Useful but flawed

I was excited to find this book when I decided to build my own gaming desktop...it was up to date and full of good reviews. This is 6 months down the road and I'm typing this on the very computer it helped me build. I hadn't ever built a computer before and I didn't have any experts in person who I could call over to help in tough moments. I do owe quite a bit to this book and I don't want to overlook that, however there are flaws. I'm pretty sure that this book alone wouldn't be enough for everybody.

My biggest complaint is that the book tries to not alienate people with "techno babble". Granted, I bought a "for dummies" book...I knew it wasn't going to read like a motherboard manual, but come on...we're talking about building a freaking computer here, you'd be foolish not to expect some "techno babble". You're better off having to google some technical terms than being left in the dark entirely!

One moment that had me freaked out was connecting the buttons and lights of the case to the motherboard. The wires are all tiny and only are marked by random letters and maybe a + or - symbol...its the kind of thing thats a breeze after you've done it once or twice, but when you are figuring it out on your own with no help at all (the book provided *no* help with this at all...I just reread the section to make sure I didn't miss it the first time around).

The other thing which I can't imagine other people having an easy time with is deciding exactly what to buy. What I did (and anybody interested in buying this book could do) is go to a well populated, well-informed forum and ask what people there would recommend in a certain price range. It would be nice though if the book would get a bit more in depth with this. I understand that books can't stay up to date with something that evolves as quickly as computer components, but there is basic advice that doesn't change nearly as quickly and overall rules that don't really change at all.

I would still recommend this book to people because at least at the time I bought it there wasn't anything else out there that was quite as useful. It's definitely worth buying...just don't assume it's all you'll need to build your first computer if you're walking into this clueless and need handholding the entire way.

Great introduction and written in a easy to understand style

I've worked with PCs for over twenty years, but it's been ten-plus years since I had a need to look inside one other than to add the occasional RAM chip. I decided its time to replace my PC and was disappointed at the configuration options available from Dell,HP, and Sony, so I decided to consider building one with my specific wants in mind.

Mark does a wonderful job explaining the basics of what you need to know, what's important and what's not important. I read the book in one day and felt completely comfortable specifying my a PC to meet my needs. I've already decided what I want in my new PC. I went back and figured out what I would have to add to the HP and Dell configurations to match my own design. Doing it myself looks like I'll save 20% to 25% ($1,400 vs $1,750-$1,900). Not bad for a day of reading and day of assembly. An added bonus will be the lack of bloat-ware (a/k/a/ useless software) usually installed by HP and Dell.

Not surprising, Amazon sells 90% of the components I want so I'll be making good use my Amazon Prime shipping plan. My UPS guy already thinks I own stock in Amazon, so what's a few more boxes!

Hand-holding for the novice

Imagine all of those beautiful, expensive parts on your work table, and a trusted friend shows up to walk you through the process of building your first computer. He's there to look over your should and help when you need. You are confident and empowered.

This is an excellent book, with very clear logic about laying out and building three different levels of computer systems. While I have been a PC user since 1981, I never tried to build one until now, and I was worried about how the big bucks I was plunking down would translate.

Now that you have all these parts, where do you start? What should your concerns be? in 28 years of PC fiddling and replacing parts, for example, I never had anybody tell me that it was okay (and useful) to use a magnetic screwdriver.

While it is, technologically speaking, a step behind the latest state of the art, it covers the fundamental order and process of assembly and test in clear, concise and memorable prose. Couple this with the "bad english" instructions that will come with your components, and you should get through this fine.

The author is good enough to inspire confidence. I guess the only things I saw that were lacking is I would like to have seen him write about building a laptop and about liquid cooling. Other than that, I could not think of an idea that was missed.

There is also a CD with it. Oddly enough, this book lacks a "troubleshooting" chapter or section, but that's the only flaw I've found.

This is a great read for anyone who works in or on the periphery of big corporations. The author parallels his personal life with his corporate career, which makes this book a bit different from others, but that's what real life is all about, isn't it? He tells us that doing everything right -- working hard, getting a good education, showing ambition (but not too much ambition), being honest and ethical -- may or may not get you where you're taught you're supposed to go. Great "extra reading" material for a Management or Entrepreneurship class.

About the Author
HARRISON H. BARRETT received a BS in physics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, an MS in Physics from MIT, and a PhD in applied physics from Harvard. Dr. Barrett is a professor in the Optical Sciences Center, the Department of Radiology, and the Program in Applied Mathematics and serves as Director of the Center for Gamma-ray Imaging. The holder of twenty-three U.S. patents, he is the recipient of the IEEE Medical Imaging Scientist Award and a Humboldt Prize and the coauthor, with William Swindell, of Radiological Imaging: The Theory of Image Formation, Detection, and Processing.

