The Revenge of Jefferson Gawne is full of action and good old fashioned romance. Seltzer is one of the few that actually lived the life he wrote about. Very rare!

About the Author
Mark L. Knapp is the Jesse H. Jones Centennial Professor Emeritus and a Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin. He was the editor of Human Communication Research (1980-83); an Eastern Communication Association Scholar (1982-83); an ICA Fellow (1980); and an NCA Distinguished Scholar. The Mark L. Knapp Award for career contributions to the study of interpersonal communication is awarded annually by the National Communication Association. He received teaching awards from two professional associations and four different universities. He was the President of ICA (1975-76); NCA (1989-90); the Association for Communication Administrators (1996-97); and the University of Texas chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society (2001-03). He chaired the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas from 1989-1996 and 2000-2001. Four of his books are: NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION IN HUMAN INTERACTION; INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION AND HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS; LYING AND DECEPTION IN HUMAN INTERACTION and THE HANDBOOK OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION.

Judith A. Hall is University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychology at Northeastern University. She has published widely on topics in nonverbal communication, especially accuracy in perceiving nonverbal cues. She has been Editor of the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior and is currently one of its Associate Editors. She is author of NONVERBAL SEX DIFFERENCES: COMMUNICATION ACCURACY AND EXPRESSIVE STYLE, co-editor of INTERPERSONAL SENSITIVITY: THEORY AND MANAGEMENT with Frank J. Bernieri, and co-editor of the HANDBOOK OF NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION with Mark L. Knapp.

Terrence G. Horgan is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Michigan-Flint.

nourishment for my True Self

I often find myself releasing a spontaneous sigh as I read just the first line of the succinct daily tips; the wisdom so resonates with my True Self. Each tip starts with a one sentence heading followed by a supportive paragraph, leaving me with a clear "mantra" as I go about my day. Though each page works well as a focus for a daily mindfulness practice (and is short enough that I can fit it in to even the busiest of mornings), I sometimes find myself reading more than one page at a time because reading it feels so good. I appreciate that I could start reading at the first page no matter what day of the year it was - unlike some daily readers that are dated and I somehow feel "behind" if it's not Jan 1 and so I need to start somewhere in the middle of the book.

A wake up call....

Given today's society, the demands on all of us to produce, succeed and juggle many different things at once, we will all quickly lose sight and focus as to what is really important and the things that make us feel rewarded. "The Possibility Coaches' Guide To Living and Inspired, Empowered, and Joy-filled Life!" gives me a daily tip that helps me regain focus, target my energies, and allows me to savor the rewards the I achieve each day. It allows me to grow more as a person, as a manager, and as a husband by keeping me focused on what the driving forces in my life truly are and the impact that I have on others. It is my wake up call to how I lost that focus prior to reading this book. Thank you Jon and Chris for sharing these tips with us.

Good but flawed

I suspect that among the reasons why this is not currently in print, two stand out. The first is, unfortunately, The Band aren't in vogue anymore, so why reprint the book and use paper that's earmarked for a Britney Spears quickie bio, right? Another reason, though, is that Barney Hoskyns is only passable at writing a biography, however much he may love his subject. There's a lot of details he simply gets wrong (No, Mr. Hoskyns, Lily Tomlin and Albert Brooks are NOT from Canada; Tomlin was born in Detroit and Brooks in California) and there's a lot of his critical opinions which render his judgement suspect (his critiques of Jesse Winchester and John Hammond, Jr. are laughable). But, as said, Hoskyns does love The Band and when he sticks to telling their story, their musical legacy gains dimension. You come away from the book wishing that so many things could've been different for them all, but grateful that they've also given us a lot of great music. So I hope it gets reprinted, but with considerable revisions.

Shoddy research

The research in this book is unbelievably shoddy. In addition to the examples already given, here are two more: On page 328 he states that The Band played the Carter Baron Amphitheater in Washington, DC on 16 August 1976. The actual date was 17 JULY 1976, and there was a King Biscuit Flower Hour recorded there to prove it, complete with the correct date. Also, I saw The Band on 18 July 1976 at Music Inn, Lenox, MA, where they were late because their equipment had been delayed from DC the night before. Then on page 384 he states that The Band was opening for Crosby, Stills and Nash on their Florida tour the first week in March of 1986. That would have been a real trick, as David Crosby was in prison then. I saw three of those Florida shows, and The Band headlined all of them, no CS&N. Their final show with Richard Manuel was March 3, 1986 in Winter Park, FL, something Hoskyns managed to get right. Avoid this poorly researched mess.

With close-up analysis by The Band's "mentor", Ronnie Hawkins, we are taken on a journey of their wonderous lives. From the rise of this magnificent band to their virtual disappearance after the Last Waltz. This bio is thorough and left me with a greater understanding of the choices they were forced to make. An enjoyable read. mid

Not what I expected

The author took a similar approach to this book as did Eliyahu M. Goldratt in "The Goal". This is a novel about a production plant, suffering many or all of the problems very common in industry in varying degrees. I was expecting more of a treatise on 6-sigma, and the managmeent thereof, but then I didn't investigate the book that well.
If you are looking for an introduction to 6-sigma, how to develop an implementation plan, and see how it can play out, this is a good read, just as The Goal is good in what it does.
The book is a good read, effective for what the author intended, but if you are experienced or knowledgeable, who may want to pass. I would refer it to someone looking to investigate 6 sigma.

really good in terms of overall theory

I liked this author's Acoustic Guitar Styles book so much, I had to get this one. I'm about 1/3 of the way through, and so far its very good. He's really thorough, and sometimes it moves a little slow. I find I need to move through it pretty quickly because I want to get to some exciting stuff. But I appreciate the clear writing and explanations of the theory behind the musical ideas.

It's definitely worth getting - but it will take some discipline to go through it. He doesn't just throw Blues riffs and turn arounds at you - as in many other blues books. He really is about helping the reader completely learn the styles and structure - and how to build on it. He's definitely helping me improve.

The book pursues a worthy idea: learn acoustic blues with a finger-picking style of play. Curiously, the instructional CD was blank. Amazon replaced it and the replacement was blank as well. First time I've seen this sort of thing. I hope Amazon notifies the publisher.

great book; CD in wrong format

I had problems with the CD, until I put it in my computer. It turns out that all the files are in .aif format, which my computer will play, but my cd player doesn't recognize.

I thought the book was great. I felt that the way it progressed from one lesson/track to the next was really helpful.

Some things you can learn from this book:
- Basic blues progressions, in several keys
- Various chord voicings (eg different ways of playing A7, E7, in multiple positions and within same position)
- intro to movable chord shapes.
- Various rhythmic patterns

This books is a great way to break away from the typically boring material contained in most beginner guitar books. This would be a good "second book" (or third...) for someone learning guitar. By playing music you like, I think you'll advance your skills more quickly.

About the Author
Barry C. Field is Professor of Resource Economics at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Previously he taught at the University of Miami and The George Washington University. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Cornell University, and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. At the University of Massachusetts he has devoted many years to teaching natural resource economics to students at all levels, and has worked to develop an undergraduate major in environmental and resource economics. Professor Field is the author of numerous articles on resource and environmental economics.

This book is very well written and covers key notions of environmental economics. One thing I particular like about this book is its lucidity. It reads just like a good novel.

As the title suggests, this is an introductory book. Don't expect to see deep theories or math in this books.
