The Soviet agronomist Trofim Lysenko became one of the most notorious figures in twentieth-century science after his genetic theories were discredited decades ago. Yet some scientists, even in the West, now claim that discoveries in the field of epigenetics prove that he was right after all. Seeking to get to the bottom of Lysenko’s rehabilitation in certain Russian scientific circles, Loren Graham reopens the case, granting his theories an impartial hearing to determine whether new developments in molecular biology validate his claims.

In the 1930s Lysenko advanced a “theory of nutrients” to explain plant development, basing his insights on experiments which, he claimed, showed one could manipulate environmental conditions such as temperature to convert a winter wheat variety into a spring variety. He considered the inheritance of acquired characteristics―which he called the “internalization of environmental conditions”―the primary mechanism of heredity. Although his methods were slipshod and his results were never duplicated, his ideas fell on fertile ground during a time of widespread famine in the Soviet Union.

Recently, a hypothesis called epigenetic transgenerational inheritance has suggested that acquired characteristics may indeed occasionally be passed on to offspring. Some biologists dispute the evidence for this hypothesis. Exceptionally Good Work on Lysenko and the Soviet Academy

Graham has written a wonderful book on Lysenko and the Russian School of Genetics during the Stalin era. Lysenko viewed inheritance in the sense that certain characteristics could be handed down in generations based upon environmental factors experienced by parents. That is the change in a genetic makeup was not solely due to genetic changes per se. He could turn summer wheat to winter wheat by getting it used to a change in weather. Thus he did not need a genetic alteration but an environmental alteration was sufficient. In a sense the concept did play into the hands of the Marxist reasoning.

Graham blends the understanding of epigenetic changes that are currently being understood with the ideas of Lysenko and asks if this new understand then justifies Lysenko's ideas. On the other hand, Graham details Lysenko's way of dealing with his academic adversaries often resulting in their imprisonment and demise. The current understanding of gene expression and thus phenotype is that genes can be turned on and off by such epigenetic factors as methylation. Methyl groups bind to the nucleotides and also suppress expression directly by blocking the gene or indirectly by blocking transcription factors.

This is somatic epigenetics. Germ line epigenetics, parent to child has also been observed. Namely effects on the parent causing epigenetic changes can be handed down to the child, where it was assumed that the methylation of certain bases was eliminate but somehow they can be preserved. Thus, in a simplistic sense, an environmental change imprinting the parent can imprint the offspring. This may or may not be consistent in a broad sense with Lysenko but the author discusses it in some detail. Graham's discussion is limited as one would expect in a short book of this type but he does explain some of the issues well including the event of the "Dutch Winter", an epigenetic benchmark.

Graham has a wonderful discussion of his opportunistic meeting with Lysenko at a lunch table in the Russian Academy, and the brief attempt to elicit some explanation from Lysenko. Lysenko was as one would expect defensive since this occurred after he was taken down from his perch yet retained his academic credentials. This discussion is quintessential east meets west based upon my personal experiences in Russia when first meeting some notable. It was clear from Graham's description that Lysenko was still wary especially since Graham had been critical of him in Graham's prior writings.

Graham also presents a clear and coherent discussion of the players in this tragedy, the geneticists following the true path and how Lysenko and his actions resulted in their fall.

The only point that would have been useful to explore would be the need by the Marxist theorists to have a Lysenko position versus a Darwinian one. I had seen this battle with the probabilists. Marxist theory is deterministic and probability is its enemy. Yet many probabilists managed to work and prosper. Individuals like Gnedenko, Kolmogorov, Stratonovich, Markov and others developed the basis for stochastic processes that we see used in fields as broad as finance with the Black-Scholes theorem in options trading, a thought anathema to the Marxists. Graham does provide some insight but it would be worthwhile to have a more in depth discussion of this potential conflict.

Overall the book is an excellent addition to understanding both the Russian Academy and its functioning, the Stalinist management of the overall society, and a petri dish model of Academic infighting. It is very worthwhile for those seeking to understand both Russia as well as the politics of Science, albeit in a different vein.

