Nice detailed overview of project management

I got this book a couple of days ago, since I'm getting ready for the PMP exam. Even though the book isn't geared toward the exam specifically, I have been advised by senior colleagues that I should read as many books about project management as possible. At first I wasn't convinced but after reading this book I see what they mean. Overall, I found this book very well organized and I was happy to see how comprehensive it is. I feel it helped make me more aware of the role of a manager, and helped me focus my attention on a set of skills that I need to hone.

The first two chapters offer a somewhat typical introduction to projects and project management, and the good stuff really starts in Chapter 3 ("Project Initiation"). (By the way, the book is very very comprehensive, and covers every single step of the process of managing and creating a project.) One thing I like about the book are the ongoing examples used throughout the book. They are not cheesy and they are not theoretical project ideas. Instead I feel the ideas are real and relevant (e.g. constructing a community park). That's actually not very surprising, given the author's experience in project management, and I'm sure he's drawing on some real-life projects when he wrote this book.

Chapters 4 and 5 focus on planning. I should point out that one thing I liked about this book is how much focus it placed on the planning phase. The level of detail is great (team formation, feasibility, risk analysis, etc) and it is clearly communicated that a well-planned project is a project with a high chance of success. This ensures one will avoid unnecessary ad hoc solutions while the project is being executed.

That said, there is also a lot to be learned about project execution and finalization, and the book covers those aspects as well, devoting an entire chapter to each of them. Of course, a project manager should be able to adapt to new circumstances as they arise (even the most well-planned projects faces unanticipated challenges), and the "Execution Board" concept helps ensure problems are dealt with properly and efficiently, and by the team member most likely to succeed at doing so.

The book ends with what I consider to be two nice bonuses: a set of examples, and a published article that the author wrote and published by the Project Management Institute (that's the PMI of course, which you must have heard about if you ever looked into project management certification). The examples continued the nice writing style from the rest of the book, and illustrate the concepts using two project ideas: building a website, and planning a family trip. I found the first example more relevant and useful, but maybe that's because of the technical nature of my current job.

As for the article included in the book (titled "The Project Simulation Game: Simplifying Project Management through Concrete Learning"), it describes a training method to enhance project managers' knowledge of the techniques of project management. It deals with project management as a science and incorporates simulating real-life projects. Even though the audience seems to be people who are in more senior management positions, I still found it useful and an interesting read. Just like the rest of the book!

About the Author
JOHN CAGE (1912–1992) was an American composer whose inventive compositions and unorthodox ideas profoundly influenced twentieth-century music. He was an early proponent of aleatoric music (music where some elements are left to chance), used instruments in nonstandard ways, and was an electronic music pioneer. LAURA KUHN is the John Cage Professor of Performance Art at Bard College and director of the John Cage Trust.

Cage's Autobiography

This selection from the voluminous correspondence of John Cage essentially acts as his autobiography. Especially when one considers that there is a great deal of personal and professional information about Cage that has never been known before. Some of these revelations were not surprising (that Cage was deeply in love with David Tudor) while others were (that he studied the orchestral horn for a short time). It was also very satisfying to read that Cage was no fool in money matters, and handled his finances are carefully as he could, asking for help from his benefactors only when it was absolutely needed. And it is no surprise that he was a tireless worker; touring, rehearsing, performing without letup, to the end of his life. Even with all his commitments he still managed to engage with making prints and watercolors when he was well into his 70's. In short, this superb volume of letters is a real inspiration and stimulus to any artist or musician who tends to despair of "making it". Cage certainly "made it" (although he often regretted the intrusions into his life caused by fame) largely through dedication and endless hard work. The footnotes provided by editor Kuhn provide much-needed context and put much of these letters in perspective. This book is a must-have for any bookshelf devoted to 20th-century music and art, and to one devoted to Cage himself. As a personal note, I would like to mention that I myself was the recipient of a letter from Cage. I wrote to him in 1971 asking for an autograph as a 17th birthday present, and he generously responded with a brief note: "Thank you for your letter. And best wishes to you before, during, and after your birthday." I mention this to point out the exceeding politeness and consideration Cage showed to everyone who crossed his path, even when burdened with endless professional and personal commitments.

Organic Functionalism

Weston appears to do a very fine job presenting us with the various perspectives of the Villa -- the large living room, entryways, linear wood use, and of course the extraordinary pool and sauna. The integration of text with pictures makes the book accessible to students just beginning to embark on a study of this great Finnish architect.

Villa Mairea is a very specific home building in Finland. It could be described as an outstanding but descent statue of the golden National Romantic Era, when Alvar Aalto (much alike Frank Lloyd, e.g. in his Fallingwaterhouse) was relatively free hands to plan a house in the "best spirit" of the time.

The house was possessed and occupied by the descendants of the relatively large Ahlstr�m family, which is famous for various industrial activities in Finland. Few people (150 000?) had opportunity to visit the place when it was open for publicity from time to time several years ago, but as a surrogate for such an experience this books gives an excellent overview. The pictures and drawings of the home and its environment are very clear and professionally prepared, and what is most important, the proportionally short introduction to the cultural milieu or atmosphere of the time is covering enough for readers, who have been interested in architecture, but have not yet acknowledged the greatness of Alvar Aalto.

I am so blessed to have finally been exposed to these wonderful spiritual revelations at such an advanced age

I've been immersed in Andrew Farley's various writings on a daily basis for at least the past 18 months. His grace-focused and scripturally validated teachings never fail to inspire and reassure me; and Relaxing with God is no exception. I am so blessed to have finally been exposed to these wonderful spiritual revelations at such an advanced age. Indeed, I have purchased copies of each of his books for distribution to family and friends-----his publications are just too spiritually "rich" to keep to myself. The teaching of God's grace at its very best. Thanks Andrew.

This book describes perfectly my own journey with Christ

This book is an excellent summary of where I've been in my own 40 year walk that started at age 27. I spent early morning time in the Word and felt so close to God then went to church or men's events and came home feeling worthless, beaten, discouraged, and that God wanted nothing to do with me until I was really "sold out" to a greater degree.

Finally I began to realize what I was hearing in the evangelical denomination I am a part of (it's a really big denomination that I still love with "Southern" in the name) just wasn't the relationship with Christ I read about in the scripture. This book is a well written account of what I've come to believe over the last ten years or so. God isn't at all irritated with me because I'm human.

I feel so free and joyous in my relationship with Christ now that I want to share that with everyone. I've been a deacon in my denomination for about 30 years. I put a lot of men in shackles who came to me for council many years ago. God forgive me. I am ordering copies of this book to help some of them understand where my walk has brought me.

Very good summary of the so called hyper-grace teachings. There might be some debatable views in this book, but overall it is a really god job. As usual Dr Farley uses examples from everyday life to make his point and support scriptural truths. This book is completly based on the gospel that is God's power that delivers. If you are inclining to the gospel of the grace of Jesus Christ this book will just strengthen you. If you are unsure of what the truth is, this book serves with clear evidence to the gospel of grace, just put those debatable things on a shelf and keep reading on. Maybe later you can come back to those and think about it.
