About the Author

John P. Forsyth, PhD, is an internationally renowned author and speaker in the fields of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness practices, and self-development and growth. For over twenty years, his writings, teachings, and research have focused on developing ACT and mindfulness practices to alleviate human suffering, awaken the human spirit, and nurture psychological health and vitality. Buy This Book and Learn A New Way of Living With Your Thoughts and Emotions !

An excellent workbook, revised now with additional exercises, new meditations (downloads), and new material on working with past traumas and memories, etc. With ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or Training), you don't just "learn about the ideas," -- you DO things to feel and live your way into a new experience. It's like the difference between reading about how to go hiking, and being on the hike. Being on the hike is a real experience, allowing me to look at my own life differently, and reflect, and grow. That's how ACT works.

John Forsyth and Georg Eifert have provided a thorough, step-wise workbook with lots of experiential exercises so you can "go on your hikes" by yourself, using the book as your guide, or you can utilize a counselor or therapist as your guide and use the book as a source of information and exercises.

This is an extremely helpful book, and I read it as both a therapist and an individual who is "swimming in the same soup" as everyone else on this planet. We all have to balance mind and body, and the mind tends to grow over-large and run the show if we don't maintain perspective. I love my mind for all it provides, but sometimes I just have to bring it along with me as I would a young child, since it also provides a lot of "false alarms." After all, that's what it was put there for, to keep us out of trouble. If this sounds crazy, do the workbook and you'll understand better.

Not only is this workbook excellent for anxiety, panic disorders, and related conditions, it is also an excellent and thorough approach to learning ACT itself. You can also take the skills you learn with this workbook and apply them to relationships, anger problems, alcohol and drug abuse, etc. This workbook teaches us to develop a new relationship with our internal experiences, including thinking, emotions, and body sensations.

I recommend this book frequently to friends as well as clients, and I find ACT very useful in helping people get back to purposeful living while accepting their thoughts and emotions. What used to be perceived as "my problems" can be perceived as "my thoughts" and "my emotions" instead of reasons or causes for my behavior, or as restrictions from living life.

For less than the cost of a single therapy session you can learn something here that may serve you well for a lifetime.

One of the best guides I have found regarding how to live with OCD in my thirty years of living with this illness.

I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to live with chronic anxiety. For years I had tried to manage or reduce my anxiety by doing this or that technique. I worked with many therapists whose work were driven by different psychological philosophies, but were supported the same underlying principal- to get well I must reduce or eliminate my anxiety. Dr. Forsyth's book takes a different approach, one which has made a tremendous difference in my life and in the lives of those around me. The basic message as I see it is, focus less on trying to control the thoughts, feelings, and sensations related to anxiety, which after all is out of our hands, and more on the actions necessary to live the lives that we care about. He provides easy to follow exercises to help us do just this. I have found it invaluable. While I sometimes still live with high levels of anxiety, I no longer deal with the debilitating depression that would result from me giving in to my worries and fears. This book does not focus on eliminating anxiety from your mind and body, but will teach you how to give up a fight that you can't win and use that energy to live a life that you really care about.

Much More Than a Workbook, This is a Kind & Compassionate Guide to Life!!!

I recently had the privilege of interviewing John P. Forsyth, PhD on our Inspire Nation Show for this new addition of his workbook. I must say I was more than pleasantly surprised. This isn't simply a beautifully crafted gudebook for ACT or anxieties, worries, fears and phobias, but a true guidebook for life! It's a plug and play guide to help us through all of life's difficulties, and to help us live from a more heart-centered place of kindness and compassion for all, beginning first and foremost with ourselves.

If you're willing to commit to your own success, then I can't recommend this book enough. Be willing to do the homework, the exercises that come with each chapter, and there's no doubt your anxiety levels will decrease, your worries will decrease, and your ability to tackle challenges in your life will go up, WAY up. This is a handbook that helps you make your worries your friends and guides, helping you literally transform your life, and do things you once thought impossible.