Does Epigenetics Rescue Lysenkoism? A Fascinating Little Book

Science prides itself on peer-reviewed objectivity but the fascinating experience of Trofim Lysenko's dominance of biology in the Soviet Union in the 1930s to the 1050s shows how ideology can corrupt the scientific process, and in this instance made Soviet genetics a backwater for a generation. Loren Graham, a science historian, brings Lysenkoism up to date by addressing the issue of whether developments in epigenetics, which seem to suggest a form of Lamarckism, have not vindicated Lysenko after all. This is a scholarly but very readable and well-balanced book that neatly integrates Lamarckism (the inheritance of acquired characteristics), Lysenko and Soviet biology, epigenetics, and the Russian reaction to epigenetics and Lysenko's legacy. The book has extensive footnotes and a wonderful bibliography. It also contains a fascinating account of Graham meeting and talking with Lysenko after his downfall in 1971 while the author was studying in Russia.

I give the author credit for tying together the implications of epigenetics for Lamarckism and thus for Soviet-era Lysenkoism. Briefly-stated, epigenetics demonstrates the presence of environmentally-induced gene expression that may persist for several generations; however, the genome (DNA) is unaltered. I'm not a biologist so I can't say whether epigenetics opens the door, even slightly, for Lamarckism, but Graham, who believes in the inheritance of acquired characteristics, seems to think so, and most of Lysenko's Russian nationalist defenders seem to think so, too, according to this book. There are fascinating reviews of these Russian nationalist writers in the Putin era, some with impressive scientific credentials, who favorably contrast Lysenko, Russian practical science, and environmental factors with the molecular biology and genetics of the west. But it's fair to note that Graham includes Russian geneticists who remain critical of Lysenko.

The whole story of Lysenko's influence is a fascinating one. His peasant background was viewed favorably by Stalin and the party while Soviet-era geneticists were viewed suspiciously due to their bourgeoisie backgrounds. Moreover, Lysenko's plans to jumpstart Soviet agriculture by generating better and more productive seeds induced by environmental factors, e.g., cold, humidity, and his rejection of the concept of the gene and natural selection, seemed to accord very well with Soviet Marxist-Leninism and its hurried efforts to remake the world and plan for a more productive future. Natural selection works too slow! Graham tells us that while some Soviet-era ideologists wanted to develop the "New Soviet Man", Lysenko was only interested in plants --- and in keeping his geneticist rivals oppressed. (I guess Stalin left that remolding to his writers who he famously called: "engineers of human souls.")

Francis Crick seemed to shut the door on Lamarckism by what he called the "The Central Dogma of Molecular Biology" (the atheist Crick regretted using the word "dogma") which stated that genetic information (for making an organism) flows in only one direction, i.e., from genotype to phenotype, or alternatively, from nucleic acids to proteins. The other direction would imply a form of Lamarckism, such as an environmentally-induced change in the phenotype that would somehow affect the genome. Molecular biologists for decades vainly struggled to imagine how this reverse flow of information could happen; they of course were not counting direct mutations of DNA from environmental toxins or radiation. Epigenetics doesn't change the genome but shows how environmental factors have affected which genes turn "on" and which turn "off." Does epigenetics suggest, perhaps, a weak form of Lamarckism, and is Lysenkoism a form of Lamarckism. The author would appear to think so, but it should be noted that he remains critical of Lysenko as a poor scientist who was inept at statistics, and who used his power to hound his scientific rivals to the gulag and to death for some of them.

About the Author
Keith Holbert is presently an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy

Engineering of Arizona State University (ASU) where he has been a faculty member since 1989. He

earned his B.S., M.S, and Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from University of Tennessee. His research

expertise is in the area of instrumentation and system diagnostics including radiation effects on sensors.

Keith has performed tests on safety-related systems in more than a dozen nuclear power plants in the U.S.

He has published more than 100 journal and conference papers, a textbook, and holds one patent. Dr.

Holbert is a registered professional (nuclear) engineer (P.E.). Keith is a member of the American Nuclear

Society (ANS) and the American Society for Engineering Education, and a Senior Member of the IEEE

(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). Keith is the Chair of the Arizona Section of the ANS

and the Director of the Nuclear Power Generation Program at ASU. Dr. Holbert presently holds a Guest

Scientist affiliation with Los Alamos National Laboratory. Professor Holbert teaches undergraduate and

graduate engineering courses on electric power generation (from all forms of energy), nuclear reactor

theory and design, nuclear power plant controls and diagnostics, reactor safety analysis, and health

physics and radiation measurements. Besides teaching awards at ASU, Dr. Holbert was recently

recognized with the IEEE Transactions on Education Best Paper award for 2010.

