About the Author
Kathleen Park Talaro is a microbiologist, educator, author, and artist. She has been nurturing her love of microbiology since her youth growing up on an Idaho farm where she was first fascinated by tiny creatures she could just barely see swimming in a pond. This interest in the microbial world led to a biology major at Idaho State University, where she worked as a teaching assistant and scientific illustrator for one of her professors. This was the beginning of an avocation that she continues today―that of lending her artistic hand to interpretation of scientific concepts. She continued her education at Arizona State University, Occidental College, California Institute of Technology, and California State University. She has taught microbiology and major’s biology courses at Pasadena City College for 30 years, during which time she developed new curricula and refined laboratory experiments. She has been an author of, and contributor to, several publications of the William C. Brown Company and McGraw-Hill Publishers since the early 1980s, first illustrating and writing for laboratory manuals and later developing this textbook. She has also served as a coauthor with Kelly Cowan on the first two editions of Microbiology: A Systems Approach. Kathy continues to make microbiology a major focus of her life and is passionate about conveying the significance and practical knowledge of the subject to students, colleagues, family, friends, and practically anyone who shows interest. In addition to her writing and illustration, she keeps current attending conferences and participating in the American Society for Microbiology and its undergraduate educational programs. She is gratified by the many supportive notes and letters she has received over the years from devotees of microbiology and users of her book. She lives in Altadena, California, with husband Dave Bedrosian, and son David. Whenever she can, she visits her family in Idaho. In her spare time, she enjoys photography, reading true crime books, music, crossword puzzles, and playing with her rescued kitties.

Barry Chess has been teaching microbiology at Pasadena City College for over 15 years. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from California State University, Los Angeles, and did several years of postgraduate work at the University of California, Irvine, where his research focused on the expression of eukaryotic genes involved in the development of muscle and bone. At Pasadena City College, Barry developed a new course in human genetics and helped to institute a biotechnology program. He regularly teaches courses in microbiology, general biology, and genetics, and works with students completing independent research projects in biology and microbiology. Over the past several years, Barry’s interests have begun to focus on innovative methods of teaching that lead to greater student understanding. He has written cases for the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science and presented talks at national meetings on the use of case studies in the classroom. In 2009, his laboratory manual, Laboratory Applications in Microbiology: A Case Study Approach, was published. He is thrilled and feels very fortunate to be collaborating with Kathy Talaro, with whom he has worked in the classroom for more than a decade, on this ninth edition. Barry is a member of the American Society for Microbiology and regularly attends meetings in his fields of interest, both to keep current of changes in the discipline and to exchange teaching and learning strategies with others in the field.

the book was wrapped in shrink-wrap. interestingly enough, ...

the book was wrapped in shrink-wrap. interestingly enough, there were some pages with damage, but not enough to return the book and then fall behind on the material for my class, daily quizzes and all. this international version had the same info as the u.s. version. the one thing the professor mentioned was that the authors had provided some misinformation for some of the later sections in the book. so she created her own material for the class to remedy that. other than that, the book did the job for my microbiology class.

The central theme here is the concept of personal identity, within which Ricoeur examines three major issues: the idea of self, of identity or sameness, and of relation to that which is not self. His intention is no less than a hermeneutics of the self, and toward this end he accomplishes much. This is not reading for the philosophical novice, but those familiar with Ricoeur's writings, or those who have a thorough understanding of the concepts employed here, will find this a rich and rewarding book. Based on Ricoeur's 1986 Gifford Lectures, this is recommended for academic libraries with comprehensive programs in philosophy.

THE SELF'S MULTI-LAYERED IDENTITY

“SELFHOOD” has a multi-layered identity consisting of: “trait-sign-model”; motivational-base-of-attestation”; “disposition”; “phronetic-stance-of-loyalty”; & “universal-narrative-work-space”. All of these layers are discussed in detail by Ricoeur; and often, with corresponding Greek concepts.

