With its formula of exhaustively tested recipes paired with heavily illustrated techniques, the series makes it easy for even beginning cooks to produce successful dishes almost every time. For the casual home cook, Italian Classics might be the single best Italian cookbook to own. The book is, in classic Best Recipe fashion, a great big beautiful doorstop of a thing. Even so, it's not crammed with arcana. For most Americans--who in survey after survey say that regional Italian is the cuisine they most enjoy cooking at home--the recipes here will be pretty familiar; the space is devoted not to obscure dishes but to exhaustive treatments of favorites. Pesto, for instance, gets about three pages. You end up with a delicious, perfectly prepared basil paste, and along the way you learn how to bruise herb leaves, you get a treatise on why a garlic press isn't such a bad thing (despite what the professionals say), and finally, you are led into the intriguing territory of nonbasil pestos such as Toasted Nut and Parsley, and Arugula and Ricotta. All the classics are here, from red-checkered-tablecloth dishes like Spaghetti and Meatballs to regional dishes like Ribollita. Throughout, there's a nice balance between authenticity and accessibility. Guaranteed success with Italian cooking

For those not familiar with the Cooks Illustrated books, they are a bit different from most cookbooks. Each dish is approached in a very thorough and rigorous way; different ingredients, amounts, cooking methods, etc. are all examined to determine the tastiest and most convenient recipe. Each recipe goes into detail on how to best prepare the dish, and many recipes offer variations to allow you to customize the dish to your particular taste. After having tried perhaps 20 recipes in this book, I can honestly say that they have all been very good to excellent. One of the most difficult parts about cooking a new dish is deciding which recipe to use- a quick search on the internet might reveal 100 recipes for, say, risotto. The editors of this book have already done the work for you combing through the recipes to find the best one. Highly recommended.

Excellent Italian reference for American cooks

A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years, concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years, writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. I am also very tough on Italian cookbooks in particular.

The "Italian Classics" by the editors of Cooks Illustrated Magazine pleasantly surprised me. I expected the typical Italian American recipes that I dislike. This book is much more authentic that I expected it to be. Even as an experienced Italian cook I find it difficult to criticize this book to any large extent.

The editors of Cook's Illustrated write this book in the same manner as their other books. The writers tell you what they tried that didn't work, before they get to the ingredients and techniques that did work. There are very few pictures in this book. The paper is not the glossy stock that you find in my cookbooks today. I would have appreciated if the book had included the Italian names for the recipes. Sometimes they include the Italian name of the recipes in the narrative about the recipe, and sometimes they do not. But, the recipes themselves more make up for these minor disappointments.

The first recipe that I check out in any Italian cookbook to gauge its authenticity is Spaghetti Carbonara. If this recipe has cream included the book is immediately put back on the shelf. Unexpectedly, the recipe is this book does not add the cream, as American books tend to do. As I looked further, I realized that the authors tried to make each recipe as authentic as possible. The reason for the qualifier is that it is always not possible to make a recipe 100% authentic. I for one have never found an American supplier of Guanciale (cured pig's cheek), and Farro is also tough to come by. The writers did a very nice job substituting products that are easier to locate in the US.

If you are in need of comprehensive and reasonably authentic Italian cookbook, this will make a nice addition to your cookbook collection.

Great book. Needs pictures.

As I have said in many, MANY reviews, I'm a beginner cook. I hope to improve that status eventually. Life in the Corps just doesn't allow for that...yet.

This book is extremely complete. If they are missing any recipes, it can't be many. I would expect a book this large to have a few mistakes. That is what the website and user feedback is for.

I'm working my way through this book. It is not designed to simply sit down and read. It is more of a reference book. It definitely gives me plenty of options on what to do and how.

I like it alot. I will be using it more in the future. I have always wanted to try making my own pasta. It looks so easy on "Iron Chef". Sure enough they have it and they explain a faster method for making it. They go on to explain why it works the way it does. Greatness!!

The only drawback from a beginner cook's point of view is that there are very few pictures. There are several drawings in black and white that give me a good idea of what to do. In the center of the book is a short spread of color pictures of some finished dishes. Granted, the idea of constantly wanting color pictures to follow may be a security blanket for me. Such is life.

