'This is an unusual book in that it is written by a man where most autobiographical books about autism are written by women. It is both very readable and well-written, with a detached an honest account of his childhood, family life and life prior to diagnosis. He gets on well with his family, and they are happy that he has written this book, and happy with the book, despite some implied criticism of how they brought him up. Indeed, it comes across as less aggressive than some accounts, so it is particularly insightful for parents and other empathotypicals who might find more black-and-white descriptions of their mistakes hurtful.

As with every book written by someone on the spectrum that I have seen, it is a short book, giving a snapshot of his difficulties and joys before and also after his diagnosis, giving highlights of specific problems and pleasures. Overall I think it would be a good book for someone who recognises himself in the author, or as a starting point for deepening your understanding of your brother, son or friend, or, if you are already interested in this condition, to broaden your understanding of the ways that it present itself' - Asperger United

For a musician who has spent the better half of his life either intoxicated or on a drug high, Kiedis, the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has produced a surprisingly detailed account of his life. Raised in the 1960s and '70s by a drug dealer father who first introduced his preteen son to drugs by mashing them into bananas, the high school delinquent and UCLA dropout seemed destined for a life of rabble-rousing until his high school band—cofounded by close friends Michael "Flea" Balzary and Hillel Slovak—took off and became one of the most popular groups of the 1990s. Though he peppers his book with little known facts (for instance, the author narrowly missed being named Clark Gable Kiedis), the punk-funk rocker dedicates too few pages to his introspective music-writing process and too many to his incessant drug use and revolving door of girlfriends (which included actress Ione Skye, singer Sinéad O'Connor and director Sofia Coppola). But while Kiedis fails to scratch beneath the surface of his fast-lane life, his frankness is moving, especially toward the end of the book, when his mea culpa turns into a full-blown account of recovery and redemption. (Kiedis has been sober for almost four years.) Though not generally as articulate as Marilyn Manson's similar autobiography, Kiedis's story of childhood drug use, adolescent fame and hard-won maturity will strike a chord with fans of Drew Barrymore's Little Girl Lost.

About the Author
Anthony Kiedis grew up in L.A. and formed The Red Hot Chili Peppers in high school. The group's breakthrough album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, was recorded in 1991; their 1999 album Californication sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Their latest album, By the Way, is one of their best sellers yet. The band toured extensively in 2003. Kiedis lives in the Los Angeles area.

A lifelong drug trip.

The first quarter of this book is a hair-raising adventure. Kiedis is a kid who is born and raised to party; his father is a drug dealing hippie who lives with a stable full of groupies and that sums up the kid’s life. He and his father both get into acting, then lose their gigs because they’re both undisciplined. He grows up manic, fearless, stupid, adventurous, and eccentric at the same time. It’s both frightening and hilarious to read about.

Being an outsider is a common theme in this book. He goes from hippie kid in Michigan, transplanted to Los Angeles, to poor kid in a rich-kid school, to a long-haired Californian in a school full of Michigan farmboys. Fortunately for him, his father is good friends with Sonny Bono, so he makes good use of their guest room, refrigerator, and their address so he can go to a good high school. Eventually he wears out his welcome with Sonny, thanks to his rude-kid attitude, but I’ll not spoil the plot on what happens at the fur vest mansion. Then comes the school full of weirdo misfits, some of whom would eventually join Kiedis’ band.

Scar Tissue reminds me of Jeanette Walls’ The Glass Castle where the crazy parents keep the family on the move through America’s poor towns. The only difference is that the poor town in Scar Tissue also has a thriving art and music scene, and he’s in no hurry to leave or see the world. As for his constant drug use, he has his father’s stash to keep him high 24 hours a day, so it’s not like he has to deal it to support his habit. Nor does he have to go into dangerous neighborhoods to buy the drugs, so there’s no danger to scare him straight. After high school he cheats his way into UCLA, snorts cocaine, steals his textbooks, steals his meals from the cafeteria, snorts some more cocaine, so it’s no surprise that he likes living in Los Angeles. Who wouldn’t? He’s a loser, don’t get me wrong, but what he has going for him is the constant freedom to keep losing.

The tone of the story shifts, however, once he leaves UCLA. We get into the L.A. rock scene, and his life no longer consists of vegetating at his father’s house and getting high, interspersed with being a troublemaker at school. He now spends his time hanging out at the numerous run-down rock venues, interspersed with getting high and shoplifting for food. His father, scared straight by an LAPD raid, gets out of drug dealing and becomes a starving actor again. At the time of this story (circa 1983) the city was still on the downscale side and the cheap rents meant that anyone could open a music venue if you got the permits. The rock fans had less money to spend, so if you couple all that together, you can see how there were plenty of clubs to perform at. You didn’t have all the upscale restaurants driving rents up.

