A great self-counseling and self-help book!

A great self-counseling and self-help book, using clinically proven methods for improving your emotions!

Your goal for your emotions explains Pucci, is "calm." People often mistakenly believe that the only goal for significant depression and anxiety is happiness, when in fact, the goal needs to be calm. Learning to feel calm in the midst of unfortunate events allows you to more often feel happiness and contentment when things are going well.

I recommend beginning with Chapter 3, "Our Emotional ABC's." People mistakenly believe that A (Adverse events) directly cause C (Consequences of emotions, such as significant anxiety, anger, or depression). In fact, A (Adverse events) trigger B (Beliefs & self-talk) and B (Beliefs & self talk) primarily cause C (Consequences of Emotions such as depression, anxiety, anger, or your goal of Calm). When you learn the details of this essential fact and learn how to use ABC self-help methods, you will experience significant improvement in your emotions.

I have taught the ABCs to my own children when they were growing up and I practice the ABCs of emotions in my life.

A note to counselors - read this book and learn how to more easily present self-help methods to your clients in counseling sessions. This book is directly related to rational emotive behavior therapy and at [...] are listed over 500 outcome REBT research studies. All therapists want to accelerate therapy for their clients. Anxiously Awaiting

As a long time anxiety sufferer, I've read all the books available pertaining to working with the symptoms. Relax, they all say. Unfortunately, relaxing only makes the issue worse as its not confronted head-on. I've always thought relaxing was the key too, but alas, this book by Pucci set the record straight. Since incorporating his techniques, I've noted enough improvement so to be able to stop taking my medication.

CBT is probably not for everyone but well worth investing the cost of the book to find out if its right for you. I don't know Pucci, but am thankful for his contribution to this issue through his book. Don't delay in ordering it. Your recovery begins the moment you begin reading it.

Some useful information

I found some interesting and helpful information in this book. However, there are a couple of points the author makes with which I disagree. Aldo Pucci says that people "can't make you" feel a certain way; I think that, while your feelings may be colored by your past experiences, people can and do trigger sadness, anger, love, joy, etc. by their behavior towards each other. To suggest otherwise is to say that we're absolved from having any responsibility for treating one another with caring and kindness -- that's not the kind of world in which I want to live! Also, Pucci says that, beyond infancy, a person "can't be killed" from a lack of love. Again, I beg to differ; while a loveless life won't strike you dead like a bolt of lightning, there have been countless studies showing that people going through life without a partner die earlier. So, while Pucci gives some useful examples of "stinkin' thinkin'" and how to counteract such negative self-messages, his emphasis on a totally self-reliant life seems bleak and lonely to me.

About the Author
Louis Gary Lamit teaches (Creo Parametric) at De Anza College (since 1984) in Cupertino, CA. Mr. Lamit has worked as a drafter (1966), designer, numerical control (NC) programmer, technical illustrator, and engineer in the automotive, aircraft, and piping industries. A majority of his work experience is in the area of mechanical and piping design. He started as a drafter in Detroit (as a job shopper) in the automobile industry, doing tooling, dies, jigs and fixture layout, and detailing at Koltanbar Engineering, Tool Engineering, Time Engineering, and Premier Engineering for Chrysler, Ford, AMC, and Fisher Body. Mr. Lamit has worked at Remington Arms and Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as a designer, and at Boeing Aircraft and Kollmorgan Optics as an NC programmer and aircraft engineer. He also owns and operates his own consulting firm (CAD-Resources.com- Lamit and Associates), and has been involved with advertising, and patent illustration. He is the author of over 40 books, journals, textbooks, workbooks, tutorials, and handbooks, including children’s journals and books. Mr. Lamit received a BS degree from Western Michigan University in 1970 and did Masters’ work at Wayne State University and Michigan State University. He has also done graduate work at the University of California at Berkeley and holds an NC programming certificate from Boeing Aircraft. A must read for all relevant Relationships!

