A Wealth of Information

This is a peer reviewed collection of essays on the perils of going to sea. While the essays are written by a diverse group of people, primarily university connected, they have been reviewed by the other contributors and by other experts in their fields. The main approach of the book is to provide the statistical background of the accidents, injuries, and acts of piracy in which ocean going ships were involved.

Upon receiving the book, my first action was to read Chapters 6 & 7 on Ship Piracy. Unfortunately these chapters did not disclose any guaranteed not to fail techniques that would stop a practice that has been going on for thousands of years. But they did provide some background information on the number of incidents, their financial and human impact, their locations and more. I do not know of another source of this kind of information.

In turn, the other chapters provided similar information on other subjects such as those listed above. Here is a wealth of information. While the cost of the book is high, to collect this information would be extremely time consuming.

A masterpiece in both scope and detail.........

Henri Troyat has done a superb job of crafting the life story of Leo Tolstoy into something which almost reads as a novel, a page-turner in its own right. The intimacy with which he thoroughly knows of and understands Leo Tolstoy's life and his works is nothing short of remarkable, and this is a biography I would be surprised at seeing bettered any time down the road. Tolstoy is on view for all to see, from his world-renowned works, to personal letters written to close acquaintances, to his own personal diary, Troyat makes use of every available resource to give us an up close and personal view of Tolstoy's life. The research done in comprising this most thorough work of Tolstoy's life is simply astonishing. Troyat has crafted a masterpiece which is fun to read, though admittedly this was made a tad easier as it was biography of Tolstoy's life he had to work with.

Tolstoy is a man of many dichotomies and this is at least partly what makes his life so very interesting. He was one of the greatest writers of all time, yet he despised literature. He inspired a peace movement led by Gandhi, and yet at one time owned peasants (admittedly early on in his life). He wrote of how life should be lived, and yet could not get along with his own wife (and wound up dying in a train station at the age of 82). The life of Leo Tolstoy cannot be summarized in a few short paragraphs, and even if it could, it would be doing a great man a grave injustice. Tolstoy deserves a biography which is comprehensive in depth and contains details not only of his life but also of his works......Troyat has given us this. And throughout this book, Troyat draws comparisons between Tolstoy and characters in his literature, such as the time his brothers dragged him to a brothel at the age of 17, leaving him to feel ashamed afterwards (while in one of his works the character visits a brothel only to cry at the edge of the bed afterwards). Many other examples abound throughout the narrative where Tolstoy writes himself into his works. But the average reader would probably not be able to distinguish when Tolstoy in fact does this without the exceptional work of Henri Troyat. Throughout the book it is all too evident that this was a work which Troyat put his heart and soul into, giving us insight into a great man whose life was so wide-ranging, from his early life in Moscow, to his middle years in the Caucauses, to his later years on Yasnaya Polyana. Tolstoy deserves a biography which is a masterpiece in both scope and detail....and Henri Troyat has provided this magnificently.

Enlightening!

This book is very informative yet reads as lively as a Tolstoy novel. Reading this before, during, or after you read "War and Peace" is very enlightening. Interesting the fact that the author of "War and Peace" struggled with history in school and exclaimed that history was "nothing but a heap of myths and useless, trivial details, sprinkled with dates and names". Other wisdoms include "Bronchitis is an imaginary disease! Bronchitis is a metal!" Highly entertaining. I had to deduct one star due to the fact that there is not one picture in this biography which I find quite odd.