This “multi-layered-self” has as its task: the “emplotment-of-praxis-positing”. Every aspect of this “intentionality” also gets fully addressed by Ricoeur. It has its own series of: “narrative-reference”; “evaluating-historical-possibilities”; “evaluation-of-attestation”; “dianoia-of-disposition”; & then “configured-emplotment”

This “multi-layered-emplotment” has an internal inertia of “REFLEX”. It constitutes a “folding-back” upon the “multi-layered-self” with a “multi-layered-attribution”; which could be any of the following: esteem; disteem; contingency-qualifications; & “competing-posited-projects”

In other words, this undertaking was “massive”. So do not expect easy reading or easy appropriation of his ideas. Instead, expect engagement with the text, a little additional vocabulary work; and then, ultimately; a feeling of “accomplishment”, for having gone down this road with Ricoeur. Dig in and enjoy the rewarding struggle. 5 stars for this profound thinker.

Who Am I as Another? A self.

Without a doubt, Paul Ricoeur's "Oneself as Another" is dense and indicative of Ricoeur's expansive familiarity with myriad philosophical trajectories and traditions, from Ordinary Language Philosophy to Phenomenology to Deconstructionism, to name a few. It is this philosophical fluency, which allows Ricoeur to articulate an extensive philosophy of the self, an inquiry into the nature of the identity of the human person. Given the sections to which my inquiry is primarily confined (Studies 5-7), it goes without saying that such a review as my own can hardly do justice to this particular other, who is Ricoeur, or to the extent of his philosophy of self. I will, however, attempt to draw out what I view as essential to these sections, which necessarily presuppose that which leads up to the current issues and anticipates future ones.

The project that Ricoeur engages in is an arduous one, though it is taken for granted in everyday language. The "I" of the person in common parlance asserts itself as one who is--an ontological and unambiguous reality as real and as given as the air that "I" breaths. Ricoeur's desire is to transcend the hegemony of "I," however, and to articulate a philosophy of self where the "I" is neither the first principle, but nor is it simply another "separate further fact." In other words, Ricoeur seeks to develop a conceptualization of selfhood that is neither the conventional exalted ego identified by Descartes, nor one which is the utterly humiliated and reduced self of deconstructionist philosophy. A self conceived in the former terms exhibits god-like status and, without the support of a trusting God to ensure one is not being deceived, that god-like status (of being an ontological reality) is ultimately all that can be conceived of as certain and a solipsistic attitude of suspicion is difficult if not impossible to avoid for all that is deemed other. A self understood in terms of the latter deconstructionist thought echoes the Nietzschean assertion regarding perspectivalism where no ontological realities are to be found. Instead, only a fabricated and utterly contingent person (if it can be called such) is present, and who really amounts to not much more than a grammatical convenience and semantic fluke. In either case meaning and value meet either a nihilistic fate or a narcissistic existence. Meaning and value, perhaps, can be construed here in terms of Ricoeur's project of hermeneutical and phenomenological descriptions of oneself as another, respectively. With regard to the two fates, I understand the latter in terms of the essential turn to the subject where the self becomes first principle, the primary datum by which and through which all other reality is "given" meaning, and the former as the deconstructionist paring away at the self until nothing remains but a series of chance, albeit intrinsically neutral, events, i.e. no self as such.

Ricoeur sees in this philosophical quagmire of self a confrontation between the concept of identity as "sameness" (Latin idem) and identity as "selfhood" (Latin ipse). When approached from a foundationalist point of view, a posited ontological self threatens the possibility of diversity within and outside of that self. Any kind of change is dangerous insomuch as it threatens the sameness which constitutes that self. Ricoeur cited for example the notion of self as understood by Locke as demonstrating such a problem. For Locke, substantial identity which corresponds to the ability to identify the self-same over time, is bound up with memory, and memory becomes substantive reflection in the moment where in the end sameness prevails. Ricoeur comments that Locke's approach marks "a conceptual reversal in which the selfhood was silently substituted for sameness" (126). When approached from the point of view of deconstruction, where no substantive self is to be found (i.e. no principle of sameness which Ricoeur will refer to as permanence in time) the self is fleeting and elusive, an epiphenomenon that is traced to physical events, brute and neutral facts, which are hermeneutically vacuous. As representative of this line of thought, Ricoeur offers the example of Hume (and later Derek Parfit) whose doubt and suspicion render the verdict that the self is an illusion. Hume only finds "a diversity of experiences and no invariable expression relative to the idea of a self" when he enters "most intimately" into himself (127).