I found this book to be vitally informative, with many essential tips for people whom have been married or are in a serious relationship. It also includes gay and lesbian relationships and is intuitively riveting. Dr. Asaad is brilliant and my husband and I learned a lot from reading such an inspiring book! I recommend it highly, and without reservation. It is a must read!
Furthermore, this Doctor has a vibrant and uplifting personality. I sent this book to my close friends and they are all grateful. There is always something new to learn to improve our relationships. Dr. Ghazi Assad should be on Oprah's Own network as he brings rays of sunshine into peoples lives!!

In this unusually wide-ranging study, spanning more than a century and covering such diverse forms of expressive culture as Shakespeare, Central Park, symphonies, jazz, art museums, the Marx Brothers, opera, and vaudeville, a leading cultural historian demonstrates how variable and dynamic cultural boundaries have been and how fragile and recent the cultural categories we have learned to accept as natural and eternal are.

For most of the nineteenth century, a wide variety of expressive forms--Shakespearean drama, opera, orchestral music, painting and sculpture, as well as the writings of such authors as Dickens and Longfellow--enjoyed both high cultural status and mass popularity. In the nineteenth century Americans (in addition to whatever specific ethnic, class, and regional cultures they were part of) shared a public culture less hierarchically organized, less fragmented into relatively rigid adjectival groupings than their descendants were to experience. By the twentieth century this cultural eclecticism and openness became increasingly rare. Cultural space was more sharply defined and less flexible than it had been. The theater, once a microcosm of America--housing both the entire spectrum of the population and the complete range of entertainment from tragedy to farce, juggling to ballet, opera to minstrelsy--now fragmented into discrete spaces catering to distinct audiences and separate genres of expressive culture. The same transition occurred in concert halls, opera houses, and museums. A growing chasm between "serious" and "popular," between "high" and "low" culture came to dominate America's expressive arts.

"If there is a tragedy in this development," Levine comments, "it is not only that millions of Americans were now separated from exposure to such creators as Shakespeare, Beethoven, and Verdi, whom they had enjoyed in various formats for much of the nineteenth century, but also that the rigid cultural categories, once they were in place, made it so difficult for so long for so many to understand the value and importance of the popular art forms that were all around them. Too many of those who considered themselves educated and cultured lost for a significant period--and many have still not regained--their ability to discriminate independently, to sort things out for themselves and understand that simply because a form of expressive culture was widely accessible and highly popular it was not therefore necessarily devoid of any redeeming value or artistic merit."

In this innovative historical exploration, Levine not only traces the emergence of such familiar categories as highbrow and lowbrow at the turn of the century, but helps us to understand more clearly both the process of cultural change and the nature of culture in American society.

One of the best books ever written on theatre--a joy

The Scene: Three months before my qualifying exams. I have crammed every book on theatre I can think of. I have notecards that I memorize. I have no love of theatre anymore, no interest in the subject, just trying to get through the ordeal that so many of my friends have failed. I don't allow myself to read books for fun, or all the way through. I only skim for facts to drop.
One day this book arrives in the mail with several others I've ordered. I dutifully skim it for facts to put on my notecards. I find myself being drawn in. It is academic reading--I couldn't imagine that it could be all that enjoyable. More importantly I don't have time to enjoy a book. But I am enjoying it, so I decide to let myself really read the first chapter (on Shakespeare).
I can't put it down. I'm reading about museums now, public parks, things that I will never be able to use on my exams, but I love the way he thinks! Not only am I loving Levine's incredible book, but I am even excited about my field again. Levine's book is an incredible gift, a gift that helped me renew my delight in what scholarship and history can do. A model I will never live up to, but will cherish and delight in. And I did pass, quoting Levine not to impress, but out of a real delight in the field and the joy of sharing ideas.

Charts the Development of American Culture

Spanning over one hundred and fifty years, Lawrence W. Levine's Highbrow/Lowbrow: The Emergence of Cultural Hierarchy in America, charts the development of culture beginning in the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. In Highbrow/Lowbrow, Levine tells the reader through various examples how the United States began with forms of culture celebrated by most of the countryside's population through the years where cultural classes developed and finally to the point where some cultural subjects nearly died off. Through narrow fields of entertainment, he is able to define what was and was not popular culture; how various forms of cultural entertainment were performed and watched or listened to by the general public; and how several key people in the late nineteenth century helped preserve art forms that still exist today. Three distinct areas are covered in the book's three chapters: Chapter One, "William Shakespeare in America" focuses on the popularity and decline of the performance of Shakespeare's works; Chapter Two, "The Sacralization of Culture" highlights the development and developing highbrow status of symphonies and orchestras; and Chapter Three, "Order, Hierarchy and Culture" describes how culture evolved from entertainment for many to culture for few. Lastly, an epilogue from the author briefly expands on culture today versus culture in the past century.

