A Disappointing Companion to Just Me and My Dad

My little brother (now in his 30s) grew up to Mercer Mayer's Just Me and My Dad and Just For You. I bought those last year for our then-one-year-olds and was delighted that they were just as wonderful as I remembered. I ordered Just Me and My Mom recently and I'm so disappointed with the content. Unlike Just Me and My Dad, which has a sweet and happy story line, this book is just about Little Critter doing things he's not supposed to and people getting mad.

And, call me a feminist if you will, but I felt slighted by this book's treatment of the mom. Just Me and My Dad is all about an awesome camping trip little critter goes on with his dad, while Just Me and My Mom is all about this poor kid getting dragged to a bunch of boring museums where he's not allowed to touch things (and one with a bunch of lame pictures), and then a dress store with his mom. In fact, my husband was reading it to the kids the other night and I heard him flipping back through the pages, muttering to himself, "When was this WRITTEN?"

Shockingly, 1990. Feels more like the 1950s. And not that sexy John Hamm sort of way.

Fun read for kids and adults alike!

I loved the Little Critter books when I was growing up, and this is the first book I bought to read to my infant daughter. I get wonderfully nostalgic reading it to her and talking about how my mom used to read these books to me. Colorful pictures make it fun for even babies to look at. There's a lot of fun in them for adults as well, the looks on the mom's face is priceless! I didn't catch her exhaustion and frustration when I was a kid.

About the Author
Gert Holstege has published many of his most relevant papers in Progress in Brain Research. The first Progress in Brain Research paper appeared in 1982 in which he, together with Hans Kuypers showed the organization of the descending pathways from the brainstem to the spinal cord (Holstege and Kuypers, 1982),. In this paper he was the first to demonstrate which pathways controlled respiration by accessing motoneurons innervating the diaphragm, intercostal and abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor. In 1989 he published a paper explaining that the periaqueductal gray (PAG) produced vocalization by means of its projection to the nucleus retroambiguus, which, in turn, projects to respiration related motoneurons (Holstege, 1989). This system also produces sound production in humans. In a Progress in Brain Research paper of 1991 Holstege, for the first time, showed that respiration is similarly organized as other specific control systems as blood pressure, heart frequency, micturition and mating control systems (Holstege, 1991). In a Progress in Brain Research Volume chapter in 1996, Holstege, together with Bandler and Saper brought all these motor systems together with their midbrain and higher level control systems in the concept of the Emotional Motor System (Holstege et al., 1996).
Studies using PET-scanning demonstrated that the micturition control system in humans was almost identical to that in cats (Blok et al., 1997). It explained also the reason why so many elderly suffer from overactive bladder and urge-incontinence. This problem, one of the most costly in healthcare in general, is caused by the many small infarctions in the white matter of the prefrontal cortex interrupting the connections between the medial orbitofrontal cortex and the PAG as the central micturition control system.
Since in the cat also the hardware of sexual behavior has been detected, Holstege and co-workers also investigated the brain function during sexual activities in humans, which revealed that the same centers in the pontine reticular formation controlled ejaculation and female orgasm, again similar to the cat control systems (Huynh et al., 2013).
In simple terms the brainstem runs all the basic motor systems via specific projections to the motoneurons in the spinal cord that execute the motor act, not only respiration, but also heart rate, blood pressure, micturition, defecation, and sexual activities. In all likelihood, parturition in women will also be under control of these systems (Holstege, 2014).

Dr. Subramanian holds a PhD in systems neuroscience and holds a Senior Research Fellowship at the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR), Asia-Pacific Centre for Neuromodulation (APCN); he is also an affiliate at the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), a teaching intern at the School of Biomedical Sciences, and an honorary senior research associate at the University of Sydney. His research focuses on the systems neurophysiology of autonomic control and treatment of neurogenic autonomic disorders via neuromodulation of brainstem circuits and his discoveries have been critical for establishing the periaqueductal gray as the “emotional controller” of the autonomic nervous system. He is editor of two volumes of the series Progress in Brain Research and the author of more than fifty articles and papers.

Christopher Pike is awesome

I love his young adult books, they are well thought out and thought provoking. He tells a simple conchise story and ties up all of the loose ends perfectly. His female characters also kick ass,(yes he can actually convincingly write women). He doesn't get as mired in the plot as he does with his adult books, when is actually a terrible shame. Most of his stories are completely original, mini masterpieces that hide behind the young adult genre. I really think he deserves to be a lot more famous than he is.
This book is very well written. It includes all the good ingredients of a classic horror novel, freaky metamorphosis included. Sometimes, it borders on downright horrifying. The main characters, as they struggle with the basic aspects of humanity and their new hunger are realistically done. This book does hint at evil, but it also offers a motive.
This book is also sassy and proud and doesn't take itself overly seriously. At times, it is amusing in a sickening sort of way. One of the characters buys four pounds of meat at the supermarket and eats half of it raw in the car.
A couple other darkly amusing quotes are "He caught me trying to eat my dog, so what?" "Come on, you have to eat people, all the cool people are doing it".
It all starts when Angela's best friend, Mary bursts into a party and shoots the head cheerleader and one of the football players. Christopher Pike announces this happens in the course of about 6 seconds, so nobody has a chance to react. When she turns to shoot her boyfriend, Angela and a couple other people try to stop her and everyone else just runs out of the house.
Justice is finally extracted, at a price. The innocent get trampled and demolished. This book is not fair, and carries some of the most brutal killing scenes I have ever seen in any of his books. The pre-apocalyptic one was especially horrible, but this makes it stand out on it's own even more. It's a good story, it keeps you reading. I found the ending incredible, in a sad and beautiful kind of way.