Part of the drive for this philosophy of self for Ricoeur, then, is the desire to formulate an answer to the question of selfhood that mediates between Locke's substantive sameness, which leaves no room for alterity without destroying the self that is constituted by uninterrupted continuity, and Hume's illusory self, which Hume is unable to find upon looking for it. In objection to Hume's nihilistic analysis and conclusion, Ricoeur is quick to point out that there is, indeed, "someone who claims to be unable to find anything but a datum stripped of selfhood [heat, cold, any perception in the memory]; someone who penetrates within himself, seeks and declares to have found nothing" (128). What then drives us to impose an identity on successive sense perceptions and to "assume that we possess an invariable and uninterrupted existence during the entire course of our life" to which some kind of sameness of self can be posited? (127).

This drive to impose an identity, to ask the question "Who am I?" (regardless of the answer), is the essential hinge around which Ricoeur's philosophy of self revolves because it asserts over against ontological certainty and deconstruction emptiness an agent "who" asks. Yet, this "who" who asks is always a "who" who acts; further, this self who acts is someone recognizable, reidentifiable (either by oneself or by another), and such re-cognition and re-identification only become necessary where sameness is threatened: this threat Ricoeur identifies as time. Of this Ricoeur says: "Looking back, the greatest lacuna in our earlier studies most obviously concerns the temporal dimension of the self as well as of action as such" (113). Time is an implicit dimension in action, thus identity. But what provides that essential "permanence in time" to which the self can look to as a composite whole, a singular self, and not simply a "separate further fact"? The answer to this question involves a combination of phenomenological and hermeneutical descriptions of and prescriptions for the self and the placing of selfhood in between a dialectic of idem and ipse, that is, of sameness and selfhood. This is accomplished by positing that identity is rooted in narrative. Narrative is by definition temporal. For Ricoeur, then, personal identity, the self, "can be articulated only in the temporal dimension of human existence" (113-114). Narrative becomes the mediator between description and understanding (and eventually prescription), between idem and ipse, and between the self and the other.

Ricoeur's reliance on the phenomenological tradition is evident in the very title Oneself as Another as it is throughout the work. This phrase is not simply (or only) a reference to an analogical relationship signified by "as," between oneself and other, but an indication of the project as a phenomenological endeavor from start to finish. The "I" so common in everyday language, with its conventional tie to the Cartesian tradition is bracketed in an effort to resolve paradoxes regarding identity. The self, then, is not approached as an "I," but as an experienced self--as something that constitutes substantive appearance over time.

The self as rooted in action becomes the question of "who?" acts and how actions are always interactions. The encounter time and again with such "facts" of life (i.e. actions) acquire meaning only in the context of acquired habits and acquired identifications. That is to say, our experiences are always interpreted in the context of one's previous encounters with the phenomena corresponding to the experience. This, of course, brings oneself back to the experience of that self and points to the title's deeper phenomenological presuppositions. Just as we cannot experience a "chair" as meaningful object crafted for the purpose of sitting without prior experiences with items of this type, neither can we know ourselves except through encounters with other such phenomena--a history of encounters that teach us what a self is, hence, oneself as another.

What other philosophical approaches (and theological approaches as well) have sought is substantive reference, an ontological basis for the self where the self is the starting place, the origin, the point of departure. By introducing the narrative identity (or the temporal dimension) into the constitution of the self Ricoeur has attested that the self is something which cannot be an ontological point of origin out of which everything else is known, but is rather the destination arrived at--and still only to find that the destination is not final, but is only layover. Perhaps in theological terms, the self is the "already" and the "not yet" of the person.