Needed a quick read to round out my understanding of Hana. I wasn't expecting a whole lot when I downloaded this book. Turned out to be thorough while being fairly compact. I especially liked the links they embedded to related videos and documents.

About the Author
Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821-81) was educated in Moscow and at the School of Military Engineers in St. Petersburg, where he spent four years. In 1844 he resigned his Commission in the army to devote himself to literature. In 1846, he wrote his first novel, which won immediate critical and popular success. At the age of twenty-seven he was arrested for belonging to a socialist group and condemned to death, but at the last moment, his sentence was commuted to prison in Siberia. In 1859, he was granted full amnesty and allowed to return to St. Petersburg. In the fourteen years before his death on January 28, 1881, Dostoyevsky produced his greatest works including Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and The Possessed.

Ben Marcus is the author of The Age of Wire and String, a collection of stories, and the novel Notable American Women. Editor of The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories, he is on the faculty of Columbia University and has received a Whiting Award and a National Endowment for the Arts grant. His essays have appeared in Time, Feed, Tin House, McSweeny’s, Bomb, Grand Street, the Pushcart Prize anthology, and Conjunctions.

Andrew R. MacAndrew (1911-2001) was a professor at the University of Virginia and an acclaimed translator of Russian literature. In addition to fiction by Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Gogol, and others, he translated A Precocious Autobiography by poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko.

A Note on Translations...

I will not delve into the brilliant work of nascent existentialism that Dostoevsky's "Notes From Underground" represents as there are plenty of reviews who have already done that for me. I do want to help customers in choosing a translation out of the many that are available, as there doesn't seem to be much to guide one through them here.

Perhaps the best translation I've found to date is that by Andrew MacAndrew, available in a Signet Classics edition. MacAndrew's prose has a vigor and modern clarity that truly make this work speak to the reader - the Underground Man truly comes to life as a living, breathing character with a relevance and immediacy.

For all the praise the Pevear/Volokhonsky translations have gotten, I do not think they necessarily surpass the efforts of those who came before them in this particular instance. Although a big fan of their Tolstoy, the Dostoevsky comes off somewhat comparatively muted.

Compare MacAndrew's rendering of the opening words in which the Underground Man introduces himself:

"I'm a sick man... a mean man. There's nothing attractive about me. I think there's something wrong with my liver. But, actually, I don't know a damn thing about my sickness; I'm not even too sure what it is that's ailing me."

To Pevear/Volokhonsky's:
"I am a sick man... I am a wicked man. An unattractive man. I think my liver hurts. However, I don't know a fig about my sickness and am not sure what it is that hurts me."

Of the two, MacAndrew's Underground Man obviously speaks a more contemporary English. I am aware that this has actually been a criticism of his. In fact, many readers might actually be put off by the brusque and terse take or find it even slightly disturbing. Purists will also doubtless find much to annoy them about MacAndrew's more interpretive (as opposed to literal) approach to translation. The Pevear/Volokhonsky actually appeared in 1993, about 30 years after MacAndrew's. There's nothing particularly wrong with their version. It has a stately, nuanced charm and is apparently much truer to Dostoevsky's original in the literal sense (to the point of translating his flaws and idiosyncrasies). But personally, as a reader, I just got much more out of reading the MacAndrew translation. You immediately get a taste of the angst of this character from MacAndrew's terse, flippant diction.

Two others to take note of: The classic Constance Garrett translation can still be found in a cheap Barnes and Noble Classics edition, along with a good selection of Dostoevsky's shorter works. Garnett's haphazard, hasty, and somewhat reckless method of translation has been much criticised, as has her quaintly Victorian diction. Mirra Ginsberg's translation in the Bantam Classics series matches the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation almost word-for-word, although I find the wording where she deviates to actually be better overall.

Story and toughts of a self made social outcast.