A Good Introduction To Nuclear Concepts

"Nuclear Energy" by Raymond L. Murray now has a sixth edition available, and while I read and am reviewing the fifth edition, I encourage anyone who wants to read this generally fine book to obtain the latest edition. In this volume Murray covers a very broad swath of information, focusing on nuclear processes and civilian nuclear power, but also delving into international aspects of nuclear power, nuclear explosions and armaments, future uses of nuclear power, regulatory issues, and waste disposal. Each chapter is well formulated, and I especially appreciated the concise summaries at the end of chapters.

I found the chapters on nuclear processes to be the best in the book, and particularly enjoyed chapter 12, "Heat Generation and Removal," and found his explanation of nucleate boiling, film boiling, and departure from nucleate boiling ratio" (DNBR, p. 151) to be the most comprehensible I have ever read in an introductory text. I read the book to enhance my understanding of commercial fission reactors mostly to grasp engineered safety systems in operational reactors. In that vein, some sections of the book are a bit esoteric, although still interesting. For instance, some of the discussion in the section 14.6, "Prospects For Fusion" (p.188) goes into such things as the compact stellarator, spherical torus, reversed field pinch, spheromak, floating multipole, and z-pinch concepts in the discussion of magnetic fusion focused on the tokamak mode. My critique isn't that the material is bad, but that most readers of the book are focused on much more basic information. The fusion discussion is by no means a waste overall though, and I particularly liked the inclusion of a quote from fusion pioneer Lyman Spitzer on p. 190 that justifies the entire research discipline: "A fifty percent probability of getting a power source that would last a billion years is worth a great deal of enthusiasm." Brilliant.

While most of the book is very well written, I found isolated sections to be very confusing, particularly section 17.7, "Neutron Activation Analysis," which I re-read several times and still struggled with. Hopefully this has been fixed in the sixth edition, though thankfully these weaker areas are relatively rare. As an aside, some of the exercises require mathematical leaps most people will be unable to make unless the material is taught more in-depth in a classroom environment. This can prove frustrating.

Chapter 22, "Radioactive Waste Disposal," is one of the most important in the book, and also a subject that has drastically changed since this edition was written, most recently with the decision of the Obama administration with the support of Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Senator Harry Reid of Nevada to terminate the Yucca Mountain facility with no plan whatsoever to provide an alternate facility. This latest government boondoggle puts politics over scientific validity, but that comes as no surprise, as Murray points out the failure of Jimmy Carter's equally naive political views on nuclear proliferation and reprocessing on p. 343: "Concern about international proliferation of nuclear weapons prompted President Carter in 1977 to issue a ban on reprocessing. It was believed that if the U.S. refrained from reprocessing, it would set an example to other countries. Of course by eliminating the prospect of reprocessing, Carter committed the U.S. to a "once through" nuclear power system with much greater waste issues to deal with than would occur were reprocessing to be implemented.

Chapter 23, "Laws, Regulations, and Organizations," is of key importance to understanding the industry, and I especially appreciated the information on Performance-Based regulation (pp. 367-368) in the discussion of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. I likewise found the information on the "Institute of Nuclear Power Operations" (INPO) on pp. 370-373 to be excellent. (For more information on INPO I refer readers to the excellent book "Hostages of Each Other" by Joseph Rees.) The country-by-country overview of nuclear power capabilities in chapter 25 is an excellent resource, but is now quite out of date; I'm sure the sixth edition will provide an excellent updated version of the data. Chapter 26, "Nuclear Explosions," tackles militarized nuclear systems, and is generally good, though there are some utopian visions expressed that have no place in a book of this nature, most notably in the summary on p. 435: "In addition to continued efforts to reduce the stockpile of armaments, to secure workable treaties, and utilize technology to provide protection, there is an urgent need to eliminate all the unfavorable conditions-social, economic, and cultural-that prompt conflict in the world." Yeah, that'll happen.

Overall I like the book and while some of the material is a tad esoteric for presentation in an introductory book, the enormity of the subject is generally dealt with quite well by Mr. Murray, and I recommend the book for readers with a serious interest in the subject matter.

Excellent book.