The difference between person and self as implied in Ricoeur's analysis is a distinction between "what" I am and "who" I am. Ricoeur's project is in the latter, but to provide an ontological basis of the self, (i.e. to avoid a deconstructionist and nihilistic spiral into nothingness), the whatness of "who I am" (idem) must remain part of this equation of identity. It is the difference between either a meon-ontological collapse into something (vis-�-vis the deconstructionist project) or an ontological collapse into solipsistic ego (via traditional Cartesian notions of self, or better expressed in Hume and Parfit). Narrative theory provides the mediation between the descriptive actions that constitute character and the intentional self-constancy that constitutes selfhood. The person is one who is dependent upon that other for a guiding hermeneutic and is fragile insofar as authentic selfhood is contingent upon keeping one's word.

Ricoeur takes up the question of self-identity in this book, and probes the relationship of sameness or personal stability to selfhood or reflexive self-narration. It extends the ideas of his earlier work, especially _Time and Narrative_. Ricoeur habitually works within the traditions of phenomenology and hermeneutics, and in this book [as in many others] is occupied in doing critique of the analytic writers on action, of Kant, and of phenomenology. He generates a stance that can uncover aporias rivaling [and as far as I know, deeper than] those found by post-structuralists, while holding that the subject is not just a discursive effect and is more profoundly ethical. His critical foci seem oddly chosen, since the more obvious scholars for critique would be Heidegger and Levinas, neither of whom is really central to his argument. Perhaps he was influenced by the fact that this book is an elaboration on the Edinburgh Lectures, which might naturally focus on analytic philosophy, and perhaps he is trying, as usual, to find grounds for mediating rival traditions and retaining what is valuable in each.

Ricoeur is worth study because of his conscientious and constructive critiques. His turns of thought are persuasive, impressive, and valuable even to readers who are not professional philosophers of any stripe [such as myself]. The book is difficult but pretty accessible.

Amazing book, if a little hard.

The book is amazing, if the bit chaotic at times. Besides covering lexical closures, lexical, dynamic and other types of scoping, it contains a solid discussion of metaprogramming in general and practical use of Lisp macros. Some of the examples used are pretty mind-bending (in a positive way). I highly recommend it for any serious Lisper.

I haven't finished it, but like another reviewer I am being inspired by this book.

In the first couple of chapters, the author shows examples of assembler, C and Lisp, mostly in preparation for introducing lexical closures.

Closures, it turns out, are generated easily in Lisp by using the construction "let over lambda".

Regarding closures, I agree with the author that most of us have been left "with the inaccurate impression that closures are only good for toy examples like counter." But in fact, "closures are the building blocks of Lisp. Environments, the functions defined inside those environments, and macros like defun that make using them convenient, are all that are needed for modelling any problem." And in fact, the author's aim is "to stop beginning Lisp programmers . . . from . . . reaching for systems like CLOS." Yes, CLOS offers certain things, but ". . . do not use [CLOS] when a lambda will suffice."

If you're like me, you find all this very refreshing and stimulating.

From pages 31-37, the author deftly shows how objects are collections of procedures and associated state, and how the entire object infrastructure is easily derived from the lexical closure, otherwise known as "let over lambda," and combinations of "let over lambda over let over lambda." The ease and power with which this is demonstrated is breath-taking.

A couple of more quotes: "Object systems are a formalisation of a subset of let and lambda combinations, sometimes with gimmicks like inheritance bolted on (footnote 10: Having macros is immeasurably more important than having inheritance.)"

And,

"Once assignable value cells and good old lambda expressions are available, object systems are, at best, occasionally useful abstractions and, at worst, special-case and redundant."

As I indicated, I have not finished the book, but the first couple of chapters have given me plenty to consider. I highly recommend this book.

