Good but requires a lot of study

I can recommend this book if you want to understand the "Market Profile" concept, which is a special way of charting price movement. The book is well written and contains a lot of information which takes some time to digest.

The key weakness with the book is that the reader has to do a lot of work in addition to create a useful approach out of the information provided. The authors keep noting that the Market Profile cannot be used for forecasting. With this they seem to mean longer term forecasting.

This is a much better book that the 2007 book by the same authors.

Update 2013: I have concluded that the material is not worth my time. Still it might suit some people. I have downgraded the book from 4 to 3 stars; for specialists only.

A good alternative filter for the markets.

The title of this book can be a bit misleading. The subject matter has little to do with the mental side of trading. Rather, it's a quite thorough discussion of the Market Profile technique for market analysis and trading. Market Profile is essentially an alternative charting method which has been used by professionals in the futures market for years, but has yet to gain wider acclaim in the broader arena because it is not a feature readily available on retail charting packages. For those who take the time to learn it, however, Market Profile can be a very valuable resource.

Mind Over Markets takes the reader through the full topic of Market Profile, from basic to advanced. It discusses the underlying logic behind the methodology and how to apply it. The authors use numerous examples to discuss the various patterns and set-ups which occur, and how one can trade them for maximum benefit.

That said, one seeking a fully developed trading system will not find it here. The authors encourage the reader to spend time working with the Market Profile to get a feel for it for application in their own trading. They do not give many hard and fast rules. This can be annoying for one seeking a straight-forward system, but the fact of the matter is the market is variable. What works one time may not work other times, at least not in the same way.

The bottom line is that Market Profile is a tool. It is a way to look at the markets differently than one normally does, which can be a good thing, and Mind Over Markets is an excellent resource along those lines. Is it for everyone? Probably not, but even if you don't end up using Market Profile, there is still some value to be had in reading Mind Over Markets and understanding the overall message of market action and movement.

a way to frame the markets

I think the reason that at least one reviewer mentioned this book and the phrase "holy grail" is that this books contains an exhaustive exposition of the types or forms of days that the market can have with respect to different time periods. Trading strategies and technical analysis, which are really the only tools that readers can cull from popular trading books, don't really provide a frame, or thorough way to look at the market. Market Profile on the other hand thoroughly explains the auction process in terms of buyer and sellers without recourse to some filter--it's market generated information, not imposed rules. In this sense, it's invaluable. The trading rules thereby procede from what the market tells you. Of course, the market can still fool you but what the book teaches you is how to listen to the market and interpret in its simplest, particulate forms.

My review is at a very abstract level, but the book provides, with maybe too many examples, the types of days that a market can have and their implications and indications. For example, the authors would say that if the trading in the first half hour is within a limited range, then it has a high chance of trading outside that range; if it goes out of that range to the downside, then we have a strong seller presence. If buyers don't step up to buy in this new range, then we would anticipate that sellers are in control of the market, at which point we should place a short position. Now, the market can continue its trend, establish a new range, or buyers can step in to create what is called a buying tail, which is a sign that buyers find value at the new lows. This is a bit complicated, but once you read the book and understand the possible market movements, then it all becomes almost algorithmic and intuitive at the same time. A better title might be "market sense," in the same way that common sense tells us how to frame everyday human situations.

Laughter, knowledge and disbelief all in one go - love it!

I was given this book as an early birthday present from a friend last week and I literally haven't put it down! James Egan is a great author, I loved the last book I read '365 Ways to Stop Sabotaging Your Life' and this book is just as enjoyable. You'd never believe there were so many things in life that you could swear were true but are complete nonsense! Such a fun book - amusing, content rich and very informative. 5 stars :)

Great short romance

I really liked this book. When I am in the mood for a shorter story i always go to Presents. This one was a very similar story of poor girl meets prince, but the writing made it very original and very good. The characters where developed well and you could understand their actions and reactions to each situation. Very good developement for a shorter story. Got me laughing and crying but enjoyed the full story. Would read from this reader again.