My favorite Christopher Pike book -- so far...

I read this book because it reminded me of John Saul's "Creature," which I sort of enjoyed. And it turned out to be even better.
What is the secret of the football players? Why are they suddenly so strong? And why have they become so cruel?
The secret isn't what you think. This is Christopher Pike, after all! In the hands of the wrong author, this book could've been *so* stupid. But in the hands of Christopher Pike, this works. Some reviewers have compared this book to early Dean Koontz, and I have to say I agree with them.

You never forget your first...

OMG!! This was the VERY FIRST Christopher Pike book I owned when I was a just a pre-teen! I must've read it over and over again so many times, that I lost count because the whole story and plot just fascinated me... and of course scared the BEEJEEZUS outta me, too! That cover art--WHOAH. I just could not stop staring at it for some reason. Maybe I was just weirdly drawn to the "HAWT Monster" shown on there or something, lol. But Seriously. YIKES!!

This particular book and "Remember Me" will always be my favorite Christopher Pike books after so many, many years. His books may be labeled "Young Adult"... but I remember quite vividly as I was reading this, of the 'mature nature' I felt I had stumbled upon. I felt and knew I was reading some serious 'adult' stuff. It made me feel like I was finally becoming a grown-up or something, LOL! It also made me feel like I had gotten my hands on something 'forbidden'... something that I just wasn't quite 'ready' for yet.

So if you think you're too old to be reading a book like this or any other one of Mr. Pike's scary-fun books--think again!! I had FINALLY just bought "Remember Me" again after it was lost somehow through all the moving I did during my child hood. Unfortunately, this book was another treasure that got lost along the way. :'( I may have not clicked on that little button up there that says "add to cart" yet... but I have a good feeling that I will be doing that very, very soon. ;)

About the Author
Stefan Hildebrandt is known for his work on the calculus of variations and minimal surfaces. He has held faculty positions both in the U. S. and in Europe, and he is currently Professor of Mathematics at the University of Bonn.

Anthony Tromba is Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and is widely recognized for his work on minimal surfaces and nonlinear functional analysis.

A great reference and resource guide for artists

If any artists are exploring reference material on shape, form and
design in nature, this book explains why nature does 'create' it's
unique self.

It does tend to explain and breakdown natural shapes into mathematical
equations and theorims. Still the photos they provide and
the line drawings help you to understand why things are the
way they are. Useful if you want to create hybrids of these
forms. A intelligent imagination is useful.

My applications for this are from a 3D fine arts point of
view. The info in the book has provided me with inspiration
in my 3D artwork.

for artists, mathematicians and those who love to play with soap bubbles

Soap bubbles, hanging cables, tent-like structures in modern architecture, animal forms and more. All these share a common principle which involves minimizing something-usually an energy principle. This book explores the mathematics behind these.

Soap bubbles are spherical, of course. But ask yourself why. And consider what other shapes are possible if the bubbles are restricted in some way -for example, if one side touches a plane. In the book, we see beautiful photograpphs of soap bubbles along with discussion of mathematical attempts (some still unsuccessful) to describe these shapes.

As the first reviewer mentioned, artists can benefit from the ideas and structures in the book. Mathematically minded persons will also find the book very interesting. I have some minor criticisms: The intro chapters on history were too long and covered basic ideas that are well known to almost anyone reading this book. Also, a key principle involves the calculus of variations. More could be done to make clear what this means. Yet, overall, the authors are successful in going from experiments with soap bubbles to mathematical theory to aesthetic values and back and forth.

The chapter near the end on optimal design is excellent. I highly recommend this book.

There are so many grammatical errors in this book that I was too focused on the author’s misuse/abuse of the English language to pay attention to the actual content. Here are a few examples:

Location 140: …is easily being through out the window.
Location 174: …the process is becoming even more simpler, and will continue to do so.
Location 198: …the innovations of technology is putting a stop on traditional methods…
Location 199: Companies such as Lending Club and Prosper specializes in peer to peer…
Location 234:… the options has never been as open…
Location 242:… is a difficulty tons of people have had issues with. [seriously, "tons" of people???]
Location 243:… Platforms such as TransferWise has radically changed…

This is by no means an exhaustive list and note that many of the examples above are on the same page. Similar errors occur on nearly every page of the book. I suppose in today’s day and age, it is possible to publish and sell a book with no editorial review. Mr. William may very well be profiting from the sale of this book, but he’d be well advised to spend some money to have his next work reviewed prior to distribution (he should at least ask an educated friend to review it first).

Very useful guide for beginners in FinTech

Financial technology is something I don't know anything about, but I know enough to see that it is something worth learning about.
This book is perfect for someone like me. It explains everything about it, the history, uses, dangers and what will it be like in the future. It is well-written for a beginner like me, understandable and patiently paced. I feel like I got a lot from it and I can only recommend it to anyone even slightly interested in the subject. Good book.

Very elementary, partially wrong, and terribly written

I am an attorney who works in banking regulation and who routinely works with fintech issues. This book is horrible. The author clearly does not understand how banking works or how the fintech industry operates. All of the information in the book is extremely basic, and some of it is wrong. The writing is also curiously bad, I would put it at a
middle school level. The grammar errors make me question if there was an editor.
This book will just confuse you about the real challenges and potential facing the fintech industry. Avoid it.