A mixed bag. Contains some interesting and worthwhile ideas. Also contains an equal number of broad, unsupported claims and idiosyncratic digressions. I found it interesting as a sort of memoir of how Hoyte thinks about programming, as manifested in his affection for Lisp macros. But he occasionally falls victim to his own tunnel vision. For instance, Hoyte dismisses hygienic macro systems without providing any evidence that he appreciates why they exist. (He's also surely the world’s only Lisp programmer who considers Perl "beautiful.")

This book is HEAVILY tied to an online framework at [...], access to which is provided by a code inside the front cover. Based on a quick response from their support line, that code is good for one year of access for one person. Additional years or additional people cost $30/ea for just the code so it's currently a better deal just to buy multiple books for the first year for each person.

Essentially to make best use of this book you need individual Minecraft accounts and individual learntomod.com accounts for each person both teacher and student.

With that said, the framework they use looks really nice. It's essentially Scratch for Minecraft Mods. This would be especially good for younger programmers who may not grasp the concepts of loops and conditionals without the visual reminders languages like Scratch provide.

I REALLY wanted to like this. I was prepared to LOVE it

Man I wanted, I REALLY wanted to like this. I was prepared to LOVE it, with no effort. but, yo, the book doesn't match the website, which is slow to load and buggy as hell and not very user friendly , much less for kids that don't know what's going on. The software itself feels more like it's in beta, and only ports over to the playable server half the time, and the "live preview" is filled with these FREAKY looking monsters rather than minecraft objects. Look, nice ideas, the plug-in visual coding stuff is fantastic, but the current thing is unusable, I am super sorry to say. I hope it's still a work in progress and I come back in a year and it's suddenly awesome, because there's that potential, but this is not ready for the public.

There was a bunch of potential for greatness here; however, the book itself is just a launching pad to get involved with a website. While the site is free at first, it is necessary to pay to get all of the benefits. To top it off, the programs are buggy and hard to get to work consistently. I wouldn't purchase this again, if I had known what it would be like.

It's a wonderful book a must read for all k9 handlers... It gives you reality of what's in field and even get guided on first companies that are leading in k9 handling employment .

Welcome to HP-UX CSE: Official Study Guide and Desk Reference. To me the title of the book ideally reflects the dual purpose of this book; it is both a study guide for those whose primary aim is to successfully achieve the CSE certification as well as a day-to-day job aid for those who need real-life examples of how to get-the-job-done in the myriad of tasks that befall an advanced HP-UX administrator. Those were the two primary goals of the book and with some considerable help from others; I think I have achieved those goals. As well as these two main goals I was frequently asked; "who is the book intended for"? This was a difficult question but can now be answered by saying the book has three main audiences;

HP-UX administrators relatively new to these advanced concepts/tasks. These administrators require a handbook that covers the tasks required of a CSE but also supports recently acquired knowledge from attending training classrooms/workshops.

HP-UX administrators who have been involved in some advanced configuration tasks, have been attending training classrooms/workshops and need a handbook to fill the gaps in the knowledge on some key tasks as well as cement their current knowledge and ideas of advanced configuration/management topics.

HP-UX administrators who have been managing large, complex configurations for some considerable time and have gained their knowledge over the years through blood, sweat and tears. These administrators need a handbook that will fortify their current knowledge as well as highlight what HP regards as the key tasks of a CSE. These administrators may have direct knowledge of HP-UX or may have cross-trained from another operating system.

For each audience they all need an idea of what will be asked of them should they decide to take and hopefully pass the HP-UX Certified Systems Engineer exam. This may also prompt them to realize that some of their knowledge is somewhat lacking and need further training in order to be able to pass the appropriate exam. Just to reiterate they requirements of the exam, if you didn't already know.

To become a fully qualified HP-UX Certified Systems Engineer you need to:

• Pass the exam HP-UX Certified Systems Administrator.

• Pass the exam HP-UX CSE: Advanced Administration.

• Either:

  • Pass the exam HP-UX CSE: High Availability using HP-UX Serviceguard.

