Pioneering Composition Text

I've been teaching writing to college freshmen and secondary students for years. Understanding Rhetoric: A Graphic Guide to Writing gets the Pioneer Award for the first text to use a graphic visual format to reinforce how to write well. The authors and artists put to work their own collaborative processes to create a text that will both educate and entertain young readers. The expert comic visuals support the topics in ways that will really appeal to visual learners. I can still recall the fussy face and piqued posture of Plato as he laments the ill effects that he believes writing will have on thinking and rhetoric. Students will gain a clear understanding of rhetoric, the writing process, and how to persuade an audience through essay writing. The book is a solid classroom text that offers ancillaries, creative assignments, and online helps for both students and instructors. Sure hope the authors will post a "Take a Look Inside" as that option will really attract sales.

Selling the book to some might be tricky though. I will be using the text with a group of seniors in a conservative Christian school setting. In a chapter or two, the authors made the choice to use topics of same gender marriage and research on the gay gene. When covering legitimate research, a fake website called "Savior Science" is used as an example of what is not a reliable source. Jonathan's sexual preference and human rights work are made clear at certain points in the text. I could wish that these weren't there, but I think discussing author choices is important to understanding the effect of the written word. Dialogue will ensue for sure and that's a good thing, especially for young Christians who are learning how to read, think, write and speak sensitively. A gay rights agenda doesn't pervade the text, but certain folks might take offense. I'm going for it because writing in and for the real world is the exciting work of authors,especially Christian ones.

Congratulations to the artists and authors on a groundbreaking book! I hope it wins some awards.

A textbook in the form of a comic book. Some may call it crazy, some may say that it's counter intuitive to learning, but I've never seen an entire class actually do the required reading for a class until now. Very good book, and it shipped rapidly, as well.

This is a relatively short book for a church history, containing seven chapters, of about 20 pages each, on what Kaatz believes to be key developments in the early church that are generally "under reported". It is not designed to be a comprehensive church history by any means.

The topics covered are: Chapter One: Paul and the Early Christians; Chapter Two: The Early Defenders of the Faith; Chapter Three: Marcion: A New Interpretation; Chapter Four: The Manichaeans; Chapter Five: The Christianizing of the Empire; Chapter Six: Arianism; Chapter Seven: The Power of the Bishops.

Kaatz writes with an awareness of critical issues such as the authenticity of the Pauline letters but does not make a big deal of such - though he states that the apostle Luke was the author of Luke (and Acts) without noting widespread scholarly dissent about this, so he is not overly critical focused in his scholarship, trying to answer every possible objection.

I enjoyed reading his book and think that it is a decent introduction to some interesting topics in church history, however this book is marred by sloppy editing, just too many instances of verbal nonsense or the wrong word - relying on spell check I assume.

Still if one can find it at the library, I definitely recommend reading it as it is not too scholarly in tone and the last two chapters are really interesting especially in light of continuing United States of America and Canadian government subsidies to religious organizations in the form of tax write-offs and exemptions.

I should add that there are numerous occasions where he makes rather debateable statements. One example is his claim (pages 27-28) that Gentile Christians did not mix Jewish and Christian traditions, while many Jewish Christians did without providing the evidence for such. Strangely, he even expects the Jewish communities to have repudiated Judaism rather than Pharisaic interpretations, perhaps, of such. I would also counter argue that Jewish festivals might be something that Gentiles could embrace without too much trouble as opposed to circumcision which their non-Christian Gentile neighbours would notice at the baths and gymnasia - their self mutilation would become evident in Greco-Roman culture. Indeed, if God fearers, that is Gentiles attending synagogue and community functions, had been a prime target of the early Christian mission while trying to win the Jews over, then I would expect God fearers to have participated in synagogue worship, study, meals, and community festivals and events prior to Christian conversion, even if they did not keep strict Jewish dietary laws and practice circumcision. Paul, though a missionary to the Gentiles had the habit of going first to the synagogue when he came to a new city, suggesting that he focused on converting the Gentiles that hung around the Jewish community as much as anyone else. Hence, I am not convinced that former Gentiles, now Christians, would have been so unattached to things Jewish. So to my mind some of his claims are questionable as in this example.

Excellent detailed guide to the art

In a world where new technology and software constantly dazzle, John Purcell has given us a text that focuses on art and craft. I found his detailed discussion and diagrams to be extremely helpful--he significantly raised the level of the quality of my current indie film project. I found his discussion on the use of room tone and transitions alone to make this book a winner. My editing experience extends back to the days of tape and razor blades. NLE provides both challenges and opportunities for enhanced creativity and audience engagement. This book deals with both in an art-and-craft context independent of the hardware/software platform in use. Highly recommended for anyone looking to produce high quality finished dialog tracks (or prepare them for a final mix), from indie home studio to a sophisticated Hollywood working environment.