"William Shakespeare in America" chronicles the rise and fall of the performance of Shakespearean plays in the United States from after the Revolutionary War until the end of the nineteenth century. Dramatic performances of Shakespeare were not the norm for the most part, but "...burlesques and parodies...constituted a prominent form of entertainment..." throughout the country. His plays were so popular that they constituted a large portion of theater presented throughout the early-to-mid nineteenth century with the most popular actors and actresses from Europe and America performing. These performances were not limited to the big cities of the eastern seaboard either; they were even performed in small cities throughout the Midwest and western states, like Mud Springs, Cherokee Flat and Rattlesnake in California and mine towns like Silver City, Dayton and Carson City. They were shown with a simple formula: Shakespeare was shown with "...afterpieces and divertissements that surrounded his plays...." Also, the draw to see these plays was strong "...because the people wanted to see great actors who in turn insisted on performing Shakespeare to demonstrate their abilities...." Another point of interest that Levine describes is that plays were seldom true Shakespearean works. Oftentimes the plays were ad-libbed or modified to satisfy the crowd, or the title and content slightly changed to bring about other meanings. For example, a version of Richard III was revised "...by cutting one-third of the lines, eliminating half of the characters, [and] adding scenes from other Shakespearean plays...." However, those who were the self-appointed guardians of high-end theater towards the end of the century, converted Shakespeare "...from a popular playwright whose dramas were the property of those who flocked to see them, into a sacred author who had to be protected from ignorant audiences...."

Next, in "The Sacralization of Culture," Levine does an excellent job of describing how many of the most popular opera houses and symphony orchestras in America were formed. Two big names in the music industry of the day, John Philip Sousa, who is known for his patriotic marches and Henry Lee Higginson, who formed the Boston Symphony Orchestra, are just two of the many cultural revolutionaries Levine discusses in the text. Sousa appealed to the masses, saying that the public would come to appreciate "`high class'" music more if it was interlaced with popular tunes. By contrast, Higginson believed that it was sacrilege to play anything other than classical music in its original form and pandered to the more cultured of society. Even though Higginson made great strides for musicians like paying salaries and starting pensions, he held so strongly to his beliefs for pure music that he operated the symphony at a loss and needed benefactors to keep it afloat. Throughout the chapter, similar subjects are also addressed, such as who should and should not enter museums, what they should wear and how they should conduct themselves once inside.

In "Order, Hierarchy, and Culture," Levine explains how attending events like plays and concerts evolved from "Whispering, talking, laughing, coughing...sneaking snacks, [and] spitting tobacco..." to a "...general success in disciplining and training audiences..." in more respectful behavior. Moreover, museum staffs were dedicated to developing the manners and behaviors of their patrons. One example was the ejecting of a plumber who not only wore his work clothes to the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art but visited the museum directly from work. The museum did not want patrons who smelled bad or who had oil and grease stains on their clothes. This policing was not limited to events held indoors. New York's Central Park had so many regulations as to where one could sit, for example, that it was almost not enjoyable to spend any time there. This effort to raise the cultural standards was intended to raise the cultural awareness of society at large.

The epilogue concludes the text stating that isolating certain cultural themes, like opera for example, has diminished its importance overall. Allan Bloom, the author of The Closing of the American Mind, is quoted as saying, "Classical music...is [now] `dead among the young'...."