My son, for whom I purchased this book, says that it's an excellent introduction to Nuclear Energy in it's different applications. The only thing he would add to it to enable a 5-star rating would be a review of atoms, protons, electrons, etc. Apparently, with such a review, even I, whose background in those subjects spans more than 40 years in the past, would readily understand the book.

Introduction

It's impossible to imagine life today without professionally trained guard, sentry, and police dogs. Dog sports like Schutzhund and Ringsport also champion reliable protection work, and there are many privately owned companion dogs that work as protection dogs.

The successful training of a reliable protection dog doesn't start, as is often thought, with bite work, but rather with a good education and obedience exercises. People who don't agree and who don't have a good relationship with their dog and have not valued obedience training, sometimes start training very young dogs to do bite work and thus spoil their dogs forever. The dangers that accompany bite work are so great that we emphatically advise against starting this type of training with dogs younger than 12 months. If a dog starts bite work at too young an age, he will invariably be a frightened dog or a totally aggressive dog that is impossible to control. Therefore, bite training should begin only when the dog is physically and mentally ready for it. As mentioned, the proper age for bite work is almost never younger than 12 months and often as old as 18 months.

While you wait to implement bite work into your training schedule, thoroughly teach your dog obedience exercises until he is a year old. During this period, you can also start training him to perform the preparatory protection exercises, as mentioned in Chapter 17, "Raising for Protection."

Every dog that is safe in and suitable to our communities--definitely including reliable protection dogs--must have mastered certain basic skills. For instance, dogs must: not pull the leash; on command: sit, lie down, stand, stay, and come; and display normal behavior with humans and other animals. To help you ensure your protection dog has these basic skills, we clearly describe how to train for them in the Obedience section of this book, before we write comprehensively about protection training. As in the real world, obedience comes before protection.

We have also presented the PH-1 test of the Royal Dutch Police Dog Association (KNPV) because it is intended to assess dogs trained not only for the police service and police tasks but also for their potential to be reliable protection dogs. In Chapter 16, "Decoy and Dog," we discuss, among other things, the behavior of the decoy and that of the dog, as well as the important warm-up and cool-down exercises that don't take much time but prevent injuries.

However, before you get into the details associated with training, start at the beginning of this book with Chapter 1, "Conditions for Success," and Chapter 2, "Breeds for Protection Work," in which you will find a discussion about the most likely breeds to train for protection work based on our comprehensive training experiences with those breeds.

This is one of the best books written on protection training

This is one of the best books written on protection training. It is very well written in simple, easy to understand language and covers such subjects as which breeds are suitable for protection work, how to select a dog for protection work, the obedience exercises needed for protection work, as well as training methods for protection work. It's a must read for anyone in protection work ( novice or veteran ) or contemplating going into protection work. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Few are likely to quibble that Thou shalt not illegally download copyrighted media files doesn't have quite the solemnity or clarity of Thou shalt not steal. Howard and Korver invite readers into ethics' gray areas and guide them in developing a personal ethical code hardy enough for the most ambiguous situations. The book presents a four-part plan to become aware of ethical temptation and compromise, the fundamentals of ethical logic and using ethics as an avenue to a happier life. The authors successfully tease out the prudential, legal and ethical dimensions of actions—however, readers might become frustrated with the lack of conclusive instructions. Furthermore, while the putative goal of the book is to assist readers in constructing their personal code, the sample models presented are so rife with inconsistencies that the book contributes to more ethical confusion than clarity. While the very nature of ethics acknowledges the varying shades of gray, a bit more black and white when it comes to ethical guidance might lead to a more satisfying read. (June)

Muddled on ethical thinking, but may still be useful for some on practical level

This is essentially a self-help book for clarifying ethical thought and improving ethical behavior. It's different from other such books in applying to ethics what the authors call "decision analysis," an approach to decision making the authors have previously applied in business and other practical fields. The focus is personal everyday ethics concerning things like white lies and cheating rather than "big" but less common issues like abortion and capital punishment. (If you're looking for a book to help with big issues like that, this isn't the book for you.)

The authors are experienced and well credentialed in business and higher education. The material is of the kind you might hear at a business workshop, not academic but pitched for astute readers, with particular attention to how the principles apply in business. At 154 pages plus some appendices, there's enough material for a series of workshops, though many of the basic ideas are repeated several times in somewhat different ways and contexts.