A Thrill a Minute

This is my first Gregg Olsen book and I soooo want to read more!

So, Olsen does a little 'ripped from the headlines' storytelling as readers will recognize the real life story of a jail employee who facilitates an escape after starting an intimate relationship with an inmate. Olsen changes things up as both our jail employee and our inmate are female, but serial killer Brenda Nevins is scarier than any male killer out there. She's cold blooded, sadistic, and she can charm anyone - male or female - into doing her bidding.

A secondary story line regards a cold case that centers on a missing girl and a reality show psychic who may be more than she seems.

While I enjoyed both story lines, I enjoyed the Serial Killer story line more and was glad when eventually the plot and subplot meet.

The book is a thrill ride from page one. It's action packed and I tore through it. Definitely your perfect vacation read!

Several things going on and all of them interesting.

Now That She’s Gone grabs you from the very beginning and never lets you go right to the end. The story opens with Janie Thomas sitting in an office. She is troubled and agitated. When another woman enters, they have an exchange and end up hugging. The problem is that the office in a women’s prison, Janie is the warden and the woman hugging her is Brenda Nevins, a serial killer.

From that beginning we are taken on a ride as detective Kendall Stark and forensic pathologist Birdy Waterman search to find Brenda Nevins and Janie Thomas. The character of Brenda Nevins is chillingly developed. She is brutal, smart and charming - a deadly combination for a serial killer.

Brenda Nevins is not all Kendall Stark has to worry about. There is TV psychic, Pandora who is coming to town to work on an unsolved case. Kendall is told to work with her as the current liaison for the case. Kendall is not impressed, but when Pandora makes a dramatic proclamation at the taping, Kendall is forced to look into it.

Several things going on at once in this book and all of them interesting. I couldn’t put it down.

Female Serial Killer on the Loose

Brenda Nevins female serial killer has escaped by seducing the female warden of her prison. Janie Thomas had no idea she was just being used until they were out and she began her time as a tortured plaything for Brenda. Kendall Stark our detective is finding it impossible to deal with a young upstart who wants her to go on TV. Then a reality show comes to town to cover a missing teenager from years before. The star of the show is suppose to have extraordinary powers to discern who did the deed. Needless to say several characters don't make it alive to the end and several other lives are destroyed in the process. Birdie Waterman is a minor character in this novel but an important one. If you have not read any of Glen Olson this is a good story. Not one of the best but a page turner all the same.

About the Author

Harry R. Moody is a graduate of Yale University and received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Columbia University. He has taught philosophy at Columbia University, Hunter College, New York University, and the University of California at Santa Cruz.� He recently retired as Vice President and Director of Academic Affairs for AARP in Washington, DC.� He is currently Visiting Professor at Tohoku University in Japan, and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Fielding Graduate University.� Dr. Moody previously served as Executive Director of the Brookdale Center on Aging at Hunter College and Chairman of the Board of Elderhostel (now Road Scholar). Moody is the author of over 100 scholarly articles, as well as a number of books including: Abundance of Life: Human Development Policies for an Aging Society (Columbia University Press, 1988) and Ethics in an Aging Society (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1992). His most recent book, The Five Stages of the Soul, was published by Doubleday Anchor Books and has been translated into seven languages worldwide.� He is the editor of a newsletter, "Human Values in Aging," reaching 10,000 subscribers each month. In 2011 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society on Aging and in 2008 he was named by Utne Reader Magazine as one of� “50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World.”

Jennifer R. Sasser is Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Human Sciences at Marylhurst University in Portland, Oregon, where she coordinates the gerontology program. She joined the Marylhurst faculty in 1997 and since that time has been involved in the design and implementation of many on-campus and Web-based courses and programs for adult learners, including the graduate and undergraduate certificate programs in gerontology. While conducting her doctoral work at Oregon State University, she was a graduate teaching and research fellow, as well as the first recipient of the AARP/Andrus Foundation Graduate Fellowship in Gerontology. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Sasser has studied and written about creativity in later life; older women’s embodiment; critical gerontological theory; and transformational adult learning practices. She served on the Oregon Gerontological Association Board of Directors starting in 2005 and was President of the Board for three years. In 2012, she received a Distinguished Teacher award from the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.

Good choice for anyone intereted in learning about aging including end of life choices and controversies

Really nice book. Used for my lifespan development class on aging and found it to be very well written and informative. The controversies were especially interesting.

it made it very boring and annoying to read

I'm a caregiver and this book is too philosophical to be practical, thus, it made it very boring and annoying to read.
I'm sure there's great information in it, but I didn't have the patience for it.

Great read if you're considering going into long-term care management

Great read if you're considering going into long-term care management. Parts of the book are a little dry, but it really made me think more than most college classes I've taken.
