This book chronicles the merger wave during the mid seventies to the late eighties. The book looks not only at the raiders, but also at other featured players in the takeover game: the investment bankers, attorneys, and arbitragers, considered the main personalities in the takeover game. You will find many figures depicted in this book.

Author Robert Slater was able to bring these players to life with inside descriptions of their lives. Profiled in these pages are the leading figures in the American takeover field. Titans like T. Boone Pickens, Carl Icahn, Saul Steinberg, and Ted Turner. As well as such behind the scenes personalities as lawyers Martin Lipton and Joseph Flom. This is the best book ever written for those in the meantime and looking for peace. The author speaks in ways you can only hope for. I have never read a self-help book if you can call it that, but this is the one I think that every person should read. You will not find a better written book. There are not enough words to describe how wounderful this book really is. Buy it, Read it, live it. Your life will get better before you finish it!

It presents a previously untold story of how individuals in contemporary urban Mexico construct their identities, attitudes, and practices in the context of a dominant national belief system. The book centers around Mexicans' engagement with three racialized pillars of Mexican national ideology - the promotion of race mixture, the assertion of an absence of racism in the country, and the marginalization of blackness in Mexico.

The subjects of this book are mestizos - the mixed-race people of Mexico who are of Indigenous, African, and European ancestry and the intended consumers of this national ideology. Land of the Cosmic Race illustrates how Mexican mestizos navigate the sea of contradictions that arise when their everyday lived experiences conflict with the national stance and how they manage these paradoxes in a way that upholds, protects, and reproduces the national ideology. Drawing on a year of participant observation, over 110 interviews, and focus-groups from Veracruz, Mexico, Christina A. Sue offers rich insight into the relationship between race-based national ideology and the attitudes and behaviors of mixed-race Mexicans. Most importantly, she theorizes as to why elite-based ideology not only survives but actually thrives within the popular understandings and discourse of those over whom it is designed to govern.

About the Author
Bob Strong is University Foundation Professor of Investment Education and Professor of Finance at the University of Maine. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point, a Master of Science degree in business administration from Boston University, and a PhD in finance from Penn State University. He has also been a visiting professor of finance at Maine Maritime Academy and at Harvard University, where he was Deputy Director of the Summer Economics Program from 1997–1999. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst. Dr. Strong has consulted on risk management and asset valuation for organizations such as Eastern Maine Healthcare, Bangor Hydro Electric Company, Maine Public Service Company, Energy Atlantic, the Maine State Police, the Maine Forest Service, Irving Oil, James W. Sewall Company, and Texas Instruments. He has been a conference speaker for the Chicago Board Options Exchange, the Chicago Board of Trade, and the American Stock Exchange. His current research interests center on investor asset allocation. In addition to four successful textbooks, he has published in journals ranging from the JOURNAL OF FINANCE and THE JOURNAL OF PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT to the trade journals PENSIONS & INVESTMENTS and FUTURES.

Best Derivatives Book I Have Ever Used

I find it hard to believe that anyone would find this book difficult to follow or undertand. I have been teaching derivatives at the graduate finance level for 13 years and have never seen a better book. Most of the books I have reviewed are useless as a teaching tool. They tend to be nothing more than one writer/professor showing his colleagues how smart he is. I could not recommend this book more for anyone needing a solid introduction to derivatives.

The section on osteoporosis genes identified by genome-wide association studies is particularly useful and effectively summarises a subset of the at least 56 loci that have shown a robust association with BMD at genome-wide significant level and have been replicated. Although these genes explain only about 4% of the variation in BMD and cannot be used to improve fracture risk prediction, they have pinpointed many factors in critical molecular pathways in bone that provide promising candidates for novel therapeutic interventions. The section on genetic disorders of vitamin D synthesis and action elegantly shows how the study of affected children with 1a-hydroxylase deficiency and hereditary vitamin D resistant rickets continues to provide a more complete understanding of the biological role of 1,25(OH)2D in vivo. From Golf Giantt to Coffee King - John Richardson Rules!