Overly detailed and opinionated

Tolstoy's biography by Troyat is thoroughly documented, and Tolstoy certainly is an interesting subject for a book. I recommend it for people looking for an authoritative source of information.
However, taken as a book to be read, not referenced, it has serious flaws. The main one, which I find inexcusable, is Troyat's comments throughout the book "explaining" Tolstoy to the reader, and being shocked at Tolstoy's inconsistencies. Troyat will show us a scene where Tolstoy lays down a plan for virtuous conduct in his diary, then breaks his own code. Troyat exclaims: "Paradox! Tolstoy is a strange man, breaking his own code". Well, Mr. Troyat, don't we all?
Then, at another instance, he will characterize, say, Turgenev's judgement of Tolstoy, as "lacking in psychology". Troyat, of course, would have known better. In other words, Troyat doesn't try to erase himself from the book, we see his footprints all over. The book should have been named "Troyat's superior knowledge of Tolstoy".
Another related problem with this book is excessive documentation. We are witness to too many changes of opinion in Tolstoy. For, say, his doubts about his feelings for Sofya Bers, this is revealing, but we are subjected to the same ceremony for each acquaintance made by Tolstoy. The point was well taken from the beginning: Tolstoy changed his opinion of himself and others very often. And again, I don't see this as strange: many people are like that. But by the fourth time I saw Tolstoy meet someone, then write on successive days "Excellent" "Superficial" "Vain" "Far superior to me" etc. I was about to give up on the book. In contrast, we don't see enough of what others thought of Tolstoy, and that is a pity, especially since the book's excessive focus on Tolstoy's inner struggle makes it grey and humorless.
To sum it up: can serve well as a reference book, but not as a novel. Read Tolstoy himself, he is more revealing.

15 Insights from Trading Psychology 2.0

I made so many highlights on Trading Psychology 2.0 that my kindle copy looks like a Christmas tree. I find it deeply insightful, eye-opening and a great source of fresh ideas on how to bridge the gap between where we are today and where we would like to be - not only in trading but in life.

Trading Psychology 2.0 is based on four major themes: Adapting to changing markets; Building strengths; Cultivating creativity; and Developing best practices and processes. Here are fifteen interesting quotes from the book:

1. Discipline, while necessary for success, is never sufficient. Discipline does not substitute for skill, talent, and insight. Strict, disciplined adherence to mediocre plans can only lock in mediocre results. If it were otherwise, there would be no losing automated trading systems.

2. It is not enough to find an “edge” in financial markets; as any tech entrepreneur can attest, competitive advantages are perishable commodities. Those who sustain success continually renew themselves, uncovering fresh sources of competitive advantage. That requires processes for assessing and challenging our most basic assumptions and practices. It takes a good trader to create success, a great one to recreate it. Nothing is quite as difficult— and rewarding— as letting go of what once worked, returning to the humble status of student, and arising phoenix-like from performance ashes.

3. This productivity is readily apparent on a day-to-day, week-to-week basis: The greats simply get more done than their colleagues. They organize their time and prioritize their activities so that they are both efficient (get a lot done per unit of time) and effective (get the right things done). How much time do we typically waste as traders, staring unthinkingly at screens, chatting with people who offer little insight, and reading low-priority/ information-poor emails and reports? The successful traders invariably are workhorses, not showhorses: They get their hands dirty rooting through data and make active use of well-cultivated information networks.

4. Successful traders I've known work as hard on themselves as on markets. They develop routines for keeping themselves in ideal states for making trading decisions, often by optimizing their lives outside of markets.

5. This, for me as a psychologist, has been one of the greatest surprises working with professional money managers: The majority of traders fail, not because they lack needed psychological resources but because they cannot adapt to what Victor Niederhoffer refers to as “ever-changing cycles.” Their frustration is a result of their rigid trading, not the primary cause. No psychological exercises, in and of themselves, will turn business around for the big-box retailer that fails to adapt to online shopping or the gaming company that ignores virtual reality. The discipline of sticking to one's knitting is destined for failure if it is not accompanied by equally rigorous processes that ensure adaptive change.

6. Routine is necessary for efficiency; breaking routine is necessary for adaptation.

7. We often refer to trading as if it's a single activity. Trading, however, is like medicine: a broad set of activities and specialties. A psychiatrist is a physician; so is a surgeon, and so is a radiologist. The skills required for each are very different. So it is in financial markets. How different that is from the newbie whose decision making is limited to a few mechanical chart “setups”!

12. If we were to investigate the daily P& L of an emotionally intelligent trader, we would find occasions of trading actively and occasions of standing back. We would see periods of high-risk taking and periods of caution. All markets are not created equal: Some bring more opportunity, some less. The self-aware trader knows when “it's my market” and goes into opportunity-seeking mode. That same trader knows when “it's not my market” and preserves capital.