As a father of a 3-year-old, I read this book with great interest. If my daughter is half as successful as Schuyler Moore's children, I will be very successful. Most advice books are not this well-written. I recommend this very highly.

Great book for professional musician who had a stroke.

I am a professional musician, and have been for many years. I even used to teach Flamenco guitar. After 5 strokes in just a little over a year I had to relearn a lot to get even close to my ability after playing guitar for almost 20 years. I have just recently started on that journey, but I must say this book is a very good tool. For those wanting to learn more comprehensive finger picking, or classical finger style this book is a sure beat for you, and it even has some beginner Flamenco exercises in it. I am glad I got this book. I will say if you buy the kindle version of this book as I did you will want to get the kindle app for your PC because the lessons can be hard to read on a Kindle.

I will Pahmp You Up!

I am only part way through the exercises in this book but Amazon is asking for my review. All I can say is, I wish I had discovered this book a long time ago, like back in the days when Ahnuld made the above phrase popular. I've been playing guitar for over 35 years and until now (I realize) it's always been about finding shortcuts, tricks, and easier ways to do things. This philosophy, never before realized, became readily apparent within the first few pages of exercises, along with all the shortcomings and limitations it imposed on my playing. For shame! I've been exposed as the 90 pound weakling that I really am!

MUST READ!

Brilliant! If you have a teen (or pre-teen) boy, this is a MUST have. It's got some really great advice...many things as parents we try to tell our teenager, but it doesn't get through to them. This is an excellent way to get some of those great ideas and advice to your teen boy, without it being "ugh, mom and dad AGAIN!". Highly recommended. Have purchased a copy for each teenage boy in our house. Will buy a 3rd when the time comes.

Good for Preteens and Young Teens

I gave this book to my twin 14 year-old boys and asked them to read through several sections. I don't know exactly which sections they read, but both of them spent a decent amount of time with the book (that means an hour for one of them and a couple of hours for the other). Now, telling their mom what they thought of the book seemed like a dance for them. They didn't want to act like they had learned anything (because of course, 14 year-olds know everything), so both of them said it was kind of common sense. Well, maybe the chapter on wearing deodorant and brushing your teeth were, but I think that there were a lot of chapters on topics they hadn't even considered, like grilling a steak, changing a tire, and finding a stud in the wall!

I also had my 24 year-old daughter read through it, and I read several chapters. We both thought that it had great topics and that it was a good manual to have around so that you could learn things at just the right time. We did think that several chapters were very shallow -- especially in the section on impressing girls. It includes topics such as talking to a girl for the first time, planning dates, and meeting the girls' parents. I thought it was lacking in the areas of how to treat a girl with respect (for example, it never even mentions opening doors for her), ideas of what to do on a first date (such as determining what she is interested in), or double dating etiquette. As a mom, I was also a bit disappointed in the the social skills and manners section. It talks about how to make a bed, but doesn't deal with manners items such as eating appropriately, phone and text etiquette, or tips on maintaining a conversation. I would have appreciated a section on how to find out more details about things -- who to talk to or what books to read.

This is a good intro manual for preteen and young teen boys, but I would recommend a detailed follow up for those beyond 13 or 14 with much more information about character-building, leadership traits, common courtesy, and relationship skills.

Very helpful!

Anything and everything you ever wanted to know is in here! Although it says for men, I think it has a lot of information that is useful for everyone. Some stuff I was really interested in, such as the meats.

We started off with girls and dating. I like Jonathan's style, he makes it fun, he does everything step by step and then he adds a fun fact at the end. He makes it a bit hilarious at times as well.

Then we into social skills and manners, work ethics, money management, grooming and clothing. I really think he covered so many excellent topics. I think when boys leave home this would be a wonderful book to give them, so when they say, what did mom say about ironing my shirts, oh yea, here we go, step by step. Awesome information. Oh yea and I won't burn my shirt maybe as much!!!

Then we went into sports, every sport, how to throw a football, basketball, baseball, play golf then on to cars and then cooking. Finally we ended with tools.