Each part of the book can really stand on its own; the dysfunctional family, the crazy childhood, the starving actor, the starving rock musician. Unlike most rock star autobiographies, this one has been print since it came out, so there’s got to be a reason people love this book. I suspect it’s just as much about the wildness of Los Angeles as it is about music. Like that famous line from the song Californication, the city is “the end of the world and all of Western civilization,” or as Kenneth Anger put it, “a dusty tin lizzy trail on the edge of Manifest Destiny.”

If you travel from the place where the USA began, Los Angeles is the last stop on the route.

Scar Tissue is not a book about the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It is a book about heroin addiction. Kiedis has survived an incredible life with enough stories to fill several books: growing up with a father who dealt drugs to the Hollywood elite and losing his virginity to his dad’s girlfriend certainly set his moral compass on a runaway track. While the book chronicles his founding and building the Chili Peppers, that story line is secondary to his personal problems, though there are great anecdotes about the inspiration for songs and stories from the studio. Ultimately, it is Kiedis’ drug use, mostly shooting cocaine and heroin, that grows to dominate his life. Despite watching his best friends die from it, watching it erode his career, end his relationships, and daily threaten his life, he could not stop. Clean for years, then relapse. There are points of the story where my stomach sank. Kiedis doesn’t ask for sympathy, but manages to get it anyway. Like the good biographies, there is emotional honesty here, more than I was expecting, and more than his nonsense lyrics would lead you to believe he is capable of. Scar Tissue is fun and entertaining, but it’s humbling too. This has quickly become my favorite music biography, better than Phil Lesh’s (godawful), Clive Davis’s (good read, but formulaic and superficial), and Marilyn Manson’s (overrated).

what a beautiful soul and my second was - I think this ...

One warm evening in maybe '96 or '97 I was walking into a casual restaurant in LA and walking out was this man with longish brown hair and heavenly brown eyes. He smiled warmly and lit up all of Larchmont and said hello - my first thought was, what a beautiful soul and my second was - I think this is Anthony Keidis. I looked back and saw him walk into a silver car and knew that it was. I always thought I'd see him again. Cut to Feb 2017 - in New York now and long story short (I think it's too late) never saw him again and saw the RHCP's were on tour, wanted to see them and be somewhat close to the stage. at Madison Square Garden you weren't getting close for under 1K - so went to see them in Philly. GREAT SHOW and AK looks better than ever. So, ordered this book and 100 pages in, I realize that he and Flea lived in the same building I lived in in Hollywood - I was there about 10 years later, but what a coincidence. They rehearsed their first song there! As for the book, I couldn't put it down. I feel that my first instinct was correct, a beautiful soul with a lot of talent. So glad he is here.

Eat the meat and spit out the bones...

Let me first say that my opinion of this book has changed dramatically as my career in MLM has progressed.

When the book was first released and I read it cover to cover, I thought it was going to be a panacea for me. It was clearly written, described lots of situations that I'd already encountered and just plain made sense.

As I've progressed to a six-figure home-based income, it became increasingly clear that the main problem with this book is that much of it still boils down to the same basic advice that most MLM gurus have you doing: making lists of friends and family, doing milk-and-cookie parties in your home, doing three-way calls.

And, if you've been in MLM for more than 20 minutes, you probably know that most of those things probably don't create the results you're looking for.

Heck, it's not that hard to figure out: go find any top-earner in the business and you'll probably not see his friends and family anywhere in his business. And yet they always tell you to enroll your friends and family.

I gave the book THREE stars because I DO believe that it forwards alot of the same impractical thinking that is presented in most other MLM "how to" books.

Where this book DOES shine is in teaching you the proper mindset and posture of a professional networker which is as important as any of the nuts-and-bolts.

So, if you haven't got this book, I do suggest you get a copy. But, you can probably ignore the areas about warm marketing, cold-contacting strangers and doing drawing circles on whiteboards in your living room for prospects....it's not going to be the solution you think it is.

Helped me more than anything!

I have been in network marketing for over ten years, failing miserably. I tried this company and that company. Wasn't going anywhere untill I bought this book and used it.

This book should be called "How To Become Brilliant on the basics" and subtitled "How To Unleash Your Potential in MLM." It sure did for me.

Before reading "Your First Year in Network Marketing", I thought I would be lucky to get 100 people on my list. After reading what Mark said, I easily came up with a list of over 2,000 and the bst part is that those 2,000 know 2,000 who know 2,000 who know 2,000 and so on. I think it is true that if you know three people, you know everybodyelse in the world.

The affirmations were great and got me thinking bigger. The scripts were a great start, although I have midified them since then.

Overall a great book by Mark. I wonder how many other failed network marketers would do well if only they read (and applied) this wisdom?

