The bible and encyclopaedia of wastewater engineering

I first got exposed to the textbook as an undergraduate student in civil engineering. Served as an excellent in depth textbook for that level. During my masters program it was a good starting point. As a consulting engineer, I can find most of the basic and fundamental answers. The language is lucid and simple. I have read lots of books on wastewater engineering. Agreed that there are more detailed texts available on specific areas of wastewater treatment, but this textbook does a very good job of striking that balance just right of covering material in enough detail for students and the practising engineer. It is usually enough unless you are writing a masters thesis or a doctoral dissertation. This text, together with the companion textbook, Collection and Pumping of Wastewater has served me very well during my college and professional career. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a good book on wastewater treatment. I very respectfully disagree with the gentleman from Istanbul above who feels that this book is poor. When taking my PE exam, if I was to be limited to just one textbook on wastewater, I would take this one.

Review from a process engineer

The book gives the modern process engineer enough background to engineer complete waste water treatment plants. Specially the biological part is very good. Only at the physical chemical part, the information is based on installations produced in the US. The European (nicer) designes and developments are not described in the book.

fourth edition overdue!

there is a bit of truth in all the above reviews. It has not entirely been my bible, but more a Readers Digest version; if I need a quick answer, it is the first book I grab. Yes there are a lot of mathematical mistakes or misprints in it,and that includes a good number of the worked examples, which rather defeats the purpose. Yes it is very American orientated, but it also has tables and footnotes throughout, giving useful or immediate conversions to other systems, well, metric that is, not imperial. There are a lot nicer processes about, some definitely European. But that misses the point a bit: the most fundamental problem is that the book is nearly ten years old. Therefore it is not surprising that newer processes are missing. I am desperately looking forward to a fourth edition, and I'll be the first to buy it! In the meantime I'll keep using the third. But what happened to the (Indian) paperback version, which was a lot better priced for a book of this age? Still, there is no substitute!

A common element in all of the essays is honesty. A sibling writes...I did the usual things kids do while growing up--had friends--just never brought them home. Participated in Girl Scouts and cheerleading--just never had my family at events. Did Mom sense my embarrassment at having a brother with multiple disabilities--one who d whoop and strike the air with his fist at inappropriate times? (Is there an appropriate time? Football games?) Or was she ashamed of his behavior and I absorbed this shame? Because shame it was. I was ashamed of Jimmy. There. I wrote it. (Can t quite say it, though.) I was ashamed and now I m ashamed of my shame.

Excellent read

Book was recommended. Purchased and found it to be most interesting. I needed to know if others with siblings with disabilities, felt some of the things I felt having to be the "chosen" one to take on this person after my parents passed. Other siblings weren't able to take care of themselves much less someone else. The issue had never been discussed, and many times things go pretty smoothly, however, I am at an age where I must begin making some important decisions for my family and self. If I'm not around to care for this person, does it then fall on my children? A good read for all who have willingly and unwillingly cared for a sibling.

A book of truth...

If you are a sibling of someone with a disability, this book will spell out words straight from your soul. Here people have written about the most pertinent issues in their sibling-lives, having teased out the questions, offered some tentative answers, but still let their insecurities and their further questions shine through. The authors in this book have written with love and compassion, but also with doubt and fear - and so their words ring true with those who have felt feelings of a similar kind to theirs. As a sibling of someone with a disability myself, I saw notes of myself throughout the essays in this book... every few pages something would ring pertinent and true.

Read this book if you are a sibling, and you will feel recognized and validated. Read this book if you just want to know about siblings of people with disabilities too, because there is so much scope for learning about a multitude of issues within it. Through such a variety of different types of relationships, disabilities, lifestyles and situations, this book gives a look at sibling issues from the inside, and in siblings' own words.

They describe the technical constraints and affordances of the system and track developments in programming, gameplay, interface, and aesthetics. Adventure, for example, was the first game to represent a virtual space larger than the screen (anticipating the boundless virtual spaces of such later games as World of Warcraft and Grand Theft Auto), by allowing the player to walk off one side into another space; and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back was an early instance of interaction between media properties and video games. Montfort and Bogost show that the Atari VCS--often considered merely a retro fetish object--is an essential part of the history of video games.

