thesis and he finishes with an explanation of the philosophical underpinnings of his ideas, pragmatism in this case.
This book has an extensive index and bibliography and his examples are well-chosen and illustrative and evidence of his wide understanding of the matter. Not a book to read on the beach or a plane or even at home in a week or so. It requires time and patience and is rewarding even when dipping into individual sections but the real benefit comes with the final section brings together the threads and leaves the (this) reader with much more understanding of this field of human endeavour than one had before.

An Important Re-framing of an Old Idea

Richard Sennett has been one of my most-preferred interpreters of physical and social culture since Flesh and Stone. He tackles issues that got trampled by misapplications of lit-crit and semiotic theory over the last few decades, and manages to get them back into the discussion. He has a rather dogged style: history, explication, and journalistic fairness are treated like responsibilities in language that is mostly quite dry, even bland. But what he lacks in vivacity, he more than covers with solid, methodical argumentation and a heartening tendency to broaden concepts and include the truly modern. In this volume, for example, Sennett adds Linux programming to the list of what we normally think of as craft, and I think he makes his case. Craft is a wicked thicket for us Moderns: we have not kept pace with its devaluation in an age of competitive production and disposable workers, and the quality of our handwork has suffered, but Sennett also convinces me that our comprehension of the world and the place of humans in it has suffered, because good craft is the meeting of mind and hand. What devalues handwork impoverishes the human mind. We lose our capacity for imagination.

I read this book very closely, pencil in hand, convinced that Sennett has contributed greatly to our understanding of what it means to be human in a machine age. I believe that his work has eclipsed Hannah Arendt's by now. Excellent.

In every poetic phrase, Matz outlines and advances a original vision that others in his field may have sensed in glimmers and shadows, but never fully articulated.