A seemingly in-depth look into the life of a depressive recluse. The main character gives us many views on everyday people and their actions that should cause us, the reader, to evaluate our own understanding of the people who surround us. (Example: Why people will moan for days before seeing a dentist.)

The writing is absolutely brilliant. Dostoyevsky does not seem to have created this character but instead pulled him from the street. The character was not one dimensional, an attribute that I found personally refreshing . The thoughts and emotions are complex and real and were constantly understated, adding to the impression that the book was written by the character himself, who lacks writing experience needed to capture these feelings.

The main character views himself cut off and removed from society, rejected by all in nearly every way. He has become so obsessed with this notion that he has created this exact situation as a result of searching for justification of this impression. He has in fact created most of his own misery, and only continues to propagate more. Yet he seem himself as miserable and rejected and finds pride in this image. He imagines himself to be pitiful and also to be strong and fiercely independent as a result of his social isolation. He feels he poses a strength of spirit for being able to endure the loneliness and envisions himself as a martyr.

This fuels his ego and he plans heroic acts in order to show the proof of his worth or to win attention and love. He however lacks the courage to complete the monumental self serving tasks he set before himself. Through a strange twist of logic these failures are also seen as something to be admired. It only makes him more pitiful and thus a greater martyr. When these failures are personally humiliating he retreats within in himself. Hating everyone and again fortifying his independence, claiming that all who depend on others are weak. Only to re-emerge more hungry for the affections of a companion.

An emotional ebbing between pride of independence and ability to bravely endure the suffering quickly switching to the opposite pole of resenting people in general. Sustaining himself on the imagined praises or pity that he thinks would be lavished upon him if he were to be seen by others as he sees himself.

A terribly tragic tale that emphasis the importance of perspective and removing one's self from a problem in order to perhaps gain a helpful assessment of it. The ideas and emotions presented give a haunting impression. The book should be read slowly and turned over in ones mind again and again.

"Which is better - cheap happiness or exalted suffering?"

`Notes From The Underground' is a formidable work of philosophy and of psychology, not to mention its worth as a novel. In the space of around one hundred pages, Dostoyevsky manages to expound theories on reason, alienation, suffering, and human inaction. The book's importance and influence on generations of writers cannot be over-emphasised; Sartre and Camus are only two examples of people who have been directly influenced by this book.

The book is presented in two parts. Part one `Underground' is written in the form of the nameless narrator's rambling thoughts on reason and his claim that throughout history, human actions have been anything but influenced by reason. Underground Man's charge is that man values most the freedom to choose to act in opposition to reason's dictates. Dostoyevsky's critique of reason then, although it demands attention and is somewhat difficult to follow, sets the philosophical foundations for the rest of the book.

Part two `A Propos of the Wet Snow' is much easier to read, as the narrator recounts three episodes which happened when he was fifteen years younger and working as a civil servant in St. Petersburg. The first considers an incident in which an army officer insults him and goes on to detail Underground Man's subsequent internal anguish at his inability to commit an act of retribution. The second episode takes place at a farewell dinner for an acquaintance named Zverkov. The narrator is utterly disgusted with the company in which he finds himself but despite this, he is unable - even though he desires it - to make them realise this. The third episode details Underground Man's brief, painful and emotional relationship with a prostitute.

Dostoyevsky is refreshing in this book thanks not only to his incredibly powerful prose, but also for the intense but subtle way in which the stories reflect and indeed embody his philosophical theories. This dark and pessimistic portrayal of the nature of man may not sit very comfortably with many readers, however the ideas expressed in `Notes From The Underground' are as relevant and worthy of deliberation now as I am sure they were in 1864.

About the Author

When Kati Neville went back to work after the birth of her first child, she learned to put home-cooked meals on the table every night by filling her freezer with make-ahead dinners. In 2002, she created Make and Take LLC, the first meal preparation service in the Portland, Oregon, metropolitan area.