KYLE J. MYERS received a BS in Mathematics and Physics from Occidental College and an MS and PhD in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona. Dr. Myers is the Chief of the Medical Imaging and Computer Applications Branch of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. She is a member of the SPIE, the Optical Society of America, and the Medical Image Perception Society (MIPS), and recently served as cochair of the Medical Image Perception Conference sponsored by MIPS.

Extremely thorough and rigorous resource

This book always amazes me whenever I use it for the absolutely incredible amount of material that it covers in such depth. I had the tremendous good fortune to have taken a Physical Optics course with Prof. Barrett, and it would be impossible to believe that one person can know so much unless you have personally talked with him about science or had a class with him. The rumor in the department is that Dr. Barrett is the only professor to at one time or other have taught ALL of the department's core graduate courses during his career at the College of Optical Sciences. Furthermore, he is one of the rare scientists who is an authority in his field both theoretically and experimentally, so you do not get a one-sided perspective as can often happen with science texts. The book reflects his vast knowledge, expertise, rigor, and thoroughness.

Of course, the book has several chapters on mathematical formalism, including the linear algebra, dirac delta function, Fourier theory, and group theory. The imaging theory is there, as well as diffraction theory. He covers photon statistics and detection, including the necessary quantum mechanics. He covers several advanced imaging concepts that I haven't any idea about myself. You probably could not find a more comprehensive book in the field of imaging and physical optics. Another benefit is that, at least for the chapters I have used, the individual chapters seem to stand well on their own and you are not forced to study the book in order.

This book is not for the faint of heart in any respect. The material itself is not for the faint of heart: it is extremely rigorous and will require your careful attention, but I believe it is well explained and manageable for someone who is serious about learning it. The size of the book is not for the faint of heart. I would hate to have to carry this thing around much (>1500 pages!!). The price is nothing to sneeze at either, at least for an impoverished graduate student like me, but Dr. Barrett told us that if you calculate the cost per equation, it may be one of the cheapest books on the market. Well, you get what you pay for. As far as anyone in the class found out, there are no typos, either. (Really. We were looking for them). This is certainly a relief for anyone who has much experience shelling out hundreds of dollars for expensive science textbooks.

I do not consider this book to be introductory material, but it is quite likely as close to exhaustive as anything you are apt to encounter in the physical sciences. If you are very serious about imaging or physical optics, this book will be an invaluable resource.

Tremendous Work and Very Clear

This is one of the few books that I will always treasure. Why? Because it is very clear. It has very very good discussions on everything it treats, and it treats a ton of material. In my engineering career, I have read or tried to read many many textbooks and this stands up as one of the absolute best. Barrett and Meyers give exquisite expositions on all of the mathematics necessary to study image science and many other related fields. For example, its treatment on probability, random processes, decision and estimation theory is actually better, more clear and more complete than many standard textbooks on the subject. If I get stuck reading any of them, I refer to this book and am saved.

I only wish they would issue it in two or three volumes. It is so ponderous (yet beautifully put together) if you carry it around you will get big muscles and get a good cardio workout!

I own it and leave it at home and I had the library at work get me a copy which I leave at work. If I want exercise I will go to my health club!

IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY OF THE 146 BUCKS IT COSTS.

If you want a great textbook to learn this technology from dont hesitate to buy it. You may need two - one for home and one for work, if your company wont buy you one.

Correction to the quotation from JEI

The corrections pertains to the word, oft-quoted, which has, for some reason, appeared as "opt-quoted" on this site in addition to the reference, "Journal of Electronic Imaging" instead of "Journal of Electrical Imaging"

This book, of course, is outstanding as I have stated in my review in the JEI.

I enjoyed this book so much

I enjoyed this book so much. It includes beautiful pictures and short interviews with the cast. I learned so much about the decorations and costumes. Now I pay more attention to the screen. I can easily recommend it to fans of the show.

The history of shopping in gorgeous photos!

Similar to the Downton Abbey companion books, this one has great photos which draw you into Harry Selfridge's London store from it's opening day in 1909. The companion book to the PBS series, it has an intro written by series creator and my hero Andrew Davies (writer of 1995 Pride and Prejudice) and lots of insider info about how the show was conceived. I am not the greatest fan of Jeremy Piven (although I adore Frances O'Connor who plays his wife Rose) however the show is well done and the origin of the modern department store is fascinating. The show is based on another book, Shopping, Seduction & Mr. Selfridge which is also well worth reading. This one is a nice size as I found my Downton Abbey companion books a little unwieldy and heavy to hold for any length of time, but it is still large enough to do the sumptuous photos justice. Enjoy!

High School Textbook

This textbook was so simple that I gave it up after the first few minutes. The authors highlight the most trivial concepts in their extremely wide margins. They write nothing of substance. I tossed it in the recycle bin as soon as my class was over. What a waste of paper!