The basic plan of the book is to make us more aware of common ethical challenges and useful distinctions, to teach skills for dealing with them, and to apply the skills. There are step-by-step instructions for constructing a personal ethical code, examples of personal codes written by ordinary people, and suggestions for practical use.

A common problem with self-help books is that they overreach, often by trying to fit every person and problem into a simple solution or system. That's an issue here. The authors make some effort not to impose their view of ethics. They seek to help the reader discover and improve her own ethical views, in accord with her own "inner voice." But the system and advice they prescribe for doing this is still basically the same for all, and it's much better suited to some views than others. I'll explain more below.

Another limitation on the usefulness of the book is that, despite the emphasis on clear thinking, some of the basic ideas and supporting points don't seem clear or well reasoned.

It also seems to me that ease of decision making is sometimes favored over facing difficult ethical problems.

Here are some more details about the issues I mentioned, so you can better draw your own conclusions.

The ethical stance

The authors' preference is for something akin to Kantian morality (so-called after 18th-century philosopher Immanuel Kant). This includes what they call action-based ethics, according to which an act is right or wrong depending the nature of the act, not its expected consequences. That lends itself to a strict rules-based approach, which they also favor. Among their key tests for rules is a version of Kant's famous Categorical Imperative, simplified by the authors to "Would I want everyone to follow this rule?"

Most of us tend to mix (not always consistently) action-based thinking and consequence-based thinking. Some, such as utilitarians, believe only the consequences matter. The authors clearly disagree with consequence-based ethics, but they try to accommodate it, maybe because so many people's inner voices insist consequences matter. The authors frequently appeal to the consequences to imply the acts in examples are right or wrong (seemingly without noticing that this is a consequence-based approach). However, the difference in how action- and consequence-based ethics determine right and wrong is so fundamental that the authors sometimes can't give the same advice for both. Though book is written mainly with the authors' quasi-Kantian views in mind, occasionally some further or altogether different (and sometimes seemingly grudging) advice is given in regard to consequence-based ethics.

Unfortunately, the authors give a number of mistaken or confused arguments relating to consequence-based ethics, such as that it implies that self-interest can justify ethical compromise (108). They seem unaware of the ways a common type of consequence-based ethics called "rule utilitarianism" addresses many of their concerns. Their main objection to consequence-based ethics appears to be that it's messy and makes it easier to make excuses, but even if that's true (and some would dispute it) that wouldn't imply it's the wrong approach unless we assume the reality of ethics isn't messy. (More on that below.)

Some other ways of looking at ethics also get attention, in some way or other. Religion is treated as an important source for moral beliefs that can be sifted and refined by use of the tools in the book. Relationships are treated as one of the most important points of ethics.

There are other approaches to ethics that the authors don't consider so much. If you think of ethics mainly in terms of virtues, paradigms of good behavior, objective self-realization, or other less common views, you'll find little of that acknowledged.

Easy decisions vs messy reality?

This book seems to place a higher value on drawing clean, bright lines and being practical than on reflecting actual ethical complexity and difficulty. Maybe this is natural for authors who focus on efficient decision making. They object to consequence-based ethics in part because, as they see it, it doesn't lend itself to definite rules and can thus hinder their favored decision process.

They take a similar position in regard to deciding what counts as ethical. There is a distinction commonly made between what the authors call positive and negative ethics, or between "thou shalts" and "thou shalt nots." Negative requirements like "don't steal" are often easier to pin down and live by than positive ones like "help those in need." Because positive ethical rules can be so difficult to work with, the authors suggest we simply reclassify difficult ones as nonethical "concerns" or "aspirations," to get them out of the way, as it were.

For example, they write, "Instead of thinking we have a positive ethic to feed the hungry, we might think, 'I have a positive concern for feeding the hungry'. We reclassify an ethic as a concern and can then calibrate our charity to match our energy and resources--without jeopardizing our commitment to skillful ethical thinking." (40, cp 56, 79-80) As they see it, there is nothing unethical about failing to achieve concerns or aspirations. (Others, including Kant, have tried to distinguish strict duties from what might be called virtuous behavior, but such a division remains problematic and controversial, and doesn't imply that virtuous behavior isn't part of ethics.)