As was said earlier, Highbrow/Lowbrow: The Emergence of Cultural Hierarchy in America does an excellent job of describing the rise and fall of Shakespearean drama in America and further gives an excellent portrayal of the development of opera and orchestral music. Additionally, the chapter dealing with the education and development of the viewing and listening public emphasizes how several art forms fell out of vogue with the general public, being labeled too highbrow for many. Although written in 1988, the reader can easily see parallels to today with the popularity of certain art forms like hip-hop music. The stereotypes still exist which classify those who enjoy that form of entertainment as lowbrow. In contrast, those who attend the symphony are seen as a higher social class. It is unfortunate that the highbrow intellectuals of the late nineteenth century were allowed to classify people and their entertainment tastes to such an extreme. Because of their beliefs, opera, classical music, and Shakespearean plays will never be exposed to many in America who would benefit by and truly enjoy them.

Essential to understand culture in Imperialist Society

Simply put, across the late 19th Century the newly consolidate ruling class of industrial and financial magnates seized control over the definitions of culture, established an iron wall between high and low culture, moved to change the relationship between audience and performer, and between performers and those who dicated culture and owned cultural institutions, and changed museums and libraries from institutions established to broaden knowledge for all into places where the elite contemplate perfection.

Levine is one of the great historians, having done his featured work on African American history and culture. Yet, he writes in clear, understandable language. The book is extremely well referenced with every section's notes being the beginning for scholarship and knowledge on what he speaks.

Published in 1990, the book can hardly be taken to task for developments that have come to fruition since then. Music and culture once seen as alternatives to the Eurocentric approaches to high culture Levine outlines, seem to have proceded along the same lines. Free and post-modern Jazz, once the product of an iconoclast approach to mainline Jazz, has tended to take the view that it is "high art" to be comprehended by the totally advanced versus entertainment, while a politically conservative trend to paint Jazz as the U.S/s "true" classical music demand that Jazz emulate European "classical" music with a canon and repertory orchestras aimed at reproducing that canon. Meanwhile, they expel Jazz artists with strong links to Black popular music and dance from their definitions of Jazz. Few tend to share the views of Art Blakey and others about the need to reestablish Jazz as a form of dance and entertainment music for African Americans.

My own focus has been on traditional Black and European American string band music, marketed as "Old Time Music" by record companies in the 1920s. This music was originally produced as pure entertainment for dancing and amusement for the most humble workers, farmers, share croppers, and small businesspeople of the South. Yet, in OTM there is often such an emphasis on knowledge of the history, folkways, and cultural references that one might think that like the art and drama Levine shows to have been "high browed," some believe that OTM can only be appreciated or performed by those who have amassed sufficient knowledge.

Indeed, the entire hipster approach that emerged in the Jazz age with Jazz, Blues, folk, and other alternative musics mirrors the high brow approach used around high culture. Implict in being a hipster is the belief that whatever may be popular is intrinsictly inferior to that "hip" sound that only a small sector of the knowing can appreciate. Hipsters usually move on once music they deemed "hip" becomes popular.

This book was highly recommended by many people so I was excited to get it. However I was extremely disappointed with the unsafe suggestions and practices. It is brand specific as well so won't be useful to those that use other essential oils. I definitely tell people to pass on this one, there are a ton of great books out there that provide safe information.

I use this book for everything essential oil related! Its my number one go to product when looking for an oil to be able to use safely in my children.
The layout is fantastic and it's well organized.
More than a reference guide, it gives helpful information such as oils to avoid for children. Some essential oils aren't safe nor recommended for pregnant women, so it goes through all of that as well.
They break it down based on who you're using the oils for. Babies, which are referenced as one day old all the way to 2 years old, toddlers and young kids(2-5years old), and then other children 5 and above.
It also explains what essential oils are and how to use them. How to benefit from them, how to store them.
It really is a must have for all moms of young ones and mothers to be that are essential oils users! Totally recommend this book!

Not as comprehensive and thorough as I'd like, but it's a good resource for parents like me who are looking for natural remedies for kids, especially the really young ones. Whenever my doctor prescribes a drug for my sick child, I consult this book first and see if there are natural alternatives that can get the job done as effectively.

I've bought at least 10 more copies of this book to give away to my mommy friends!