This is such a fabulous resource. We must come up with something similar for girls. I really believe this is an excellent resource that they will come to rely on often until they get the hang of being on their own! Their friends might even borrow it!

Not Just for Millennials!

“Are you a special snowflake? Do you love networking to advance your career? Have you never wasted a fresh new day surfing the internet? Ugh. This book is not for you. Please go away.

“This book is for the rest of us. These comics document the wasting of entire beautiful weekends on the internet, the unbearable agony of holding hands on the street with a gorgeous guy, dreaming all day of getting home and back into pajamas, and wondering when, exactly, this adulthood thing begins. In other words, the horrors and awkwardness of young modern life.”

I’m 37 years old (emphasis on OLD) and am still waiting for the day when it feels like I’ve crossed over into adulthood. My lack of human kids doesn’t help, but you’d think my dog kids (both rescue and foster) would help get me at least halfway there. But I prefer sweatpants to jeans (skirts and slacks, what?), never carry a purse (though will stoop to a tote bag if absolutely necessary, like when begging fistfuls of free sample meds from the dermatologist), and wear sports bras exclusively (but only if I must). Last summer our water got shut off for a day because I didn’t realize that the city, in its infinite wisdom (i.e. laziness), had ceased its direct deposit payment plan and now requires all bills to be paid by cash or check. I have a bachelor’s degree that’s probably too old to mean anything anymore, and am still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up/with my life.

In short, Sarah Andersen might be a Millennial, but I can still relate to much of what’s in ADULTHOOD IS A MYTH.

The cartoons are pretty rad, in an understated way, and reminiscent of HYPERBOLE AND A HALF (though maybe with less depression and melancholy). If you’re not already familiar with Sarah’s Scribbles, there’s a tumblr you can check out to get the feel for it. Warning: you will find yourself in a bottomless timesuck of the sort that Andersen’s likely to write about.

This book would make an excellent gift for a) new college graduates; b) your partner who would rather spend New Year’s bingeing on Netflix and takeout than putting on pants/a happy face and venturing out into the world; c) your friend the perpetual man- (or woman-) child; d) anyone who has a pulse.

About the Author
Robert Sardello, PhD, is cofounder (with Cheryl Sanders-Sardello, PhD, in 1992) of the School of Spiritual Psychology. At the University of Dallas, he served as chair of the Department of Psychology, head of the Institute of Philosophic Studies, and graduate dean. He is also cofounder and a faculty member of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture, as well as author of more than 200 articles in scholarly journals and cultural publications, and is a former faculty member of the Chalice of Repose Project in Missoula, Montana. Having developed spiritual psychology based in archetypal psychology, phenomenology, and the spiritual science of Rudolf Steiner from more than thirty-five years of research in this discipline, as well as holding positions in two universities, Dr. Sardello is now an independent teacher and scholar, teaching all over the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., as well as the Czech Republic, the Philippines, and Australia. He is a consultant to many educational and cultural institutions and a dissertation adviser at numerous academic institutions. He is author of several books, including Facing the World with Soul; Love and the World; Freeing the Soul from Fear; The Power of Soul: Living the Twelve Virtues. and Silence.

embodying our actions (and the world) with love

This books is delicious and terribly confusing- confusing only when you attempt to read it with your logical, linear and utilitarian mind. Once you abandon all hope of 'grasping' these powerful meditations on the twelve spiritual virtues, you open the possibility of being taken in yourself, into the creative tensions through which virtue manifests in our being and actions.
In "The Power of Soul" Sardello continues demonstrating the art of spiritual psychology. With beautiful and highly observant sketches of inner phenomena, Sardello sheds light upon experiences so subtle that they often slip by our daily consciousness unaware. Yet, by entering into Sardello's description of each virtue's profile, we can slow down and begin to dwell within our own inner processes and, therefore, we can take our own independent steps in bringing the spiritual virtues into the world with our unique, individualized touch.

Sardello is one of the most powerful original thinkers that I have come across. His work is relevant, deeply penetrating and provocative. I love this book. It has given me a way to reconcile modern life with a life of the spirit.