We get to choose which positive requirements are to be regarded as ethical. "These positive ethics can be thought of as a set of behaviors filling a periodic table of ethical elements. Our job is to decide which elements to call our own." (54)

For the authors this is ultimately a matter for our "inner voice" to determine. That opens yet another issue, which the authors don't discuss, about whether ethics should be treated as ultimately subjective in the sense that what you think is right is right for you. They define "ethics" in terms of what we *believe* is right or wrong (8), and sometimes write as though the point is to avoid future remorse from the inner voice rather than to achieve something more objective (e.g. 73). A subjective approach makes it easier to prune our ethics to a size we're comfortable with.

Now, it might not be a bad thing, practically speaking, to look for ways to make ethics easier. As the authors see it, "Committing to a code we can keep is far better than committing to one that stretches us too far, forcing us to break our own rules." (80) But the most difficult and messy ethical obligations may also be among the most important. The fact that they're hard to spell out or live by doesn't imply they aren't ethical or are less than central to our ethical lives. The book invites us in various ways to put them to the side, in favor of neater duties.

A couple other things

There are numerous other points where I thought the logic was less than clear. Here are a couple examples.

The authors limit (without argument) the ethical to what affects others, but they seem to decide arbitrarily what does affect others and what counts as ethical. They don't count environmental issues or historical preservation (8-9), both of which seem to me to affect others. Whether we should work less so we can be at home with the kids they consider merely a prudential matter (that is, a matter of self-interest) and not a matter of ethics "because we are trading off pluses and minuses, not separating right from wrong." (36) I was unable to see how weighing pluses and minuses implies a focus on self-interest rather than right and wrong. Much of their talk about prudence vs. ethics didn't make sense to me.

The examples used to illustrate points are of variable aptness. They often don't definitely exemplify the point but require the authors to speculate. In some cases the authors seem to abuse examples, as with Kurt Gerstein, an enigmatic figure in the history of resistance to the Nazi Holocaust whom the authors return to several times. They suppose things about his story that are unknown, and treat him as guilty of ethical mistakes without sufficient evidence or argument. I felt their treatment was careless and unfair. Guilt is merely assumed in some other cases too.

Worth trying?

All in all, despite the issues outlined above, this book may still be helpful to some. As a book about clear ethical thinking, I can't give it a passing grade. But even with the risk of some fuzzy thinking and potential wrong turns, it still might improve at least some aspects of your ethical life to try some of the methods the authors suggest. The book will be more appealing and less frustrating if you happen to share the basic moral views of the authors.

Solid Ethical Guidance, But Are Ethics The Right Question?

Ethics For The Real World was a challenging book for me. Howard and Korver have written a very well organized book that lays out a highly systematic approach to ethical decision making. They do a great job of explaining the problem that they are trying to address: unskilled ethical thinking and decision making. Further, they outline a highly logical bottom up, step by step approach on how one can make improvement in recognizing compromises and sorting out the legal and prudential issues that obscure ethical decision making. Their writing style is not the most engaging, but it is on par with what you would find in most philosophically based books.

So what's the problem? In their guidance of establishing one's own personal code of ethics, the authors encourage the ultimate in relativism. They encourage the reader (as well as their students) to take a cafeteria approach to building their code of ethics by choosing what they will accept and reject whatever they choose from what they have learned from religion, family, society, etc. While the authors draw a distinction between morals and ethics, this seems like cheating to me. Readers who believe that right and wrong are objectively defined apart from any individual will also find this book to be challenging. My suggestion to such readers is to use your moral code as your ethical code and apply the "action based" rather than "consequence based" approach to ethics. You will still have to sift through a lot of relativism so you will have to decide if it is worth it or not. If you tend to take a more post-modern approach, you will find no such dilemma.

Well Organzied but not Well Thought Out

The authors have attempted to provide a practical guide to making ethical decisions in the business world but ultimately vary between both the theoretical and practical without succeeding in either. They sometimes use terminology in a confusing and nonstandard manner and their scenarios sometimes seem ad hoc. Perhaps a more telling criticism though is their process for reaching ethical conclusions gives the appearance of having a solid foundation but only appears so after a cafeteria menu of decisions have been made. That is, you have a foundation once you choose your own ethics. If the ethical relativism in business led to our problems in the first place, this merely moves the problem back a step and gives the illusion of a foundation when none is really present.