What a fascinating book. It's a terrific idea to examine the iconic Atari 2600 in this way, and the authors do a good job of exploring it at the lowest levels. They make a good case that the physical hardware design directly influenced the design of some of the device's most famous (and infamous) games, and that those early design tradeoffs themselves led to certain conventions still apparent in modern video game design. The book's organized around several key game cartridges, each of which is a case study to point out some aspect of the technical or cultural impact of the Atari; it's a really good way to organize the narrative.

If you've only ever worked with "modern" graphic computer technology (i.e. anything with pixels), you'll be really amazed at what the Atari programmers were able to do with the unbelievable constraints they had to work with. One of the most incredible things I learned was that the system had only 128 bytes of RAM, not even enough to store this sentence in memory. In contrast, the cheap laptop I'm writing this on has more than 9 million times as much RAM available. That is an almost unimaginable difference in scale.

Unfortunately, the book is really poorly written. The two authors obviously divided the subject into cultural and technical sections, each covering their own turf. The book tends to go back and forth between these topics, so there are weird changes in tone, references to ideas that haven't been introduced clearly, and an annoying use of jargon. Overall, the book suffers from the academic tendency to try to point out even the most mundane and obvious details ("the joysticks were connected to the unit by cables") as well as a total lack of understanding what the reader may know coming to the book. So we end up slogging through technical sections that haven't explained basic concepts, even when it would be simple to do so, and when an understanding of those concepts is absolutely key to the argument. It's very frustrating, because any editor should have been able to catch this kind of mistake. An editor would have also been able to salvage the terrible chapter on Yar's Revenge, which feels like a jumble of first-draft notes and facts.

That said, it's still a highly recommended book. I can't think of anything else like it. I really hope this series on "Platform Studies" improves with future books.

The guiltiest of pleasures

"Racing The Beam" is a book on a delicious subject that suffers from serving multiple masters. Who is the target demographic here - is it the technogeek enthusiast? Or the Wired cultural sociologist? Maybe it's the Retro Gamer reader who has fond memories of the VCS platform and is looking for a bit of behind-the-scenes action. Authors Nick Monforst and Ian Bogost, whom seem to be hewing to the publisher's adage that every equation cuts your book sales in half, do the reader no favors by leaving out such appendix gold as a memory/register map of the VCS and something along the lines of a brief "Hello World" code example. Sound, which is the other half of the equation, gets even shorter shrift - if the hardware supposedly can't synthesize a chromatic scale in tune, how did later programmers like Synthcart's Paul Slocum get around this?

One of the book's problems is that the authors try to make the book seem timely by trying to force connections between its vintage software biopics and such breathtakingly unrelated modern titles as World Of Warcraft, Grand Theft Auto, and Tony Hawk Pro Skater. It's almost like the publisher was feeling nervous that nobody of college age could relate to such early games, which is a shame given that the stories are all fascinating in their own right. And on the hardware side, while the Apple II and C-64 get brief nods why are no comparisons drawn between the Atari VCS and Jay Miner's later designs incl. the Atari 400, 800 and Amiga? And what were the specs of the Mattel Intellivision anyway, seeing as how it gets mentioned so often as the VCS's main rival?

Any reader old enough to remember this hardware as a wood-grain box is probably going to have a few comments bordering on the personal, but let's keep things short. Am I the only person wondering why the rather staid VCS game "Adventure" got such over-the-top respect while Exidy's more refined (and clearly related) 1981 arcade game "Venture" goes unmentioned? How was Video Chess able to perform move lookahead with nearly no stack? And why was the story behind the most important sidescroller ever to be ported, Defender, ignored almost entirely?

That said, I loved very minute spent reading this and look forward to seeing more from the "Platform Studies" series. And I bet you will too. Only next time around - more pictures!