Holly is a waitress who ends up serving herself to Prince Casper. He thinks she's a gold digger out for publicity and money. Holly becomes pregnant after that one encounter and despite not believing he is the father, Casper marries her. They have hot sexual chemistry, but Casper says he doesn't do love. Holly is a really sweet person who quickly wins over the staff and people of her new country. Will she win over Casper?

I really liked this book. It is sexy, romantic, and fun. I really liked Holly. She's very spunky and doesn't back down from what she wants or thinks. Casper is a royal and has been hurt in the past, but still strives to make Holly happy, despite his misgivings.

I would have liked another chapter or epilogue to tell us how things were when the baby came. I docked one star for this. Other than that, I really enjoyed this book and recommend it!

This book was an entertaining read that occassionally made me smile. The heroine is feisty without being a b#$%*^, and the hero is the typical billionare Italian prince. Holly is likeable because is just too nice to hate, but she stayed with the hero even when she should have shoved her boots heels in his soft tissues and made a break for a life without the perpetual downer (aka Casper).

Casper is a hypersexual Italian male with a libido to rival the entire UK rugby team.

SPOILER: At the beginning of the book, during the first stages of his rather easy seduction of Holly, he asks her if she is using protection. Now, one would assume that since she doesn't have external genitalia, that he is referring to protection from pregnancy. Later on in the book we discover that Casper BELIEVES he is infertile - sterile - shooting blanks...so WHY does he ask Holly is she is using protection?! That's like handing a blind man a blind fold.

Now that I have raised this question, I will summarize my opinion of this book:

It is a quick, fun read, but don't be surprised that when someone asks you if you liked it, all you can do is shrug and say, "Meh".

By emphasizing 'difference' as something to be managed many organizations institute the 'problem of difference', and while orgainzations pay lip-service to ideas of equality, their day-to-day practices may be unchanged and unchallenged. Discrimination of various groups such as women, immigrants and older people continues and its dynamics remain unclear, largely because of the difficulties of studying it in the field. Additionally, various programs aimed at removing inequality, such as gender equality of managing diversity programs, may actually promote it by making differences visible and stabilizing them. Management, under these circumstances, comes to refer to the management of appearances which take the place of more radical acts to change the 'status quo'.

And we teach, as we shall show later, many emotive, dramatic, fantasy, self-management, and behavior modification methods. More than most other schools of therapy, REBT [Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy] employs a comprehensive, integrative approach to treatment.

We still hold, however, that if you would most thoroughly and permanently change your disturbed feelings, you’d better use considerable reasoning. Because a large element (though not the whole) of destructive emotion stems from unrealistic, illogical, and self-sabotaging thinking.”

Half-baked, self-aggrandizing crap

Book summary:
"I think irrational thoughts."
"Stop thinking those irrational thoughts and replace them with something else."

Done.
This books takes the approach that thoughts rule all.
That is not the case.
Sometimes our bodies manufacture chemicals that lead to certain types of thoughts.
It's a two-way street. And to only focus on one way is folly.

It might be an interesting introduction to CBT, but doesn't explain how real CBT works.
And CBT can only do so much.
The authors' authoritative tone bothers me throughout the book.

This is an entertaining book in some respects, but don't expect it to offer any real help.
Go see a professional.

The absolute best Self-Help book ever.

Of all the Self-Help books (and systems of therapy) out there, Albert Ellis has developed the best one - Cognitive Behavior Therapy/ Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. This book is even better than, The Road Less Traveled, 25th Anniversary Edition : A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth, in my opinion. Take this passage from page 99: "Adults often act in an immature, childish manner. One of the essences of their humanity is fallibility. Consequently, they find it exceptionally easy to do sloppy, wishfulfilling thinking. And thereby often get what they don't want. But the fact that you may easily behave childishly doesn't mean that you must. You can teach yourself to practice mature, reflective thinking. If you do, you will hardly be completely level headed or happy. But you can train yourself to rarely feel desperately miserable or depressed. If, again, you work at it."
This is a great book and I highly recommend it.
