Michael Grant is a highly successful and renowned historian of the ancient world. This book is an amazing achievement!

Michael Grant is a peerless writer on the ancient world. His earlier book on King Herod was superb. This comprehensive review of the history of Israel is the best thing of its kind I have ever seen. I am ordering a copy for myself even before finishing it. It will be a key reference book and essential background preparation for my own book in progress about early Christianity. Michael Grant knows how to write. And he covers all essential points in clear and insightful fashion.

Not a lot of detail.

This book is a "light" read.It covers a lot of histroical areas,but not in much detail.

The author uses the name "Yahweh".He gives some details on the books of the Old Testament mostly.

He writes about the "source theory" and some of the differences in beliefs such as when the name Yahweh was first known in OT times.

There are some interesting theories:

Zilpah and Bilhah were of "mixed race".

The tribe of Levi never went to Egypt at all.

The idea that boiling a kid in it's mother's milk was a Canaanite,magic fertility rite.

The possible split authorship of Isaiah,1-39 and 40-66.

He mentions a few times in passing the lost ten tribes of Israel and the history of Samaria as a capitol for King Omri.

This is a book suited to someone wanting a starter type book on Biblical history.

I would recommend "Restoring the Original Bible" by Ernest L. Martin to anyone wanting a more detailed study of Biblical history.

This is an excellent resource on understanding the history of Israel following the text of the Hebrew Bible. Michael Grant is a superb writer, who conveys a solid knowledge of the Hebrew Bible, Jewish history, and commentary in a single accessible, and enjoyable text. A must read for teachers both academic and religious.

The second edition of this excellent work has been thoroughly revised and updated to take into account new research in the field of Old Testament studies. The book now also includes important new contributions from six leading biblical studies scholars: Leslie C. Allen, James R. Battenfield, John E. Hartley, Robert L. Hubbard Jr., John E. McKenna, and William B. Nelson Jr. Reflecting the best of evangelical scholarship, Old Testament Survey provides a comprehensive study of the nature and contents of each of the thirty-nine books of the Old Testament and also considers the historical data and theological themes relevant to the Hebrew Scriptures. Part 1 covers the five books of the Pentateuch. Part 2 studies the books of the Prophets, with special consideration given to the birth and history of Israel's monarchy, the role of prophets and prophecy, and the nature of Hebrew poetry. Part 3 examines the Writings, including a special study of wisdom literature in general. Frederic William Bush is Senior Professor of Ancient Near Eastern Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California.

Very informative book, but the authors ride the fence

I thought that this was a really interesting textbook. The authors reveal the message of each Old Testament book, while discussing some of the scholarly issues surrounding each part of the Old Testament (such as the JEDP theory). Unfortunately William Lasor passed away in 1991, so Hubbard (who is dead now too) and Bush recruited six other OT scholars to complete the revision. This may be one of the reasons why the authors ride the fence on issues such as whether or not we can take the numbers in Numbers literally, the number of Isaiah's, the historical worthiness of Joshua and Jonah, and the happenings surrounding the Exodus from Egypt. The authors also seem to lean toward the book of Jonah being a parable rather than actual history, although they don't take a really strong stand on that, either.

The reviewer who wrote that this book supports the JEDP theory was mistaken: In fact, the authors predict that this theory will eventually be out of vogue with scholarship. What the authors do affirm is that Moses was originally responsible for the Pentateuch and that through the centuries, the community revised and updated it.

And contrary to an earlier reviewer, I didn't find the book tedious at all: It was very well written and very interesting throughout. I especially appreciated the articles at the end about the Authority of the Old Testament for Christians, Messianic prophecy, and the chronological puzzle.

In short, I recommend this book, only wishing that the authors would take a stand on some of the issues discussed above.

Students! This is a lab book. The pages are designed to be removed and answers written on the appropriate blank lines before turning them in to the instructor for grading. Do NOT purchased this book "used", or even "rent" it because pages WILL be missing. Lab books should only be purchased new. That way, you will be sure that there are no missing pages.

As an instructor, I've settled on this lab book for my class. It is an excellent book.

Those doubting the merits of the one size fits all approach ask whether priority should be given to serving the present needs of populations in dire need of medication or to promoting global innovation. The book looks in detail into the legal issues and ethical debates to ask the following three main questions: First, what are the ideas, goals, and broader ethical visions that underpin questions of governance and the legal reasoning employed by administrative agencies? Second, how can we democratize the decision making process of technocratic institutions such as the European Patent Office? Finally, how can we make the global intellectual property system more equitable? In answering these questions the book seeks to contribute to our understanding of the role and function of regulatory agencies in the regulation of the bioeconomy, explains the process of interpretation of legal norms, and proposes ways to rethink the reform of the patent system through the lens of legitimacy.

A great self-counseling and self-help book!

A great self-counseling and self-help book, using clinically proven methods for improving your emotions!

Your goal for your emotions explains Pucci, is "calm." People often mistakenly believe that the only goal for significant depression and anxiety is happiness, when in fact, the goal needs to be calm. Learning to feel calm in the midst of unfortunate events allows you to more often feel happiness and contentment when things are going well.

I recommend beginning with Chapter 3, "Our Emotional ABC's." People mistakenly believe that A (Adverse events) directly cause C (Consequences of emotions, such as significant anxiety, anger, or depression). In fact, A (Adverse events) trigger B (Beliefs & self-talk) and B (Beliefs & self talk) primarily cause C (Consequences of Emotions such as depression, anxiety, anger, or your goal of Calm). When you learn the details of this essential fact and learn how to use ABC self-help methods, you will experience significant improvement in your emotions.

I have taught the ABCs to my own children when they were growing up and I practice the ABCs of emotions in my life.

A note to counselors - read this book and learn how to more easily present self-help methods to your clients in counseling sessions. This book is directly related to rational emotive behavior therapy and at [...] are listed over 500 outcome REBT research studies. All therapists want to accelerate therapy for their clients. Ask your clients to read, "The Client's Guide to Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy" in order to accelerate your counseling and therapy.

Anxiously Awaiting

As a long time anxiety sufferer, I've read all the books available pertaining to working with the symptoms. Relax, they all say. Unfortunately, relaxing only makes the issue worse as its not confronted head-on. I've always thought relaxing was the key too, but alas, this book by Pucci set the record straight. Since incorporating his techniques, I've noted enough improvement so to be able to stop taking my medication.

CBT is probably not for everyone but well worth investing the cost of the book to find out if its right for you. I don't know Pucci, but am thankful for his contribution to this issue through his book. Don't delay in ordering it. Your recovery begins the moment you begin reading it.

Some useful information

I found some interesting and helpful information in this book. However, there are a couple of points the author makes with which I disagree. Aldo Pucci says that people "can't make you" feel a certain way; I think that, while your feelings may be colored by your past experiences, people can and do trigger sadness, anger, love, joy, etc. by their behavior towards each other. To suggest otherwise is to say that we're absolved from having any responsibility for treating one another with caring and kindness -- that's not the kind of world in which I want to live! Also, Pucci says that, beyond infancy, a person "can't be killed" from a lack of love. Again, I beg to differ; while a loveless life won't strike you dead like a bolt of lightning, there have been countless studies showing that people going through life without a partner die earlier. So, while Pucci gives some useful examples of "stinkin' thinkin'" and how to counteract such negative self-messages, his emphasis on a totally self-reliant life seems bleak and lonely to me.