Immensely cool subject; kind of listless delivery

A fact that I still can't entirely wrap my head around, after reading this book, is that the Atari 2600 had only a few hundred bytes of RAM. It had little enough RAM that the programmer had to very carefully time his graphics operations so that characters got drawn to the screen before the monitor's electron gun arrived. Unlike other game systems, the 2600 wasn't "frame-buffered": you couldn't draw an entire screen's worth of data, then push it to the screen all at once when the display refreshed.

This design limitation led to all manner of digital hacking, which somehow, miraculously, allowed the game industry -- and Atari in particular -- to flourish. Montfort and Bogost do a decent job explaining the technology, at a level somewhat above what most computer users can be expected to have; if you don't grok the concept of a CPU register, a good bit of Racing the Beam will be tough going for you.

Their larger project is to view the whole world of gaming -- from the code up to the artwork, to actually playing the game, to the social world around game consoles -- with an understanding of how the technology limits and frees all the layers above it. What significance is it, from the game player's perspective, that the Atari had special registers to render sprites? In what way did this free game designers? In what ways did it constrain them? The authors view videogames the way that many view art generally: as the act of overcoming the limitations of a medium. They believe that the lowest level of a game's design has largely been left out of discussions of the larger game story.

They manage to bring all the layers of gaming together reasonably well, but the book didn't wow me: I'd be unlikely to pursue any future books in the "Platform Series," of which Racing the Beam is the first.

Absolutely a stunner of a book!!!!

*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest

Ahh, okay, I must address this first, this book ends with one HECK of a cliff
hanger. S.J. Sawyer, what are you doing to your readers?!?!?! *sigh* Okay, so
the book was incredible, absolutely fun, sweet, sexy in places, and then
BOOM! Get book four ready before you read book three. You'll thank me!

As you probably already know, this is just a continuation of the first two
books, getting us closer to the end of the summer and the start of the school
year. Mason and Red are continuing with their relationship and figuring out
their developing and blooming feelings. They are trying to figure out if there is
more to them than just hot and heavy lust. It's a must read. One thing I must
say is "Salt the pickles?!" You'll understand once you read the story. It's a cute
and funny little blip between the two.

This book expands on more than just Red and Mason though, which I loved.
You learn more about the girls, their friendships, and a bit of history about
them. You get a glimpse into the craziness that occurs between the four girls
when they are alone, like the best way not to open a wine bottle when you
don't have a corkscrew.

I enjoyed the path the author took with this story and the expansion upon the
girls in the story. It kind of refresh the story a bit and kept it from getting "too"
drawn out between Mason and Red. It answered lingering questions that were
floating around. It also showed the bond between the other characters. Great
job S.J.

I can't wait to get my hands on book four. It's an absolute must and until I do
I might just be a *bit* upset with the author. Such a great series, you must read it!!!

Phenomenal! Can't wait for the next one!

S.J. did it again. Every time she manages to amaze me. Fix Your Makeup definitely didn't let me down. It had it all. Laughs. Love. Sex. From the start you are pulled in with the humor and complete realness of the characters. You can completely relate to one or more of them. Mason is one of my favorite book boyfriends with his sweet southern charm and I'm jealous of Red on a regular basis. Mary Lou is up to even more shenanigans which has me laughing the entire time.

Lots of major information is revealed in this book that puts their friendships and relationships to the test. Can they survive all that is thrown their way? You'll have to read to find out. I for one am counting down the days until Say a Prayer for the great finale of this serial.

Oh sweet baby Jesus, this book is 5 freaking stars!! I love this series so hard,it's quickly becoming one of my all time favorite's. If you love books that will have you laughing your a$$ off one page and crying the next and then throw in some hot scenes then this is definitely a series for you! I think that Ms.Sawyer could write a dozen of these books and I would read them.
This book continues from the others. Red and Mason are still continues their "summer fling" and learning different things from the past. And of course we have the crazy best friend Mary Lou,who needs her own book!! I don't want to give to much away because if you haven't read this series you definitely need to get on that and if you have oh lordy be prepared this book is going wreck you! The way this book is written is so good it keeps drawing you in. I finished this book in one sitting, I just couldn't put it down! I definitely recommend this series!