This is the second book by Diana and Michael Richardson I've read. They are excellent and knowledgeable writers and their books are laid out in sensible order. I recommend this book to any man (or woman interested in the study of Tantric sex.

About the Author
A recognized leader in the field of marketing research, Gilbert A. Churchill, Jr., joined the University of Wisconsin faculty after receiving his D.B.A. from Indiana University in 1966. Professor Churchill was named Distinguished Marketing Educator by the American Marketing Association in 1986, the second individual so honored. This lifetime achievement award recognizes and honors a living marketing educator for distinguished service and outstanding contributions in the field of marketing education. Professor Churchill was also awarded the Academy of Marketing Science's lifetime achievement award in 1993 for his significant scholarly contributions. In 1996, he received a Paul D. Converse Award, which is given to the most influential marketing scholars, as judged by a national jury drawn from universities, businesses, and government. Also in 1996, the Marketing Research Group of the American Marketing Association established the Gilbert A. Churchill, Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award, which is awarded each year to an individual who has made significant contributions to marketing research. Dr. Churchill is a past recipient of the yearly William O'Dell Award for an outstanding article in the JOURNAL OF MARKETING RESEARCH. He has also been a finalist for the award five additional times. He is a co-author of the most and third-most influential articles of the past century in sales management, as judged by a panel of experts in the field. His articles have appeared in such publications as the JOURNAL OF MARKETING RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF MARKETING, JOURNAL OF CONSUMER RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF RETAILING, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH, DECISION SCIENCES, TECHNOMETRICS, and ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR AND HUMAN PERFORMANCE.

Tom J. Brown, received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994. Prior to joining the marketing faculty at Oklahoma State University, he served on the faculty at Southern Methodist University. Professor Brown teaches marketing research and has supervised dozens of student research projects for industry clients ranging from not-for-profit service organizations to Fortune 500 companies. Professor Brown is a past recipient of the Sheth Foundation Best Paper Award in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science. In addition, he received a Richard D. Irwin Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship while at the University of Wisconsin, the Kenneth D. and Leitner Greiner Teaching Award and the Regents Distinguished Research Award, both at Oklahoma State University. Professor Brown's articles have appeared in such publications as the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Consumer Research, the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, the Journal of Retailing, the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, and the Journal of Service Research, among others. His research interests include services marketing and corporate branding and reputation. He has served on the editorial review boards of the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science and Corporate Reputation Review and is cofounder of the Corporate Associations/Identity Research Group. He is currently a member of the Academic Council of the American Marketing Association.

Tracy A. Suter received his Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas in 1997. Prior to joining the marketing faculty at Oklahoma State University, he served as a full-time faculty member at the University of Southern Mississippi. Professor Suter teaches a wide range of courses with emphasis on marketing research. Professor Suter?s research interests include public policy, the use of new technologies in marketing, and integrated marketing communications. He has published in journals such as the Journal of Business Research, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, and Journal of Retailing. He also serves on two editorial review boards of academic journals and is a frequent reviewer for other journals and conferences. Professor Suter has received numerous awards for both research and teaching activities including the University of Arkansas Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Sherwin-Williams Distinguished Teaching Competition Award given by the Society for Marketing Advances, and the President?s Outstanding Faculty Award at Oklahoma State University. Tracy is frequently asked to speak to doctoral students about teaching excellence and transitioning to becoming university faculty members.

Good book for beginners

This is a good book for beginners in marketing research and want to know how to conduct market research. This is a book for the undergraduate marketing program. Our instructor used it for the MBA program as it explains some of the concepts really well.

If you have done surveys, collected survey data, developed survey questionnaires, used statistical tools to analyze data and interpret results , this book is a waste for you. I hardly read this book for my program.

I was really impressed by how well this book's content corresponds to its title. If you are just beginning your foray into the world of marketing research, it has really useful guidelines and tips for how to sucessfully execute your research study.

Churchill gives relatively simple examples that can be easily understood by someone new to the field, and he doesn't include anything too advanced to be intimidating. What he does include are the basics you need to know for different types of marketing research and some seasoned advice on how to avoid common pitfalls.

so this was a big deal to me (and also something towatch out for)

This guide is a must have for anyone prepping for the CLEP Algebra Exam. First of all, this guide is a 2017 edition, so I know that it has the most up to date content. Many of the other guides that I saw were from last year and beyond, so this was a big deal to me (and also something to watch out for). Actually, this guide is pretty thin--definitely much less intimidating than the huge, heavy guides that some of my friends were carrying around! This guide is well written and easy to understand. This guide is broken up into sections, so you can go right to the area that you want to focus on without having to do a ton of searching or reading the guide from cover to cover to get the most out of it, which saved me a lot of time! I also thought that the practice questions were very similar to those on the real test, so I felt more confident about my score. I would recommend this guide to others who are looking for a general idea of what to expect and a good guide for a great price.