About the Author
Hiroshi Hayakawa is a professor of drawing and mixed-media photography at the Columbus College of Art and Design. He earned BFAs in Photography and Fine Arts from the Columbus College of Art and Design, as well as his MFA in Photography at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Hiroshi began making kirigami animal sculptures in the mid-'90s when he was asked to create table decorations for a Chinese New Year's party. The Sherrie Gallerie in Columbus, OH represents Hiroshi's photography. He lives in Columbus.

Great book for fans of origami / kirigami and crafts

I was able to see Mr. Hayakawa make some of his designed pups, first hand- at todays Asian festival in Columbus, Ohio. He made numerous breeds of pups for kids. And he took the time to show them how to make some of his projects. He was really nice to everyone. It was interesting to watch how he could fold, cut and shape these paper pups with ease and skill. Off to the side, he had a copy of all 35 pups, fully constructed and painted. They looked impressive and gave those of us in the audience a sense of what could be done with these creations.

The book itself, is very well illustrated. Each breed of dog has its own section, showing you the step by step process. The instructions are very clear and concise. Theres even a symbol key in the front of the book to show you what each one means. There are five tools that you need, which are also shown in a color photo. Many of these items you will have at your home already. After seeing the finished pups in the photos, you will want to detail them with paint as well.

Besides the pups, there are several accessory items you can add to your dog. A dog house, ribbons, bows , sweaters, coats and a fire hydrant. And you can find a handful of other projects online. This would be a fun project book for anyone of any age. I imagine it would be ideal for parents and their children to enjoy together.

Cute paper dogs!

Although I'm just a beginner at the cutting and folding techniques of origami and kirigami, I have enjoyed using these techniques for many years. Since Paper Pups comes with the templates and easy instructions I thought it would be fun to try to create some cute little doggies. The projects are ranked by level of difficulty and even though the Chihuahua was at the intermediate level, that's the one I had to try because I have two real ones! It was pretty easy to follow, even for me, and I first copied the template onto cardstock and then cut it out and followed the folding instructions. In order to color it with similar markings to my own dogs, I used acrylic paints. They say any medium will be fine other than oil based paints. I thought it turned out pretty cute and I even copied the template at a smaller size to make a puppy, too! There's 35 dogs in Paper Pups, so you should be able to find one you like, too!

Have a few friends that have dogs and this was an easy project to do. Book has every things you need except the paper to make the dogs. Once made everyone love them. Great instruction. Delivered undamaged.

I found this book absolutely fascinating. The story is told from the perspective of Che, a lovely, thoughtful, gorgeous young man, with a sense of responsibility way beyond his years. His younger sister, Rosa, is deeply disturbed, yet seemingly to those who first meet her, a delightful little girl. Che's parentals are either deluded or in denial, possibly both. If you're into the darker side of the psyche, this book is absolutely fabulous, with well drawn and relatable characters. (Hopefully Justine is planning another book about Rosa.)

This book was hard to put down. Very suspenseful and endearing at the same time. Rosa is the creepiest kid character I've read in a long time.

Diverse, interesting characters

Che spends his days protecting the world from his psychopathological ten-year-old sister, trying to teach her empathy. Rosa charms adults, her enjoyment comes from fooling even her doctors. She's killed animals, now she's threatening to kill people.

One of my pet peeves about psychology books is inaccurate portrayal of mental illness (though one could argue whether Antisocial Personality Disorder is a true mental illness or a psychological condition). I felt like writer Justine Labalestier googled APD and wrote Rosa based on what she read, rather than actual knowledge of people with the condition. Children are diagnosed with Conduct Disorder, not APD as personality disorders can't be diagnosed before the age of 18. Family Che has diagnosed with APD are caricatures.

Nothing much happened in the first 65% of MY SISTER ROSA. Che told, rather than showed what he saw to be Rosa's pathology. I liked, rooted and felt sorry for him. I also wondered about the reliability of his narration. I kept waiting for Something Big to happen and when it did, I didn't feel a rush of emotion or much of anything. The ending felt anticlimactic.

Labalestier developed an diverse cast of minor characters of different races, religions, sexual orientations and gender expressions. All of the characters had interesting back stories.

MY SISTER ROSA will appeal to and frustrate those interested in psychology.