13. A small win is a small mirror. It reflects a winning image to us. Accumulate enough small wins and that winning image starts to become familiar. We internalize that which we experience repeatedly. That's one of the reasons positive emotional experience is important....People I've known who are particularly adaptive have made small wins a habit pattern. They undertake many new challenges and regularly define meaningful, doable goals. They set themselves up for success. Positivity becomes a habit, a lifestyle, making the whole issue of discipline moot.

14. Perfectionism drains energy. It does not inspire performance; it turns inspired performance into something “not good enough.” The idea of small wins means that your focus should not be on perfection, but on improvement.

15. Many of our actions in the heat of battle are more biologically than logically driven.

One of my favorite trading writers, but not his best book

Steenbarger is a psychologist who dabbles in trading, If you have an analytical bent and want to understand your trading better, you should just read all four of his books. I like how Steenbarger often ties his writing to research within the broad field of psychology. That is why I said that you need an analytic bent to enjoy this book. There are lots of interesting ideas in it that are not really that developed. You can consider it a source book of not so tested ideas. This is meant as a compliment.

If you are new to the author, start by reading hisThe Daily Trading Coach: 101 Lessons for Becoming Your Own Trading Psychologist. Then you can move onto the current book. Since the current book is his fourth on the same topic I would definitely not start by reading it.

this book is chock full of good stuff. As a retail trader

as always, nothing but top notch content from Brett. I'm giving this one 4 stars however, because the content in this book is clearly geared more for his professional clients, managing large business and accounts. Many of the tips are very interesting in a professional setting, rather than a small one man shop. If you are a RIA or CFP, this book is chock full of good stuff. As a retail trader, after the first third, the book started losing fidelity for me in 'i could use this' info. Most of the retail/daytrader info is covered in prior books in better detail, and summed up with "take your trading seriously, keep records and treat it like a business". I will preorder every book brett writes, and i read every post on his blog, and so should you.

Not the best for beginning nursing research classes

I'm sure this is a good resource for some nursing research classes, but as a required text for my nursing research class, it did not provide the information I needed to complete assignments. This is more a school issue rather than a book issue. There are other nursing research books out there that explain things in a manner which is easier for the novice nurse researcher to interpret. Because I needed to find other sources which explained things in a manner that was easier to interpret I'm giving the book three stars. It has lots of information, but if you are new to nursing research it doesn't use language which is effective at helping the learner grasp concepts easily.

Bought this text as optional, additional reference to use in studying for my doctoral comps exam and found it to be the absolutely most useful text of all of my books, including those required in several of my classes! It is comprehensive, well-designed, and avoids frivolous detail. I would recommend it to all graduate nursing students without reservation.

Representations of Muslims have never been more common in the Western imagination than they are today. Building on Orientalist stereotypes constructed over centuries, the figure of the wily Arab has given rise, at the dawn of the twenty-first century, to the "Islamist" terrorist. In Idols in the East, Suzanne Conklin Akbari explores the premodern background of some of the Orientalist types still pervasive in present-day depictions of Muslims―the irascible and irrational Arab, the religiously deviant Islamist―and about how these stereotypes developed over time.

Idols in the East contributes to the recent surge of interest in European encounters with Islam and the Orient in the premodern world. Focusing on the medieval period, Akbari examines a broad range of texts including encyclopedias, maps, medical and astronomical treatises, chansons de geste, romances, and allegories to paint an unusually diverse portrait of medieval culture. Among the texts she considers are The Book of John Mandeville, The Song of Roland, Parzival, and Dante's Divine Comedy. From them she reveals how medieval writers and readers understood and explained the differences they saw between themselves and the Muslim other.

Looking forward, Akbari also comes to terms with how these medieval conceptions fit with modern discussions of Orientalism, thus providing an important theoretical link to postcolonial and postimperial scholarship on later periods. Far reaching in its implications and balanced in its judgments, Idols in the East will be of great interest to not only scholars and students of the Middle Ages but also anyone interested in the roots of Orientalism and its tangled relationship to modern racism and anti-Semitism.