I found John Richardson through his scratch2scratch blog. He accomplished something I,
and many many other golfers only dream of, to shoot a perfect round of golf. I have been
reading his golf blog for some time now and have been deeply affected by his insights and
advice regarding not only golf, but life in general. I read his coffee shop book, because living
in Hollywood, California, I am also a driven coffeeholic! This is the land of the quadruple
(and larger) espresso and we take coffee consumption VERY seriously.

I read this book hoping to learn more about one of my favorite subjects (coffee) with no
intention of actually starting a coffee shop. What I found was a wealth of information about
the coffee shop business and SO much more! I am an entrepreneur and record producer and
have had some pretty reasonable success on MTV and in films and television. In the age of
digital downloads and changing technology there is one thing that is more important than
most everything else - HAPPY CUSTOMERS! John Richardson has (yet again) made it very clear
that the basics to most ANY business is customer satisfaction, and the tools and attitdue he puts
forth in in Wake Up and Smell The Profit are the fundametntal building blocks of ANY successful
business. Not only is it a good read, but it could be considered a handbook for any entrepreneur
that needs a refresher course or a wake up call. Thanks again to my favorite golf writer for more

Best Business Book Yet

My fiance and I have been reading and researching so much, and these gentlemen put all the important key topics into easy to follow terms. I have a food franchise background and he has a creative background...but this book finally got us to discuss what's most important together- the fact that opening a business together is for the money! Creative types don't always start a venture for profit...but without it, what's the future like for this venture?
Thank you Coffee Boys for opening our discussion and keep us on the same page before diving in. Excellent book!!!

Learn from the Cafe Yoda's!!!

I've bought and read several books on running a cafe, many of which give you very generic advice such as "location is very important" or "you need to focus on training," or provide a list of what you need to tick off, but don't given you a firm point of view on what to do or not do. That's where I found "Wake Up and Smell the Profit" is different, and superior. The authors give you definitive actions or advice, which if you are running or planning on opening a cafe you ignore at your peril. The story telling format is so much more persuasive than lots of text book type proclamations. They allow you to learn from their first hand successes AND failures. A great forerunner to their second book ... "The Coffee Boys' Step by Step Guide" which is even more richer with precious nuggets to glean.

Thirty Years On The Line

First of all, Amazon lists this book as being out of print. It is in fact not. I've just ordered a copy by calling the publisher @ 800.563.5318.
dmc associates has this book in print along with Commissioner Stapleton's other five books. Which are Commish:1990, Fire and Water:1992, Jakes:1994, Ffops:1996 and Lufts:1998. dmc has also informed me that another book from the Commissioner will be published in May of 2000. Each of these books is a true "must read" for everyone in the fire service or everyone interested in the profession.

A must read for anyone with an interest in Fire Fighting and the personalities behind the characters who work in this heroic line of business. Stapleton's wit and acute observational sense taught me much more than I imagined possible. Bravo!!!
Although Amazon states it is out of print, I got my copy through the publisher (dmc associates) and they tell me it is NOT out of print. Stapleton has written 5 other books. Although the characters are ficticious the fire house situations and fire fighting battles will fill you with suspense, laughter and tears. Many lessons to be learned.

Great book for leaders!

TL:DR - This book brings up great points that even great managers can be guilty of doing, and provides alternative view points / advice.

This book is an easy read. If you put aside 15 minutes a day, that's enough time to read and digest one chapter a day.

He breaks down the challenges 'Santa' faces, and then identifies the root cause of the challenge and then addressing that appropriately. I think this is the strength of this book - don't put a bandaid on a problem. Identify the correct root cause and approach the issue at a fundamental level.

If you are looking to gather different perspectives for your management style and how you manage, as well as an easy read with great analogies, then get this book.

Santa Claus Tips For Successful Customer Service

This was a quick enjoyable leadership book designed for any new leader in the business field, in an educational leadership program, and in customer service management. These general leadership skills are often overlooked by young leaders; nevertheless, the gifts of professional leadership skills to develop a strong team of co-workers can be helpful to anyone. In summary, this book can be useful in the following settings: in small business book studies to assist with training employees about the importance of customer service; at school faculty meeting to discuss developing teachers, parents, and students involvement within schools; also, this book can be used to motivate young adults to start reading similar leadership and management books to enhance their people skills.