Lindsay Tkacsik has always loved cooking with a wide range of foods and flavors. She brings her enthusiasm for bold tastes to both her meal preparation business, Mealtime Solutions, and her cookbook writing. Lindsay lives with her husband and three daughters in Washington.

One of the Best!

I just got this book a few weeks ago, and I LOVE it! I live in a household of two, and am not a Costco-type shopper when it comes to meats, so everything I have made from this book, I have just halved the recipes to fit my smaller-packages-of-meat shopping patterns. No biggie. I still have three plus meals out of each type of meat I buy for the two of us.

My husband absolutely raved about the Sticky Ribs recipe...and being a die-hard foodie, he is VERY difficult to impress. He has insisted I make them again for a potluck this weekend. I won't give the recipe away, but trust me, for just four ingredients, this one can't be beat. It was worth the price of the book for this one recipe alone.

Overall, this book was a great intro for me on the pleasures of make-ahead cooking. I think I am addicted now! And the fact the recipes in this book do not contain any horrible ingredients like Velveeta cheese, canned "cream of" soups, or refrigerated biscuit dough is great, too! You can feed your family easily, healthfully, and with fewer preservatives and if you purchase this book and make some of the recipes as they are written. I highly recommend it!

Saving time and $$money$$

We are a very active family and this book has transformed my time as well as my grocery bill. It is specifically geared to shopping "warehouse style". Now I am buying in bulk every other week and prepping 14-20 entrees in two to three hours, that need a minimum amount of attention before cooking and serving. Some of our favorites are the 4B's Flank Steak, Salisbury Meatballs, Honey-Glazed Chicken Thighs and Turkish Pork Chops. My husband estimated that I have cut our food bill in half. I like that we aren't wasting food in purchases I intended to make but find I'm too busy to actually prepare. I have bought a lot of OAMC books but I dont have two whole days of uninterupted time (nor do I want to!) for prepping. Fix, Freeze, Feast makes $en$e for me! :-)

Delicious, Fast, Easy....

I bought this book to aid in dinner prep during the bewitching hour. I made 5 recipes. They go together fairly quickly and quite easily. Once they are thawed (some can be cooked from a frozen state - recipes give specific instructions for re-heating) they are simple to cook, making meal preparation a snap. My 3 kids liked the recipes, as did my husband (who is a culinary professional) and I. (We especially liked the Basil-Balsamic marinade which we used for chicken.) I have cooked in bulk for several years now, but many of the cookbooks I've used have recipes that are outdated and unhealthy. This one is different! No gloopy casseroles with canned cream soup. Instead, look for Tequila-Lime Chicken, Peanut Satay,Apple Cranberry Pork Loin, Asparagus and Potato Frittata, Vegetable Lasagna, Black Bean and Vegetable Chili, etc. They also include some classics, such as Chicken a la King, Beef Barley Soup, several recipes for ribs and steak, regular Chili, and regular Lasagna. Fish and seafood lovers won't be disappointed, as there are several preparations for this genre as well. There is something for everyone here.
The cooking instructions can be copied or printed off their website to attach right to the package before it goes into the freezer. If you've ever come across a mystery package in your freezer, you'll know this is a real plus. It also makes it easier to use these meals as gifts and "love meals" for those who are ill or going through a crisis. There is also a freezer inventory so you can keep track of what you have left in there.
I will definitely try more of the recipes. It may seem like a large output of cash in the beginnig to buy in bulk, but in the long run having meals already prepared actually saves money, as you aren't tempted to call for a pizza or do the breakfast drive-though (frozen breakfast burritos are in the freezer!). Highly recommend.

Neil was the youngest of 3 children and much younger than his siblings by about 10 years. His siblings were jealous of him and made sure he looked bad in his parents eyes. Through their misdeeds, Neil ended up being placed in diapers 24/7 even though his mother tried desperately to potty train him. But fate takes its own toll of his life and loosing his partner, Neil tries to find a new love in his life but fails.