  OR

  • Pass the exam HP-UX CSE: Networking and Security.

To further assist in your study for the CSE exam, should you need it, I thought I might point you in the right direction as to which parts/chapters to study for the appropriate exams. Initially I was going to title each part of the book accordingly but it quickly became evident that each exam doesn't fit nicely into a single pigeonhole. In fact, take an example of managing a High Availability Cluster. You not only need to understand the Serviceguard software but ALL aspects of a high availability configuration. This includes disks and volumes, performance management, inter-networking, user-level access to multiple systems as well as security threats to individual machines and to your entire network. A common theme throughout the entire book is the need these days for HP-UX installations to achieve two primary technical goals; High Availability and High Performance. It is not uncommon for a HP-UX CSE to be involved in every aspect of the job all of the time! This may also become true of the CSE exams should the format, content and requirements of the exams change. To help you to focus your efforts, here is an idea of how the exams currently stand in relation to this book:

Another reason I have mentioned these requirements is not only to remind of the exam requirements but also to emphasis what this book is NOT designed for.

This book is NOT designed to replace any formal training; this book assumes you have at least some experience of the topics covered. Whether this knowledge was gained last week on a training class or has been gained through years of on-the-job experience if of no consequence. This book does not have the time to go into every facet of detail or every configuration possibility that you may be able to see demonstrated on a training course/workshop.

This book is NOT designed to cover every possible scenario a HP-UX CSE could find themselves in. I have worked with HP-UX for over 14 years in many environments from offshore oil drilling platforms to anesthesia equipment in an operating theatre. What I have tried to do is provide some scenarios that explain, demonstrate and prove the conceptual details of some technical issue. Being a CSE you are supposed to be the cr�me-de-la-cr�me of HP-UX administrators. As such you can take this information and adapt it to the situations you find your self in.

This book is NOT intended to be a technical reference manual in every possible task of a CSE; I do not cover every option of commands or discuss in detail every aspect of every topic covered. There are other books if you need that level of detail (which I have referenced at the appropriate time) as well as your training materials from your training class/workshops that cover that level of detail. There is always the HP-UX manuals and online documentation if you need further reading!

What I DO cover is a number of examples undertaken on real-life systems using real- life configurations covering real-life topics. In a number of instances subject matter will require knowledge gained from other parts of the book. Remember the role of a CSE is not easily pigeonholed! Most tasks require an almost holistic knowledge of the entire CSE role. A number of the examples build on previous work in the book, showing you the impact of applying one configuration on top of another; commonly this can introduce technical challenges all of their own. Challenges you will find in your own workplace. Hopefully the book will explain any outstanding questions you have as well as give you the confidence to implement some of the ideas for yourself.

In the appendices are a number of topics that I feel were important to cover but did not want to weigh down the actual content of the book. The appendices should be seen as additional and important information and where I couldn't find a single textbook that covered that topic to a level of detail I found appropriate. Appendix B lists the source code for a number of my own programs that I use for demonstration purposes throughout the book. You are free to use them as you wish but neither I nor HP can take any responsibility for any consequences should you use them inappropriately.

At the end of each chapter I have included a number of questions and answers; some are multiple-choice, others involve a more in-depth answer. While these questions may be typical of the type of questions you might see in a particular exam, do not regard them as an exact match to what you will see in an exam, especially where a particular exam requires you to perform hands-on exercises.

Great desk reference

While this book is quite the industrial doorstop and is rather daunting for newbies, it serves as a nice reference and does a great job explaining in-depth such things as VxFS/JFS, kernel options, and memory utilization. There is a section on identifying bottlenecks that I found particularly interesting. With the new exams coming out (soon or already), its usefulness as a study guide is somewhat diminished, but the information contained should continue to be valid for years to come. One of the nice things about operating systems at this level is the long lifetimes and backward compatibility.

Between this book and your own HPUX knowledge level over the years, you can easily master at least the administration exam with no issues.
